The Ragin’ Cajuns store located in the Union and at Russo Park will have approved bags for purchase. TRANSPORTATION TO FAMILY TAILGATE AT RUSSO PARK AND CAJUN FIELD Busses will operate continuously on Saturday beginning at 9am and ending 1 hour after the game. Busses will depart from the main entrance to the union on McKinley Street and drop off at Cajun Field. After the game, parents and students needing transportation back to campus should exit GATE E and proceed to the corner of Reinhardt and Cajundome Blvd. QUESTIONS? NEED ASSISTANCE? CONTENTS The magazine is sort of a living, breathing document, right up until we send it to the printer for pre-press work. We start out with an outline of topics; content shifts and morphs as we refine what we’ll write about. Often, by the time we’re wrapping up, many of the articles collectively convey a message about the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in ways that we may not have envisioned initially. This issue is a good example. As we were finishing it, I realized that it’s filled with stories about people who embody the Ragin’ Cajun spirit. EDITOR’S NOTE EDITOR’S Take 97-year-old James Bollich, for instance. He survived the Bataan Death March, one of the most horrific ordeals soldiers experienced in FEATURES DEPARTMENTS World War II. His face was impassive. No clues there. Finally, after what seemed like a long time, he spoke. “You could live to be 120 years old,” he said. I smiled because I thought he was joking. “I’m not sure I want to be 120 years old,” I replied, flippantly. “You’re assuming that you would be 120 and have some sort of impairment. What if your quality of life were still good?” he coun- EDITOR’S NOT tered, with an earnestness that surprised me. It took me a second to grasp that he was serious. He went on to say that he believes it might be possible to live much longer than we can imagine right now. The timing of our conversation was apropos, because I’ve been thinking about the passage of time a lot as we have prepared this issue. An article about the new Ernest J. Gaines Center, for instance, reminded me that the first cover story I wrote for La Louisiane, in Fall 1993, was about Ernest Gaines. He told me that he would always be loyal to the university because of the opportunity it had given him to concentrate on his writing. Like one of the honorable characters in his novels, he has kept his word.
