Abstract Adults of the trematode parasite Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 were found in the cyprinid Bar- bus barbus (L.) during a parasitological investigation of endohelminths in the years 2001 and 2002 in the Danube downstream of Vienna, Austria. This is the first record of A. limacoides in barbel from the Austrian part of the Danube system. Zusammenfassung Adulte Formen des Trematoden Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 wurden in einer Population der Barbe Barbus barbus (L.) in der Donau flussab von Wien gefunden. Die Erfassung erfolgte im Rahmen einer fischparasitologischen Aufnahme in den Jahren 2001 und 2002. Es ist der erste gesicherte Fund von A. limacoides in der Barbe im österreichischen Teil der Donau. Keywords: Aspidogaster limacoides, Barbus barbus, Trematoda, Austria, Danube Introduction The subclass of Aspidogastrea (FAUST & TANG, 1936) consists of a small group of trematodes with a worldwide distribution comprising about 80 species and has not been described for Austria yet. The Aspidogastrea parasitise poikilothermous animals like crustaceans, molluscs, fish, and reptiles in marine and freshwater environments. In contrast to their sister group, the digenean trematodes, they present simple life cycles with no multiplicative larval stages. Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 was found in molluscs and fish from river basins in the Ponto-Caspian region (e.g. BYKHOVSKAYA- PAVLOWSKAYA & al, 1962, EVLANOV 1990, NAGIBINA & TIMOVEEVA 1971). The hosts involved consist of mollusc and a definitive or facultative vertebrate host, nevertheless most aspidogastrids require only a single host to complete their life cycle (RHODE 1972). -

We list 61 species representing 13 genera within 4 families and 2 orders of aspidogastreans associated with 298 species of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. The majority of records include bivalves (44% of the total number of host-parasite associations), whereas records from bony fishes represent 32% of host-parasite associations. -

Methods: We initially harvested the freshwater mussels living in the Yangtze River running through Anhui area, and labeled them with corre- sponding number. Then the samples were dissected for isolating the fl ukes, which were identifi ed by conventional staining. Aspidogaster limacoides Diesing, 1834 was identified in two specimens of roach ( Rutilus rutilus L.) from middle Odra River (Lower Silesia, SW Poland). As the species is new to the Polish parasitofauna, a description, mea - surements and figure are presented. Key words : Aspidogaster limacoides , Aspidogastrea, Poland, roach. Infections were found in some fresh-water bodies in Poland (Konin Lakes System) and Ukraine (Danube Basin). The prevalence of infection ranged from 5 to 30%, intensity of infection – 1-2 specimens/mollusk. Free-living species of ciliates, nematodes and chironomides were also discovered during the investigation of S. woodiana in the Konin Lakes System (Poland). Key words: Sinanodonta woodiana, Aspidogaster conchicola, symbiotic ciliates, host specificity The Chinese pond mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea 1834) (Figure 1) is an invasive species of fresh-water bivalve that has been introduced into surface water bodies in Europe (Petro 1984; Sarkany-Kiss 1986; Girardi and Ledoux 1989; Kraszewski and Zdanowski 2001; Yurishinents and Korniushin 2001; Manganelli et al. 1998), Central America and Indonesia (Watters 1997). The natural habitats of mollusks of the genus Sinanodonta are the water-bodies of the large Eastern Asian rivers basins, particularly those of the Amur and Yangtze Rivers (Bogatov and Zatravkin 1988). -

The patterns of the neuropeptide FMRFamide and serotonin (5-HT) immunoreactive (IR) elements in the nervous system of Aspidogaster conchicola (Aspidogastrea, Aspidogastridae) are described using immunocytochemistry and confocal scanning laser mi- croscopy. Both FMRFamid and 5-HT immunoreactivities occur in the bilobed brain, the three pairs of longitudinal nerve cords and many transverse commissures. The adhesive disc is strongly innervated by FMRFamide-IR nerve fibres. Many 5-HT-IR neurones were observed on the reproductive organs.
