5 Kynžvart Chateau

The Metternich family built a baroque castle on the site of a Renaissance fortress. In 1820, an Austrian politician and diplomat, Chancellor Klemens von Metternich, began the chateau’s next renovation in the Viennese classicist style supervised by Viennese architect Pietro Nobile. There is a golf course in the chateau park with ponds, gazebos and sculptures. Various art collections with unique Egyptian sarcophagi, Greek vases and excavations from Pompeii are of exceptional value.

7 Šternberk Castle

The extensive castle complex with rich decorations ranging from Gothic to Art Nouveau has been renovated in the spirit of romantic historicism. At least two of the personalities who dwelt at the castle signiﬁ cantly shaped its appearance and the direction of European diplomacy and politics. Albrecht II of Sternberk often accompanied Emperor Charles IV on his diplomatic tours throughout Europe. Later on, Franz Joseph of Liechtenstein used his diplomatic skills in Russia to renew Russia‘s relations with Austria-Hungary.

The original water castle was gradually expanded and transformed into a large Renaissance residence for the Pernštejn family, in the immediate vicinity of the historic city center. The elements of the late Gothic and Early Renaissance blend into the sgraffi to facade of this fortifi ed palace. In addition to other museum expositions, visitors may also see a rare civil defence shelter in the fortifi cations. This Baroque jewel is one of the noble mansions with extensive art collections where Leopold II Berchtold lived. His diplomatic service in Paris, London and Russia exceeds the country‘s borders with its signiﬁ cance. This Harrach family castle with an English park and a golf course was built in the Tudor Gothic style. The builder was inspired by the renovation of Crewe Hall in England. 15 Kunštát Castle and Chateau

One of the oldest castles in Moravia, the family seat of the lords of Kunštát and a place of dwelling for the young future Czech King George of Poděbrady, who in 1464 presented a draft of the Treaty on the General Peace Organization of the Christian States to other European rulers. The castle was gradually remodelled into a Renaissance and Baroque chateau. During the last phase of refurbishment, the chateau interiors were returned to how they appeared when the last noble owners lived there.

17 Hradec nad Moravicí Chateau

Princes of the Lichnovský family had the chateau renovated in the Empire style, nevertheless remnants of its Renaissance look are preserved in the Renaissance vaults and stucco decorations. A Neo-Gothic Red Chateau was built close to the entrance to the English park. The princes also had the interiors modernized, and eventually ordered the White Tower to be built. Karel Maxmilián Lichnovský acted as a German diplomat and hosted Emperor William II here. An international interpretive music contest commemorates the stay of Ludwig van Beethoven.

19 Benešov nad Ploučnicí Chateau

The chateau complex of the Upper and Lower Chateaux, three palaces, a church and a chapel is a unique example of architecture from the Saxon Renaissance period on the territory of Bohemia, and it has been almost completely preserved in its original form. The architecture is complemented by expositions showing the life of lower gentry at the mansion in the 16th and 17th centuries. For almost 20 years, Benešov Castle belonged to Wilhelm Kinsky of Vchynice, who was a diplomat in the service of Albrecht of Wallenstein.

From the original castle, only the cellars carved in rock and the Gothic chapel have been preserved. After a ﬁ re, the castle was rebuilt into a monumental Renaissance mansion. This Renaissance palace at Prague Castle with a panoramic view of Prague was redesigned by architect Carlo Lurago into its current Baroque form.
