The Omar Mosquera Foundation is a non profit foundation whose main objective is to strengthen the community development of Indigenous People in Ecuador with emphasis on health and education. They offer a platform that is strictly Ecuadorian Indigenous People oriented and designed to improve their quality of life and their right to defend themselves in the world today. In large segments of the urban and rural population of Ecuador the increased consumption of high caloric density foods and low physical activity has caused a steady increase in obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, it is important to note that in social-economically marginalized sectors, malnutrition and diseases related to specific nutrient deficiencies continues to grow and is an added burden to its people. The current nutritional situation shows that both forms of malnutrition are not mutually exclusive and in many poor households you can see the burden of disease in malnourished children, their parents and other relatives who are overweight or obese. Education geared towards knowledge related to malnutrition and its negative impact on the health of people is one of the main objectives of the foundation. OBJECTIVES: 1) To provide knowledge and skills necessary for the population to improve their standard of living, encouraging the adoption of healthy nutritional eating habits of a well balanced diet. 2) To provide knowledge in the handling and preparation of food, water treatment and the recycling of waste and trash. 3) To provide knowledge regarding obesity-related diseases and malnutrition. 4) To provide knowledge and reinforce the importance of good personal and dental hygiene. 5) To provide knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues -- prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, use of contraceptive methods (condoms ), pregnancy prevention and family planning. 6) To develop and validate educational materials regarding nutritional issues for children, families, teachers, community leaders and members of other community organizations. 7) To promote government food inspections. 8) To provide basic medical care and preventive medicine. Free medical drugs and delivery service to all communities while supplies last. 9) To provide free educational materials for teachers, students and the general public, as well as free educational courses, workshops and lectures on: nutrition, personal hygiene, STDs, pregnancy prevention, family planning, drug addiction and alcoholism.
