The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 by Sunyoung Yang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Sunyoung Yang Year of 2015 The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 Sunyoung Yang Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2015 Abstract In this dissertation I will shed light on the interwoven process between Internet development and neoliberalization in South Korea, and I will also examine the formation of new subjectivities of Internet users who are also becoming neoliberal subjects. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve. -

BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION AMERICAN AND KOREAN LANDSCAPES OF KOREAN International Voices in Biblical Studies In this first of its kind collection of Korean and Korean American Landscapes of Korean biblical interpretation, essays by established and emerging scholars reflect a range of historical, textual, feminist, sociological, theological, and postcolonial readings. Contributors draw upon ancient contexts and Korean American and even recent events in South Korea to shed light on familiar passages such as King Manasseh read through the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, David and Bathsheba’s narrative as the backdrop to the prohibition against Biblical Interpretation adultery, rereading the virtuous women in Proverbs 31:10–31 through a Korean woman’s experience, visualizing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and demarcations in Galatians, and introducing the extrabiblical story of Eve and Norea, her daughter, through story (re)telling. Media Content The next players of China’s growth A look into the growth pattern of China’s culture industry Overweight (Maintain) China has become a central player in almost every industry across the world. The media content industry is no exception. In our recent overseas marketing trip, we met many Industry Report foreign investors asking about Korean content stocks, and were left with the impression March 23, 2016 that investors were looking for the next players to benefit from China’s growth. English-only policies are often seen as xenophobic and discriminatory. However, that may not be the case for South Korea’s Framework Act on Korean Language, which mandates the use of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, for official documents by government institutions. Despite the resemblance between the Framework Act on Korean Language and English-only policies, the Framework Act should be understood differently than English-only policies because the Hangeul-only movement has an inverse history to English-only movements. -

The London Korean Film Festival 2011 제6회 런던한국영화제 3-24 November The annual festival of the best of Korean Cinema returns to London for 2011 An Introduction by the London Korean Film Festival Advisor Tony Rayns No film culture in East Asia is more accomplished or varied than South Korea’s, and this annual festival – now in its sixth year! – does Britain a fantastic service by bringing a wide range of new Korean cinema to screens in London and other cities. Most British viewers hadn’t seen a single Korean film as recently as ten years ago, and the frequently-asked-question is: where did all this phenomenal filmmaking come from? The short answer is that South Korea emerged from a long period of ‘darkness’ in 1993, and that the resulting freedoms fuelled a surge in creativity. The longer answer is that the world has rarely seen a more radical overnight transformation of a film industry. Regulation and censorship were swept away, new film festivals and distributors brought a torrent of international films to Korea for the first time, and a new generation of producers, directors, writers and actors seized the chance to make ambitious and exciting films. In the last two decades, South Korea has developed a rich film culture. It encompasses mainstream entertainments, masterly arthouse films, animation, documentary, indie films of all shapes and sizes and even a surge in experimental filmmaking. Backing it all up are new film schools and film studies courses and prolific publications of film magazines and books. The London Korean Film Festival has a very simple aim: to bring a taste of all this to British audiences. -

SHOULD WE PASS ON “PASSING WOMEN”?: THE STAKES OF (TRANS)GENDER ONTOLOGIES FOR SOUTH KOREAN NAMJANGYEOJA TELEVISION DRAMAS BY SHELBY STRONG THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in East Asian Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Professor Jeffrey T. Martin ABSTRACT Scholarship has gendered the protagonists of namjangyeoja dramas, South Korean live- action television dramas that focus on the lives of female-assigned people who pass as men, as “women”. I argue that we must push back against this narrow reading of namjang characters and instead embrace ambiguity and plural possibilities in namjang gender representations. The widespread pattern of namjang characters being depicted as being coerced into “confessing” that they are “women” calls into question the idea that their “real” gender can only be read as female, static, and singular. Indeed, a deeper reading reveals how some namjang protagonists are portrayed as identifying as gender non-binary and gender fluid. I propose that using “transgender” and “namjangyeoja” in conjunction with each other can help us orient to transgender possibilities in namjang dramas and illuminate how the pervasive practice of using “namjangyeoja” to categorize performances of gender nonconformity by female-assigned people is imbricated with institutionalized forms of transphobic heteronormative familism in South Korea. Ultimately, I argue that we must be vigilant about how our choice to affirm certain ontologies (e.g., “namjangyeoja”) over others (e.g., “transgender”) enacts epistemological forms of violence that support larger, institutionalized projects of death by exclusion and illegibility. -
