Navigating the Digital Playing Field Case Studies in Social Media and Sports Communication by James Sanderson A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Jeffrey W. Kassing, Chair Artemio Ramirez, Jr. Lindsey J. Mean ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT Sports communication is a vibrant, blossoming research area within the communication discipline. One of the more fruitful directions in sports communication research pertains to social media. Social media has embedded itself in the sports world in a very short period of time. As a result, there is a need for instructional resources that prepare students to understand the nuances and power that social media possess. This research provides the foundation for a case study textbook centered on social media and sports communication. Specifically, four cases dealing with: (a) athletes using social media to encourage input from fans; (b) sports organizations using social media as an agenda-setting tool; (c) negative parasocial interaction expressed to athletes via social media; and (d) athletes using social media to enact image repair are presented. These cases demonstrate that social media is a valuable conduit between athletes and fans that enables athletes and sports organizations to cultivate fan identity and maintain control over public information. The cases also demonstrate that fan behavior via social media can quickly turn problematic, requiring that athletes and sports organizations respond appropriately, yet strategically. The research concludes by offering implications for future social media and sports communication research. i DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to Kirsten, Walker, and Connor, without whose love and support this project would never have been completed.

  • Flake-Report.45Am.Pdf
Dear Taxpayer, In 2013, a roaring crowd cheered as the Atlanta Falcons welcomed ϴϬ National Guard members who unfurled an American flag across the Georgia Dome’s turf. Little did those fans—or millions of other Americans—know that the National Guard had actually paid the Atlanta Falcons for this display of patriotism as part of a $315,000 marketing contract. This unfortunate story is not limited to professional football, but is repeated at other professional and college sporting events around the nation. In fact, these displays of paid patriotism are included within the $6.8 million that the Department of Defense (DOD) has spent on sports marketing contracts since fiscal year 2012. Consider this: Śonoring five Air Force Žfficers put $1,500 into the pockets of the LGalaxy. In another example, taxpayers footed the $10,000 bill for an on-field swearing-in ceremony with the World Series finalist New York Mets. And the list goes on. By paying for such heartwarming displays like recognition of wounded warriors, surprise homecomings, and on-field enlistment ceremonies, these displays lost their luster. Unsuspecting audience members became the subjects of paid-marketing campaigns rather than simply bearing witness to teams’ authentic, voluntary shows of support for the brave men and women who wear our nation’s uniform. This not only betrays the sentiment and trust of fans, but casts an unfortunate shadow over the genuine patriotic partnerships that do so much for our troops, such as the National Football League’s Salute to the Service campaign. While many professional sporting teams do include patriotic events as a pure display of national pride, this report highlights far too many instances when that is simply not the case.

  • What Is Your Idea of Perfect Happiness? Hanging out with My Kids and All My Friends and Family
Proust The star of Questionnaire Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora on Patricia midlife crises Arquette and motherhood What is your idea of perfect happiness? Hanging out with my kids and all my friends and family. What is your greatest fear? Burying people I love. Which historical igure do you most identify with? I admire a lot of historical igures, but the people I most identify with are those who don’t become famous––they’re moms and other normal people. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? My PTSD. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Lying and a lack of morals and ethics. I am not very good at singular answers. Sorry. What is your greatest extravagance? When I was turning 40, I bought a Porsche. The fact that I was doing it kind of repulsed me, and I realized I was having a midlife crisis. But 10 years later, I still drive that car every day and I love it. What is your favorite journey? I am really digging this whole journey. It’s bloody and raw at times, but in general I am grateful for the whole ride. What do you con- sider the most overrated virtue? Beauty. What do you dislike most about your ap- pearance? I’m actually just trying to go with the groove of getting older … and be happy celebrating the phases of the human experience. If there was a drug made tomorrow that made you live forever looking like your 20-year-old self, I wouldn’t take it.
