It was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1820 as Indiana Seminary and was located in Bloomington. 20questions Interview by Elisabeth Andrews Photography by Nino Cocchiarella for IU’s President McRobbie on McRobbie Many people are familiar with Michael McRobbie’s ambitions as Indiana Uni- versity’s 18th president—his support for information technology, the life sciences, international programs, and shoring up the university’s physical infrastructure are among his well-publicized priorities. And, of course, his management of the Kelvin Sampson fi asco has also been big news. But not many of There are a number of paradoxes in us know much about Michael McRobbie’s life. Overview The University Graduate School administers degree programs on eight campuses of Indiana University: Bloomington, East, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Northwest at Gary, South Bend, and Southeast at New Albany. As of fall, 2014, the University Graduate School offers a total of 43 certificate programs, 156 Master’s degrees, and 133 Ph.D. degree programs state-wide. At Bloomington there are seventeen graduate certificate programs, ninety-eight Master’s programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Fine Arts, School of Journalism, School of Music, School of Optometry and Kelley School of Business. The University Graduate School offers ninety-six Ph.D. programs and/or Ph.D. minors in the College of Arts and Sciences, Kelley School of Business, School of Education, School of Informatics and Computing, School of Journalism, the Maurer School of Law, School of Optometry, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and the School of Public Health. At Indianapolis, the programs administered by the Indiana University Graduate School include seventeen certificates in the School of Dentistry, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Medicine, the School of Public and Environ- mental Affairs, the School of Philanthropy, and the School of Public Health. -

March, 2008 Dear Colleagues, A sense of the fundamental importance of the global community characterizes the very best international research universities. At Indiana University, we have contributed to the development of the global community for many decades. Our legendary eleventh president and first chancellor Herman B Wells had a deep appreciation of its importance when he initiated the University’s concerted efforts to become an international force in higher education. He attracted world-class international faculty, developed new international alliances with governments and institutions, established area studies programs, and dramatically expanded IU’s foreign languages curricula. Drawing on our long and rich tradition of international engagement, we must remember that education and research—IU’s two fundamental missions—are the seeds for success in a world growing increasingly flat and seamless. Global literacy and collaboration have never been more important than they are now. Today, Indiana University is among national leaders in the number of foreign languages offered and in the number of Title VI National Resource Centers located on our campuses. Our world-renowned faculty, scholars, and scientists teach, research, and collaborate with colleagues around the globe. Our over five thousand international students add immeasurably to the life of the entire university. As we look toward the future, the best programs in most professions and disciplines will increas- ingly require a period of study abroad for student success. Indeed, whether our graduates are in Bloomington or Beijing, they will be living and working in a global environment.
