Yes, Garrity did win the West Division 2 individual championship. No, Garrity did not follow that up with a state champion- ship title. Garrity displayed true leadership at states. Despite dealing with severe flu-like symptoms, the Rams sophomore golfer struggled but completed 18 holes. He did not voice concern about the out- come of his individual performance, but rather focused on his teammates, express- ing his support for them. Kudos to Garrity for a truly inspiring effort. The young, talented golfer has a bright future ahead of him. The Westfield Technical Academy Tigers should also be applauded for their combined efforts during the stretch run of the golf season. Westfield Tech reeled off four straight wins in as many days to qualify for their first-ever tournament appearance, a historic achievement. I know Halloween is already behind us, but several times this season, Westfield Babe Ruth President Dan Welch (right) present the 2019 Scott McClenna Award to Ryan LaPoint (center) and also joined by Brennan High School sophomore quarterback Matt Jarvis (left) the 2018 Scott McClenna Award winner. Another thing to watch this postseason Dan Welch City Cup champs The Scott McClenna award out each season for more than 40 – the return of Westfield High’s winningest gymnastics coach Joanne Hewins at Western Mass. Hewins, who boasted one of the longest winning streaks in the sport in the state, returned this season after a brief absence. Will that translate into another title? Also, will the Westfield High School girls volleyball and girls soccer teams, and Westfield Technical Academy boys soccer, take it one step further this season and bring home championship banners? If the regular season is any indication, the odds are favorable that any one of the three returns to the Whip City with the hard- ware. It’s funny that the Washington Nationals finally won a World Series title after fall- ing out of favor with Vegas following several years of disappointment … and Bryce Harper was not in town to enjoy the fruits of his team’s labors. New England’s defense has been scary good like the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seattle Seahawks of the last decade. Are they even better than the one they faced in Super Bowl XX? Their next five opponents will go a long way in deter- mining that answer. The Patriots face Baltimore, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston and Kansas City in the coming weeks, as well as the Buffalo Bills again late in the season. Games against winless Miami and Cincinnati in the final weeks of the season will likely help pad those stats a bit more. Red Sox fans can rest easy now as the Celtics and Bruins are here to distract us well into the spring. Aaaaaaaaah.
