Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

The great capricorn beetle or Cerambyx longicorn (Cerambyx cerdo, Linnaeus, 1758) is an internationally protected umbrella species representing the highly diverse and endangered fauna associated with senescent oaks. For the conservation and monitoring of populations of C. cerdo it is important to have a good knowledge of its microhabitat requirements. We investigated determinants and patterns of C. cerdo distribution within individual old, open-grown oaks. Trees inhabited by this species were climbed, and the number of exit holes and environmental variables recorded at two sites in the Czech Republic. Distribution of exit holes in relation to height above the ground, trunk shading by branches, orientation in terms of the four cardinal directions, diameter, surface and volume of inhabited tree parts were investigated. -

Web version 1.1 April, 2017 Forward to Web Version 1.1 - May, 2017: The current work is a continuation of a chapter from my MS thesis at Oregon State University, completed in Sept. of 2014. Much of this version is copied directly from that document with several additions and corrections to the text, and a number of new photographs. The intitial goal of my thesis was to create a field guide to the PNW lepturines that was useful both to amateur enthusiasts and to scientists in need of a more detailed technical resource. Unfortunately, the work was forshortened due to time constraints for finishing at OSU, and my ultimate pursuit remains a work in progress. After a brief hiatus from active research, I’ve taken back up the effort. The key to genera is largely based on Linsley & Chemsak’s two-part monograph published in 1972 and 1976. It is currently undergoing testing with the intention to incorporate simpler language, a glossary, and photographic aids. I would greatly appreciate any comments, ideas, corrections, or additions. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. -

This study aims to assess the abundance and diversity of Cerambycid beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in different types of habitats (urbanized, natural oak forest, herbaceous and mixed forest) of the Zselic region in Hungary. Beetles were collected by sweep netting and hand collecting. Species richness and diversity were analyzed for the different habitats. Temporal data also contributed to a better knowledge of the flight period and ecology of the captured species and specimens. A total of 69 species were identified during the sampling period (2009–2013). The period of adult flight activity was from the second week of May until the second week of June. Plagionotus arcuatus L., Dorcadion aethiops Scopoli and Strangalia melanura Fabricius were the most abundant species. The most diverse habitat type was mixed forest (Simpson Index= 0.9443; Shannon Index= 1.4373), and the least diverse one was the urbanized environment (Simpson Index= 0.4141; Shannon Index= 0.5111). The differences in diversity might be explained by the heterogeneity of potential host plants available in the different habitats. Correspondence and cluster analyses revealed that different habitats were associated with distinct beetle assemblages. -

CERAMBYX WELENSII Vulgar names: - Synonyms: Cerambyx velutinus Brullé. Distribution: Scientific name: Cerambyx welensii (Küster). The Cerambyx genus is found throughout Southern Europe, and on the : Iberian Peninsula is located mainly in the Family regions of Extremadura and Andalusia. Cerambycidae. Cerambyx welensii is a large xylophagous beetle whose larvae feed on the wood of dead, weak or badly damaged parts of different hardwood species. It has a special predilection for the Quercus genus and more specifically for holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and cork oaks (Quercus suber), causing serious damage to the dehesa woodland.
