THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 01 CONNECTING TO CARE Message from the Chair of the Board and the President and CEO

It’s a common saying that ‘people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ Every single day, more than five thousand people come to work at the JGH. Providing their patients with an improved quality of life while actively applying their knowledge, staff consistently do their share to show they care. A place for those who need to heal, your Hospital is also a space for community and learning. It comes as no surprise to me that we’ve continued to build on an already solid foundation. Did you know the JGH was named #1 Hospital in Quebec by Newsweek magazine for the second year in a row?

We are grateful to you for joining your Foundation on this journey. Thank you for sharing our vision of growth and transformation and thank you for being a driving force working toward connecting to care and to one another the way we always have.

On behalf of our doctors, researchers, nurses, and allied health professionals — and especially our patients,

THANK YOU.

Harvey Levenson | Chair of the JGH Foundation

Just as you are transforming your Hospital, aiming to provide excellence in research, innovation and patient-care by continually donating funds, time and resources, the Hospital is revolutionizing the systems, tools and equipment its staff uses to remain the number one hospital in Quebec. A new era of digital health is upon us and the 2019-2020 fiscal year serves as the perfect example of what we are capable of when we connect to care.

This digital transformation means we are connecting you and your healthcare team with information technology to empower you to manage your health and the health of your family. Using telehealth in the form of telemedicine, artificial intelligence to speed recovery times and data to improve results: we work wonders. Connected care is positively affecting outcomes for patients here at the JGH and worldwide already. At the tail-end of this fiscal year, we collectively came face-to-face with an international health crisis that your Hospital handled with the utmost care. The COVID-19 pandemic only provided further proof to our government, our allied health professionals and ourselves that going digital was essential.

Investing in this information technology allows doctors, nurses and staff to apply the right care, at the right time, in the right place, to the right patient. On behalf of our Board of Directors, allied health professionals, and the patients and their families who benefit from your charitable contributions, we thank you for the tremendous impact you’ve had on your Hospital this year.

Bram Freedman | President and CEO of the JGH Foundation

02 THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 CONNECTING TO CARE. YOU HAVE THAT POWER.

As the Jewish General Hospital and our CIUSSS continue to grow and mature, one of our most important objectives is to keep improving the user experience for staff and patients alike.

Healthcare systems worldwide are revolutionizing, and telehealth has become top of mind for many doctors, researchers, and allied healthcare professionals. With the current technologies available to us and new ones Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg appearing each day, the time to transform how we deliver healthcare and improve patient care and safety is now.

Connected Care is the way forward, allowing patients and healthcare providers easy access to medical information. Just as artificial intelligence influences the way we drive our cars and purchase recommended items, it also can promote personalized care and help patients understand how to live a healthier life, reducing and even avoiding future health problems. Being leaders in Connected Care is our next great challenge and together we are making it happen.

Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg | President and CEO of the Integrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal

COVID-19 was definitely a catalyst for the type of change we’ve been talking about and envisioning for quite a while. Of course, the pandemic was not the catalyst anyone wanted, because it was so disruptive and tragic in so many ways. But there’s no denying that it pushed us in the direction we needed to go. In a recent survey conducted by the Digital Health and Quality teams, healthcare users at the JGH have expressed solid approval in response to questions about their experiences using telehealth. Of those surveyed, a total of 90 percent agreed they would use telehealth again.

04 THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 SPECIAL CHAIRMAN’S AWARD

To be acknowledged with the Foundation's Special Chairman's Award is truly an honour for The Auxiliary. It is an even greater honour to be recognized for the important contributions The Auxiliary has made to the hospital over their 84-year history. We are so very proud to be a part of the every day life of the hospital. On behalf of The Auxiliary, the Executive and Board, thank you for this tribute. - Nancy Rubin | Director of The JGH Auxiliary

This year, a special Chairman’s Award was given to The Auxiliary for the tremendous work they do on behalf of the Hospital. In existence since 1936, The Hospital Auxiliary is an essential partner to the Foundation and the Hospital. Every year, they bring in half a million dollars through their boutiques, collections and sales.

Director of The Auxiliary, Nancy Rubin, and her team have been active as a volunteer-nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Jewish General Hospital through its businesses and special fundraising endeavours. Supplying a broad range of innovative programs and services to patients, their families and the community, they are also co-organizers of the community-led MINDSTRONG event, which has raised over $8 million over the past five years toward improving outcomes for thousands of people who struggle with their mental health. Always ready to step in to lend a helping hand, The Auxiliary is indispensable. Congratulations to the whole team. We couldn’t do it without you!

THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 05 CONNECTING TO CARE

I believe that the future of surgery is going to be WORKING robotics where it is possible. The Da Vinci robot’s computer interface — which exists between the surgeon and the robot — opens up a whole other WONDERS. realm of possibility. Much like in aviation, where computers do everything in airplanes today, that’s the future of robotics for surgeons. Soon the robot YOU HAVE will inform the surgeon about so much more, based on its analysis using artificial intelligence. With the improvement of all the systemic treatments — such as THAT POWER. molecular treatment and immunotherapy — surgery will have a very precise role to play in cancer treatment thanks to the computer’s ability to integrate all patient-related information into its system. It will ensure the surgeon gives the right surgery to the right patient, essentially providing a more personalized surgery and a better overall experience for the patient, with less complications, and especially, less pain. Thanks to private funds given to my team through the Foundation, we were able to purchase two Da Vinci robots and a new arm for them enabling surgeons like me to improve upon the patient experience even further. - Dr. Walter Gotlieb | Professor and Chief of the JGH’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecologic Oncology

06 THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 CONNECTING YOU TO CARE DIGITAL HEALTH AT THE JGH AND BEYOND

Patient-Centred Care Telemedicine, the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients using virtual care, is alive and well at the JGH. Remote-monitoring, video-conferencing and administrative workflows are connecting patients to care like never before.

• The JGH Department of Psychiatry uses video-conferencing to conduct psychiatric and mental health assessments, “broadcast” helpful webinar presentations to a large audience, and arrange group discussions at the Youth Drop-In clinic.

• The Telehealth Intervention Program for Isolated Older Adults was created to help raise vulnerable seniors' morale affected by mental health. Volunteers connect to clients for a weekly phone call to check-in and lift their spirits.

• At the JGH's Segal Cancer Centre, patients are now participating in virtual visits with their oncologist as an alternative to face-to-face meetings. Patients are also monitored remotely via a personalized, virtual clinic, in which nurse navigators make contact via Zoom to help manage symptoms and, where needed, offer timely interventions.

• The Beryl and Ralph Goldman Herzl Family Practice Centre can treat patients remotely thanks to a digital health record put in place pre-pandemic. Hospital staff were able to access it from wherever they were to maintain excellence in patient-centred care.

With additional funds to the Vicki and Stan Zack Family Teenage Health Unit, we’d be able to send out web-based materials that patients wouldn’t have access to without a fee, things like worksheets and handouts. But, it would especially allow for a secure online teleconferencing license for the clinic, allowing us to give group therapy securely and without any restrictions on the time or functionality of our interventions. - Dr. Perry Adler | Associate Director, Teenage Health Unit; Director, Psychology Internship & Training Program

THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 07 Innovation/Data Architecture Artificial intelligence, data banks, and analytics have become accessible to allied health professionals thanks to technological advancements. At the JGH, healthcare professionals use advanced equipment to compile data and to further excellence in patient-centred care.

The GE Discovery MI 5-Ring PET/CT scanner allows the Lisa and Robert Carsley Nuclear Imaging Centre to improve patient care in many ways. This new machine boasts cutting-edge digital detector technology and an extra-large field-of-view. What this means for patients is more scans overall, scans which are twice as fast, lower doses of harmful radiation and better image quality to uncover and resolve small lesions more precisely.

The JGH is rated the top hospital in the province, made up of great doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers. The Radiology Department is the key to finding out what’s hidden inside each of us. It dawned on me that the cardiology and oncology departments get their full share of dollars when needed, but other sections of the hospital do not. Contributing funds towards a new PET scan seemed like a perfect fit for myself to an underfunded department. – Robert Carlsey | Loyal JGH Foundation donor

The Da Vinci robot allows surgeons like Dr. Walter Gotlieb, Chief of Gynecologic Oncology, to be more precise while operating on a patient. It is designed to facilitate surgery using a minimally invasive robotic approach, as it is controlled by a surgeon from a console. The computer interface brings another level of clinical know-how by leveraging information from the computer to enhance surgery.

Since I was able to have the Da Vinci Robot for my cancer surgery, I got away with much less rehabilitation time. At least four months less than what I expected. – Heather Adelson | Donor, Patient and Board Member

08 THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 Looking Ahead Dr. Justin Cross and his team are continuously working behind-the-scenes to make digital health and connected care at the JGH safer and more effective. Some initiatives include:

• One of the larger projects Dr. Cross and his team are currently planning is the electronic Connected Health Record which will contain patient information that is accessible in a secure manner, in real-time, from a variety of locations and settings. Having a unified, connected patient health record across the JGH and CIUSSS will have numerous benefits for all system users. Patients and caregivers will benefit through enhanced patient safety as health information is available, updated, and synchronized. Clinicians will benefit from readable documentation and related information, support tools, and improved ability to diagnose patients. The support of generous donors, like you, will makes this initiative a reality.

• In close collaboration with the IT Department, the JGH’s digital health team is continuously working to improve the posture of the JGH’s Cybersecurity Program as threats are omnipresent and constantly change. In addition to standard cybersecurity best practices, Dr. Cross’ team is implementing advanced protections to improve the JGH’s ability to detect and respond to cyber threats.

• Thanks to donors like you, the JGH focused its efforts during the first wave of the pandemic on COVID-19 Analytics, evaluating advanced disease models to help the Hospital predict the anticipated patient volumes that the JGH would expect to see due to the coronavirus. This helped allied health professionals more adequately plan and staff the units that needed to be opened to care for the increased volumes.

• Dr. Cross’ team also created clinician-focused Dashboarding to quickly display relevant medical information for the treating teams to help them more efficiently care for the increased number of patients during the pandemic.

Even though the healthcare user and practitioner may be far from each other, the bond between them remains strong. Telehealth provides users with the reassurance that their needs can be taken care of quickly and properly. - Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg | President and CEO of CIUSSS West-Central Montreal

14 THE JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2019 | 2020 BECOME LEGENDARY WITH A FEW WORDS IN YOUR WILL. YOU HAVE THAT POWER.

Built by a courageous, grass-roots community effort almost a century ago, and through the generosity and vision of literally generations of individuals and families, the JGH has become one of the pre-eminent hospitals — making Newsweek magazine’s list of top-100 best hospitals in the world! It is a McGill teaching hospital, one of two key teaching sites for the university preparing practitio- ners of the future. It’s also deeply involved in world-class research, providing the most innovative medical equipment and treatment, and does all of this with a unique, almost unheard of level of supportive, personal care for everyone who comes through its doors. A truly remarkable mission to accomplish and maintain.

Now, we must look to the future. We know we have the best. We know the hospital is in good hands with outstanding leadership. But we can see the challenges on the horizon. How do we continue to fulfill this lofty mission when we know that we must continually re-invest in the best medical professionals, the newest technology and systems? How can we react to the pressures of reduced government funding and time-consuming impositions? We must prepare for this future.

I happen to think that we have an obligation to leave this world a better place for our being here. We all have an opportunity, as we are able, to include a gift to the Jewish General Hospital Foundation in our estate plans as a way to guarantee that the Jewish General will be able to meet the challenges of the future. I have made such a gift and derive great joy in knowing that it is in place. - Jonathan Wener, C.M. | President, Jewish General Hospital 2000-2003
