American Councils — to create informed and empowered global citizens who can succeed in an increasingly interconnected world — focuses first and foremost on U.S. engagement through educational and professional cooperation with non-English- speaking regions of the world. Unlike the geopolitical conditions that brought about the creation of American Councils 40 years ago, contemporary communications technologies have effectively eliminated geography and time as barriers to transnational exchange. Yet the need for serious understanding of regional differences and for high-level competencies in world languages and cultures, the cornerstones of our organization’s historic mission, are arguably more critical today than at any time in the past. American Councils had its beginnings in 1974 when a group of Russian language and area specialists organized to reach through the Iron Curtain, using education and knowledge sharing to expand cooperation among academics of both countries. What started as an unconventional exchange of scholars from Amherst, Harvard, MIT, and Northwestern with counterparts in the Soviet Union evolved into four decades of educational and professional exchange, joint research, and collaboration in curriculum, assessment, and innovation. Today, we boast more than 55,000 alumni from all over the world, as detailed on page 31 of this report. Each succeeding decade of American Councils’ work has brought major new opportunities for realizing our mission, as well as major challenges, many of them geopolitical. American Councils’ extensive experience in Russia and post- Soviet Eurasia provides a strong background for developing educational linkages and implementing programming in other post-authoritarian and emerging economies around the world: the need for improved regional, linguistic, and cultural understanding is in the mutual interest of the U.S. and our many partner countries in the Middle East, East and South Asia, the Near East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. American Councils-administered programs have benefited from U.S. and foreign government political and financial support since their inception 40 years ago. Our mission is to ensure equal access for talented individuals to high-quality international programs, based on the principles of transparency, academic merit, and open access without regard to economic, social or political status, race or gender, ethnicity or religion, or sexual identification. We believe that access to international learning, overseas research, and professional development opportunities are as important for the United States as they are for other countries. The advantages derived will strengthen trade relationships, improve national and international security, and ensure continued robust circulation of new ideas and innovation in the arts, humanities, science and technology, and social enterprise. The 2014 annual report details some of the challenges, opportunities, and successes faced by American Councils over the last four decades. Today, we leverage this experience to continue to expand and deepen our programmatic offerings into new geographies like Indonesia, Poland, and Timor-Leste. Both new and well established geographies will be reflected in American Councils’ new strategic plan, which addresses the expanding need for high-quality, safe exchange opportunities for U.S. students in the world’s emerging economies, as well as for joint academic and research relationships with respected educational institutions around the world. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, alumni, and employees, I thank you for your interest in American Councils and welcome your inquiries or suggestions concerning our work. Sincerely, Dan E.
