SURREY CLOSED SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Neil Frankland, Nuffield West Byfleet professional, won the final of the Surrey Closed tournament on 14-15 January at Wimbledon Lakeside squash club, against Jamie Mathews, from Ebbisham, by 10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9. Frankland’s experience and powerful play, linked to some fine accu- rate drop shots, proved difficult for Jamie to get into the match. Jamie’s success in the competition came in the semi-finals where he overcame Phil Nightingale (Reigate) to reach the final. In the women’s event, Jane Allman, who trains at Surrey Sports Park at Surrey Uni., had her opponent, Sandra Dunn, from , on the defensive from the outset. Sandra squeezed the third game out of Allman, but went down 4-11, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11. As always the age category events produced some hard-fought matches, including two upper age groups - Over-55s and 60s which both went the full distance. In the O-55s, Steve Jackson (Bourne) slipped from 8-2 in the final game to lose to David Clarke (Colets) 8-10. Similarly, Patrick Fleming (Oxshott) pulled back from 0-5 down in the final game to win 10-9 with a drop shot which, ironically, his opponent Andy Larkin (New Malden) had been using to devastating effect throughout the match.

Other Results:

Grade B Dean Newberry (Limpsfield) bt. David Smith (Sy Heath) 7-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5.

Over-45 Marc Alridge (Purley) bt. Cliff Martindale (Lakeside) 9-1, 9-4, 2-9, 9-2.

Over-55 David Clarke (Colets) bt. Steve Jackson (Bourne) 9-4, 9-0, 3-9, 6-9, 10-8.

Over-60 Patrick Fleming (Oxshott) bt. Andy Larkin (New Malden) 4-9, 9-6, 9-3, 1-9, 10-9.

Women Over-50 Helen Dredge bt Julia Ledger 11-1, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6. C.R.Y. Cardiac Risk in the Young www.neildesai.org

John Bainbridge (Surbiton) 2-0 Surrey won the match 5-0, with Michael Hennings at number 2 the only one to drop a game. With All grades were played in a round robin format, with Derbyshire beating Staffordshire easily, after the winner of each group playing in the final. Staffordshire had beaten Lancs 5-0, it meant Surrey and Staffordshire had a winner takes all match on Sunday morning. At this point, Staffordshire informed us the number 4 wasn't turning up, so Mat Stone played their number 5 and won eas- ily 3-0. So Surrey lost the match 3-2, but played a good match against a stronger team. This means Surrey will stay in Division 1 for next sea- son.
