A close friend of Tom Bishop’s, Ionesco was also an impor- tant contributor to the founding of NYU in France. In honor of Bishop’s 80th birthday and Ionesco’s 100th, the party’s guests were invited to attend a premier performance of an original opera by French-American composer Jean-Philippe Calvin based on The Bald Soprano at the Athenée Théâtre Louis Jouvet. Donations from Bishop’s friends made the per- formance possible. The charming Italianate theatre was filled to capacity with the friends of NYU in France. The NYU in France staff and 40th anniversary volunteers In late April, students, faculty, alumni, University dignitaries and numerous friends of NYU in France gathered in Paris for a gala celebration of the program’s 40th anniversary.

They began a passionate affair, and the year after Paris was occupied in World War II they fled to New York with Tatiana's young daughter, Francine. There they determinedly rose to the top of high society, holding court to a Who's Who list of the midcentury's intellectuals and entertainers. Flamboyant and outrageous, bold and brilliant, they were irresistible to friends like Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dalí, and the publishing tycoon Condé Nast. But to those who knew them well they were also highly neurotic, narcissistic, and glacially self-promoting, prone to cut out of their lives, with surgical precision, close friends who were no longer of use to them. Tatiana became an icon of New York fashion, and the hats she designed for Saks Fifth Avenue were de rigueur for stylish women everywhere. Alexander Liberman, who devotedly raised Francine as his own child from the time she was nine, eventually came to preside over the entire Condé Nast empire.

Les lauréats ne peuvent être conviés par les Académiciens dans une de nos belles cérémonies qui, année après année, gardent toujours leur aura. Ils sont également frustrés des applaudissements d’un public nombreux et chaleureux. Et de champagne. Au moins pouvons- nous leur offrir ici ces éloges bien mérités. Nous saluons aussi la réouverture des librairies. Que de tels lieux soient fermés nous attriste tous, sachant que les ressources indispensables à notre vie intellectuelle et à celle de la nation nous attendent dans ces cavernes enchantées. Une des vocations de l’Académie consiste à repérer les talents et à encourager les auteurs en leur attribuant des prix. Elle récompense ainsi toutes sortes d’œuvres de création, de pensée et d’action. Ses diverses commissions prennent connaissance d’une multitude de livres et, grâce au bonheur de l’étymologie, en identifiant les écrits de grande valeur (de grand prix) afin de leur décerner une récompense (un prix), elle espère trouver des trésors précieux (d’un mot latin tiré de pretium, « prix ») que les lecteurs continueront de priser (même origine) à l’avenir. Elle n’oublie pas non plus que chaque lauréat est choisi parmi d’autres candidats méritants, car, comme le dit saint Paul, « dans les courses (...) tous courent, mais un seul obtient le prix ». Un livre est le fruit – nos lauréats le savent – d’une sorte de nécessité, d’un besoin que l’écrivain ne peut satisfaire autrement.

How we helped the oldest library in New York energize its brand while maintaining its distinguished character. © 2012 BERNHARDT FUDYMA DESIGN GROUP www.bfdg.com ConteXt GeorGe WashinGton read here In 1754, when there was no library in the city open to the public, the New York Society - a group of civic-minded individuals - formed a library in the belief that a subscription library which anyone could join,* and offering a broad range of books, “would be very useful as well as ornamental to the City.” It opened in a room in the old City Hall and for a century and a half, until the founding of the public library system, was known as ‘the city library.’ Broad Street looking north to Federal Hall. The Library was located on the 2nd floor in the west wing. During the Revolution, the Library’s books were looted by British soldiers occupying Manhattan. Some were torn up to make wadding for rifles and others were sold for rum. After the war a few books that had been stored at St. Paul’s Chapel in lower Manhattan were recovered, and others were found through advertisement. In 1785 when New York became the nation’s capital and Congress occupied the building (then renamed Federal Hall), the Library served as the first Library of Congress and was used by George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr among others. * Membership libraries began in the 18th century in America when societies or groups of individuals joined to purchase books for a commonly run library.

Dans la guerre de Civilisation totale dont la France et sa langue sont aujourd’hui la cible, de la part de l’axe anglo-saxon, l’État se réduit désormais trop souvent à n’être qu’une simple courroie de transmission coloniale, comme vient de l’illustrer tragiquement le projet de loi Fiaroso, du nom du ministre poussant la provocation jusqu’à prétendre que « la meilleure arme de la francophonie parfois [serait ] paradoxalement de faire des cours en anglais » ! En réponse à ce coup de force hégémonique de l’anglais, le 22 mars 2013, dans une déclaration de ses membres, « L'Académie Française, fidèle à sa vocation de gardienne de la langue et de son évolution », a demandé « instamment au législateur de renoncer à (…) une disposition portant atteinte au statut de la langue française dans l'Université », à « valeur symbolique » « d’autant plus grande qu’elle serait plus vague ».

    NOOLUME TUMBER ALLES V 12, N 4, F 2005 FROM THE HEAD LIBRARIAN: THE RENOVATION As many of you are aware from my remarks in the previous Library Notes, the Library is beginning work on Phase I of our renovation. This work will include replacing the main (east) elevator, restoring the building’s façade, and refurbishing selected interior spaces, including the second-floor restrooms. As with all this work, we will provide as much advance notice of it as possible, on our website and in notices posted at the Library. We have begun to solicit bids for the elevator and façade projects. We anticipate the façade work taking the better part of two months. It will involve placing scaffolding on the sidewalk at the front of the building and some minor disruption of interior activities because of work on the windows that must be done from inside. We do not think this work will disturb Library members and staff to the extent that Library services will be significantly affected. We will pack and store decorative items like porcelains and paintings, but the book collections and access to them should not be detrimentally affected by any of the Phase I work. The centerpiece of Phase I is the reconstruction of the elevator, which involves building a new cab, installing new stops on the sixth floor and Stack Level 3, and adding a mechanical space on the roof of the building. Elevator projects like this typically take six months or so to complete, and we hope to have work on ours fully underway this fall.

    ACTES DES TRENTE-TROISIÈMES ASSISES DE LA TRADUCTION LITTÉRAIRE (ARLES 2016) TRENTE-TROISIÈMES ASSISES DE LA TRADUCTION LITTÉRAIRE (ARLES 2016) L’EMPIRE CONTRE-ÉCRIT Si l’on considère que chaque langue exprime une façon unique de concevoir le monde, à la fin d’un conflit, il en apparaît toujours deux : la langue du vainqueur et celle du vaincu. Ce phénomène, que l’on constate pour toute sorte de conflits – mondiaux, sociaux, familiaux – est d’autant plus flagrant quand on considère le fait colonial, où de toute évidence, l’entre-langues qui naît de ces différentes conceptions du monde trouve un terreau fertile. Comment cela se traduit-il dans la littérature ? Et surtout, comment le traduit-on ? C’est à ces questions que vont tenter de répondre nos 33es Assises. Bien sûr, le sujet est vaste, et nous n’en couvrirons que certains aspects, sans volonté d’exhaustivité, mais plutôt avec celle d’illustrer, au gré des tables rondes, des rencontres et des ateliers, telle ou telle caractéristique de ce rapport entre la langue de “l’oppresseur” et celle de “l’opprimé”, au travers de textes et d’auteurs d’origines aussi diverses que possible. Un écrivain nous a paru emblématique du thème de cette année : Salman Rushdie, dont un article essentiel, “The Empire Writes Back”, porte sur ces questions. La traduction de ce titre constitue un parfait exemple de la problématique que posent ces Assises, qui s’intitulent donc : L’Empire contre-écrit. Que la force soit avec nous !
