PSA Leyte celebrates 30th Civil Registration Month

This is in connection with the annual observance of Civil Registration Month every February wherein civil registration activities are in its full blast.

For this year, the month-long celebration was started by its Launching and Caravan on January 31 to February 1, 2020, hosted by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of , Leyte. One hundred seventy- three (173) City/Municipal Civil Registrars (C/MCRs) and their staff graced said event. to page 2

In preparation for the conduct of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), PSA-Leyte conducted convening and information dissemination activities in the cities/municipalities of the province.

Above activities were conducted as early as November 2019. Leyte’s inflation rate surges to 1.6 percent in March 2020 The Inflation rate of Leyte slightly picked up speed in March 2020 with 1.6 percentage points. This was 0.1 percentage point higher compared with the 1.5 percent inflation rate posted in the previous month. The same was observed in the region’s inflation rate; from 1.9 percent in February 2020 to 2.2 percent in March 2020. In comparison, the inflation rate of Leyte was lower than the region’s rate during the reference month.

Commodity groups that contributed to the 1.6 percent overall inflation rate (IR) are: Education (6.5 percent); Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services (4.8 percent); Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (4.0 percent); Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (3.6 percent); Clothing and Footwear (2.4 percent); Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house (2.1 percent); Communication (1.9 percent); Transport (1.1 percent); Recreation and Culture (0.6 percent); and Health (0.6 percent).

Five major commodity groups recorded decline in inflation rate during the reference month. Transport posted the highest decrease with 3.6 percentage points, from 4.7 percent in February 2020 to 1.1 percent in March 2020. This was followed by Alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 0.5 percentage points, from 4.5 percent in February 2020 to 4.0 percent in March 2020. The 0.1 percentage lowest drop was noted in Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services (from 4.9 percent to 4.8 percent), Clothing and footwear (from 2.5 percent to 2.4 percent), and Recreation and culture (from 0.7 percent to 0.6 percent).

Food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded zero inflation rate. This suggests that the rate of price increases in March 2019 was sustained during the month in review.

On a month-on-month comparison, Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels had the highest increase in inflation rate with of 0.6 percentage point, from 3.0 percent in February 2020 to 3.6 percent in March 2020. Next was Food and non-alcoholic beverages with 0.4 percentage point, from -0.4 percent to 0.0 percent. Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house registered the lowest increment with 0.1 percentage point, from 2.0 percent in the previous month to 2.1 percent in the reference month. Three of the major commodity groups retained its inflation rates in March 2020: Education (6.5 percent); Communication (1.9 percent); and Health (0.6 percent).

Livestock inventory drops slightly by 1.35 percent

As of January 1, 2020, the total inventory of livestock in Leyte was estimated at 278,917 heads. This was 1.35 percent lower than the previous year’s inventory of 282,731 heads (Table 1). Cattle had the highest decrease in stocks with 7.91 percent, followed by carabao and goat with 2.91 percent and 1.89, respectively. On the other hand, only swine was able to record expansion in inventory with a meager 0.61 percent increase.

Of the total livestock inventory of 278,917 heads, 97.9 percent or 273,093 heads were raised in the back- yard farms while only 2.1 percent or 5,824 heads were tended in the commercial farms (Figure 3).

Among the domesticated animals present in livestock farms, swine had the highest number with 47.5 percent (132,500 heads) of the total livestock inventory. Carabao followed with 41.5 percent (115,716 heads). Goat and cattle accounted for only 8.0 percent (22,351 heads) and 3.0 percent (8,350 heads), respectively (Figure 4). Birth Statistics in Leyte

A total of 56,247 live births were registered in the Province of Leyte (including Tacloban City) in 2019, posting a decrease of of 4.2 percent from 58,709 registered live births in 2018.

As shown in Figure 5, the number of registered live births decreased from 2018 to 2019. Howevern, in the past year, the highest number of registered live births was recorded during the first quarter at 15,170. It declined to 14,678 in the second quarter, 13,411 in third quarter, and had its lowest in the fourth quarter with 12,988.

Registered births among males were higher than females

In 2019, there were more registered births among males (28,396 or 50.5 percent) than females (27,851 or 49.5 percent).
