Participation in irrigation agriculture and the close proximity of the town of Yuma across the river have given the Yuma a measure of prosperity and sense of self-respect and importance which is too rare among reservation Indians. This unusual degree of assimila- tion has, hbwever, resulted in a rapid disappearance of native crafts, so that, although the sense of tribal solidarity is remarkably strong, American culture has penetrated deeply into their material life. Pottery, basketry, and native weaving are virtually extinct. The aboriginal cultivation has necessarily been supplanted and the social organization of former times has largely- disappeared. The ceremonial and religious life of the people has, nevertheless, suffered little disturbance and is at present practically unaffected by the .thin veneer of niethodism and catholicism which compete for their adherence in the missions at Port Yuma. • The Yuma reservation was visited in December-January, 1928-29 and again in September and December, 1929. [Vol. Since the material culture was known to have followed the Mohave pattern and is at the present time decayed and adulterated by white influence, my attention has been devoted primarily to •social, cere- monial, and religious practice. I have, however, endeavored to give a balanced, if incomplete, picture of the culture as it was at the beginning of the nineteenth century. INTRODUCTION When first encountered the Yuma were one of a large group of peoples occupying the bottom lands of the lower Colorado from the Needles, California, to the gulf of California. The aboriginal popula- tion of this region was, exclusive of the higher cultures of Middle America, probably as dense as any in the New World. This concen- tration of people depended, however, on no great elaboration of material civilization but rath'er on fortunate environmental circum- stances, which a crude agriculture and moderate industry in the col- lection of wild fruits were able to exploit with relatively little effort. The life of the Lower Colorado tribes, despite their desert environ- ment, was less arduous than that of the Basin gatherers or the hunters of the Plains, while their economic security was probably as great as among the Pueblo peoples. Relatively undisturbed in Spanish and Mexican times the Yuma maintained their aboriginal culture almost unchanged until the fifties of the last century, when the establishment of the caravan trail to Southern California terminated their freedom.

Aron, Chair This dissertation explores the social, cultural, and economic history of horse stealing among both American Indians and Euro Americans in Lincoln County, Nebraska from 1860 to 1890. It shows how American Indians and Euro-Americans stole from one another during the Plains Indian Wars and explains how a culture of theft prevailed throughout the region until the late-1870s. But as homesteaders flooded into Lincoln County during the 1870s and 1880s, they demanded that the state help protect their private property. These demands encouraged state building efforts in the region, which in turn drove horse stealing – and the thieves themselves – underground. However, when newspapers and local leaders questioned the efficacy of these efforts, citizens took extralegal steps to secure private property and augment, or subvert, the law.

The United States is the self-proclaimed angel of democracy in the world, but just as George Orwell warned, war is the health of the state, and in the language of newspeak, democracy is the term we use to hide the reality of the nature of our warfare state. In truth, the United States of America has been engaged in some kind of war during 218 out of the nation’s total 239 years of existence. Put another way, in the entire span of US history, this country has only experienced 21 years without conflict. For a sense of perspective on this sobering statistic, consider these4 facts about the history of US involvement in military conflict: Pick any year since 1776 and there is about a 91% chance that America was involved in some war during that calendar year. No U.S. president truly qualifies as a peacetime president. Instead, all U.S. presidents can technically be considered “war presidents.” The U.S. has never gone a decade without war. The only time the U.S. went five years without war (1935-40) was during the isolationist period of the Great Depression.

CREDIT LINE: Oatman Massacre Collection, Y-MS 6, Arizona Historical Society-Rio Colorado Division, Yuma BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: The Oatman Massacre occurred in the early months (February or March) of 1851. Royce Oatman and his family, pioneers looking to find a new life in California, were traveling towards Fort Yuma from Tucson. The family set out alone, having decided to press on when the pioneer caravan they were travelling with had opted to rest and resupply at a friendly Pima village. The Oatman family were attacked by a hostile tribe (the survivors identified the group as Tonto Apache, while others have said Yavapai or even Maricopa). The parents, eldest daughter, and two youngest children were killed in the attack. Two daughters, the 13 year old Olive and the seven year-old Mary were taken captive and the eldest son, Lorenzo was beaten and left for dead. Lorenzo survived and eventually began a long effort to rescue his sisters. Meanwhile, Olive and Mary spent a year doing slave labor before being traded to the daughter of a Mojave chieftain. Mary eventually succumbed to starvation and a weak constitution but Olive survived. After four years among the Mojave, Olive was ransomed to the military at Fort Yuma, where she was quickly reunited with her brother Lorenzo. The life of the Oatman siblings after the reunion is sketchy, and filled with contradictory rumors. A very successful book was written about the events by Royal B.

Sousa and Professor Thomas J. Carlson, Co-Chairs The targeted application of prescribed fire has long been used by Native Californian peoples to manage plant resources of cultural value. Their ability to employ this management tool has been increasingly restricted by local, state and federal agencies in response to recent drought conditions and the highly flammable state of most western U.S. forests, where, for decades, fires of any magnitude have been suppressed as a matter of policy. This diminished access to cultural prescribed fire has impacted tribal access to many of the plant resources and cultural activities upon which Karuk and Yurok cultures are based.

    Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology Vol. 23, No. 2, pp. 155-178 (2001) The Creation and Flute Lure Myths: Regional Patterns in Southern California Traditions DON LAYLANDER ASM Affiliates, Inc. 543 Encinitas Blvd., Suite 114, Encinitas, GA 92024 Among the 'ways in 'which traditional narratives shed light on prehistory, regional variations in shared myths provide insights concerning cultural conservatism or fluidity and the patterns of social interaction among groups. A comparative analysis offwo myths recorded in numerous versions from southern California, 'western Arizona, and northern Baja California suggests that the region's traditional cultures 'were shaped by ongoing borro'wing and innovation to a greater extent than has sometimes been supposed, and that individual narrative motifs typically had relatively short lifespans ofafe'w centuries at most. Cultural interaction among the region's different peoples 'was evidently little constrained by disparate linguistic heritages, competing military alliances, or social and economic dissimilarities. "KTative Californian traditional narratives shed light on regional prehistory and ethnohistory in -/.\ several different ways. In some cases, they directly preserved information about past events (e.g., Laylander). More generally, they reflect past lifeways, including material culture and social organization, but in particular they mirror ideas about human nature, morality, and aesthetics which were otherwise often not well documented (e.g., Blackburn 1975). The present study considers two additional ways in which traditional narratives are revealing, based on interethnic sharing of common narrative themes and story elements. Diachronically considered, the extent to which patterns of narrative sharing crosscut the primary lines of cultural descent, as those were marked by linguistic affiliations, is a measure of the extent to which the groups' traditions were open to borrowing and innovation, rather than static and conservative.
