According to research conducted by Optaros, Inc., and InformationWeek magazine, 87 percent of the 512 companies surveyed use open source software, with companies earning over $1 billion in annual revenue saving an average of $3.3 million by using open source software in 2004.1 Open source is not just staying in computer rooms either-it is increasingly grabbing intellectual property headlines and entering mainstream news on issues like the following: i. Press release Leuven, Belgium, 8 November 2011 New and Revised Extensions for Accessible Document Creation with OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) today released an extension for OpenOffice.org Writer and LibreOffice Writer that enables users to evaluate and repair accessibility issues in word processing documents. “AccessODF” (http://sourceforge.net/p/accessodf/wiki/) is a freeware extension for OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice, two office suites that are freely available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux/Unix and Solaris. At the same time, K.U.Leuven also releases new versions of two other extensions: odt2daisy (http://odt2daisy.sourceforge.net/) and odt2braille (http://odt2braille.sourceforge.net/). The former enables users to export word processing documents to digital talking books in the DAISY format; the latter enables exporting to Braille and printing on a Braille embosser. AccessODF, odt2daisy and odt2braille are being developed in the framework of the AEGIS project, an R&D project funded by the European Commission. The three extensions will be demonstrated at the AEGIS project’s Workshop and Conference, which take place in Brussels on 28-30 November 2011 (http://aegis-conference.eu/). AccessODF AccessODF is an extension that can be used in OpenOffice.org Writer and in LibreOffice Writer. JOURNAL OF LATEX CLASS FILES, VOL. 14, NO. 8, AUGUST 2015 1 DZip: improved neural network based general-purpose lossless compression Mohit Goyal, Kedar Tatwawadi, Shubham Chandak, Idoia Ochoa Abstract—We consider lossless compression based on statistical [4], [5] and generative modeling [6]). The proposed compressor outperforms general-purpose compressors however, have been tailored for compression of certain data such as Gzip (29% size reduction on average) and 7zip (12% size types (e.g., text [12] [13] or images [14], [15]), where the reduction on average) on a variety of real datasets, achieves near- prediction model is trained in a supervised framework on optimal compression on synthetic datasets, and performs close to separate training data or the model architecture is tuned for specialized compressors for large sequence lengths, without any the specific data type. -

Are Projects Hosted on Sourceforge.net Representative of the Population of Free/Open Source Software Projects? Bob English February 5, 2008 Introduction We are researchers studying Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) projects . Because some of our work uses data gathered from Sourceforge.net (SF), a web site that hosts FOSS projects, we consider it important to understand how representative SF is of the entire population of FOSS projects. While SF is probably hosts the greatest number of FOSS projects, there are many other similar hosting sites. In addition, many FOSS projects maintain their own web sites and other project infrastructure on their own servers. Based on performing an Internet search and literature review (see Appendix for search procedures), it appears that no one knows how many Free/Open Source Software Projects exist in the world or how many people are working on them. Because the population of FOSS projects and developers is unknown, it is not surprising that we were not able to find any empirical analysis to assess how representative SF is of this unknown population. Although an extensive empirical analysis has not been performed, many researchers have considered the question or related questions. The next section of this paper reviews some of the FOSS literature that discusses the representativeness of SF. The third section of the paper describes some ideas for empirically exploring the representativeness of SF. The paper closes with some arguments for believing SF is the best choice for those interested in studying the population of FOSS projects. Literature Review In one of the earliest references to the representativeness of SF, Madley, Freeh and Tynan (2002) mention that they assumed that SF was representative because of its popularity and because of the number of projects hosted there, although they note that this assumption “needs to be confirmed” (p. -

O objetivo desse comunicado é explorar algumas possibilidades destinadas a permitir a divisão e o transporte de arquivos de grande volume. Neste comunicado, tutoriais para o Winrar, 7-zip, ALZip, programas destinados a compactação de arquivos, são apresentados. É descrita a utilização do Hjsplit, software livre, que permite a divisão de arquivos. Adicionalmente, são apresentados dois sites, o rapidshare e o mediafire, destinados ao compartilhamento e à hospedagem de arquivos. 1. Introdução O crescimento no volume de informações transportadas por um mesmo indivíduo ou por uma equipe é uma tendência mundial. No início da década de 90, mesmo nos países desenvolvidos, um computador com capacidade de armazenamento de 12 GB era inovador. As fitas magnéticas foram substituídas a partir do anos 50, quando a IBM lançou o primogenitor dos atuais discos rígidos, o RAMAC Computer, com a capacidade de 5 MB, pesando aproximadamente uma tonelada (ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO, 2006; PCWORLD, 2006) (Figs. 1 e 2).
