Municipality of Novo mesto Welcome to Novo mesto! • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g53TAJkAVIU Location • Novo mesto is the capital of the Dolenjska region in South-East Slovenia. • It is located midway (on the A2 motorway) between two capitals: 70 km southeast of Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana and 80 km west of Croatia’s capital Zagreb. Novo mesto in brief • With a population of about 23,300, Novo mesto is the seventh largest town in Slovenia. • The Municipality of Novo mesto is one of the eleven Urban Municipalities in Slovenia. • Total municipal area is 236 square km, with 37,280 inhabitants. • Novo mesto is the economic, educational, cultural, business, administrative, religious and sports centre of the south-eastern part of the country. Novo mesto today • Hub of activities, which goes far beyond the regional framework • Export capital of Slovenia: recognisable by its exceptionally successful pharmaceutical, automotive, construction, textile and other industries, as the municipality is home to large companies such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV. • Educational centre: 9 primary schools, music school, the renowned tradition of secondary grammar school, the large School Centre and the state-of-the-Art Centre for Biotechnology and Tourism, have been in recent years joined by institutions of higher education; and we have also established the University of Novo mesto. Novo mesto today • Religious centre: From 2006 Novo mesto is the seat of the Diocese of Novo mesto that includes 71 Parishes and covers 159,600 people in total area of 2,159 square km. • Cultural centre: From 2006 Novo mesto is also the seat of the Anton Podbevšek Theatre (APT) that is the youngest professional Slovenian theatre and the first to be established and to operate in the region of Dolenjska and Bela krajina. • Sports heritage as an important element of the town's cultural heritage • Through various cultural, sporting, social and entertainment events, we encourage and build the atmosphere of a healthy spirit for all generations. • Together with five other Slovenian towns Novo mesto was the European Capital of Culture 2012. However, the Krka is not just lovely to look at, you can go rowing or fishing on it or travel down the river in a raft. Although the numerous mill wheels that used to be turned by the river have long since stopped turning, you can still see these vestiges of the past in Vavta Vas and a few other locations in the municipality. Just a stone’s throw above the green river rises Straška Gora.

    Fishing in the waters of Novo mesto Fishing Club Slovenia Dear fishermen! The Novo mesto Fishing Club (Ribiška družina Novo mesto) is in terms of membership the biggest of 64 fishing clubs in Slovenia which have been entrusted by the state with the management of fish population in Slovene rivers and lakes. The Novo mesto fishing Club manages 350 ha of water surface in fishing area of Novo mesto-Žužemberk. This includes river Krka from Zagradec to Mrše~a vas in the length of 59 km with all the river’s tributaries of which the most important ones for fishermen are Radeš~ica, Temeni- ca from Velik Gaber until its mouth and fishponds Blato at Trebnje and Vodranec at Oto~ec. The Krka river has three fishing districts: I. district is salmonid area where brown trout and rain- bow trout are represented. II. district is mixed salmonid-cyprinid area where among salmonid species there are brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling and Danube salmon (huchen), and among cypri- nids the most numerous are Danube roach, nase, barbel, chub, carp, tench and pike. III. district is cyprinid area, in which there are mostly Danu- be roach, nase, barbel, chub, carp, tench, vimba, freshwa- 1 ter breams, roach, bleak, Red Eye and from the predator fish also pike, wels, chrup and huchen. In the Radaš~ica brook salmonid species such as: brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling are represented. In the fishpond Blato there are cyprinid species, among which the most numerous are carps, tenches, breams and pike-perches. Novo mesto fishing Club is one of rare Slovene fishing clubs where two autochthonous fish species: Danube roach and nase are independently bread and it is the only fishing club having established a system of yearly fish hatchery of half year old Danube roach and nase juveniles 2 intended for repopulation of those species in the fishing districts of the river Krka and its tributaries.
