What’s the end game? Rather than ask what you want to do, ask yourself how you want to feel every morning when you wake up, Cates said. Do you want to feel calm or energised? Like you’re part of a team or independent? What is the ideal end game? Recasting the question widens the scope of possibilities, though it requires you to shed the “shoulds” and “can’ts” that often keep people stuck. Cates described a client, a property manager in Chicago, who said his end game was to live on a beach overlooking water. They discussed how he could move to Miami, but logistically it was complicated. So instead he moved into a new home overlooking Lake Michigan and took a job in hospital administration, where his experience juggling projects was applicable. “The key for all of this is openness,” Cates said. “If you really have an end goal and you can really see what it is, there is more than one way to get to it.”

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir

It was the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir who eventually emerged triumphant in the battle for pole position on the UK Christmas singles chart. Their track, A Bridge Over You, combines Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water with Coldplay’s Fix You. The Choir first came to public prominence on the BBC 2 television programme, Sing While You Work. They reached the final but were beaten into second place by the choir from Severn Trent Water. The troupe of doctors, nurses, physios, porters, administrators and so on were delighted to have done so well. But their strong showing on Sing While You Work pales in comparison with topping the UK singles chart. A Bridge Over You was created in 2013 to mark the first anniversary of the Choir and to celebrate the thousands of dedicated NHS staff across Britain. It was promoted this year as a rallying cry against the perceived threat of Lewisham and Greenwich’s A&E department becoming the victim of government cuts. Two videos have been made. The original 2013 video is posted at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve1sevQpQLQ while a 2015 video can be seen at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=T8qHXlShfUQ All proceeds from the song will be shared between Macmillan Cancer Support, Carers UK, the mental health charity MIND and a number of healthcare charities in the Lewisham and Greenwich area.
