I. PROGRAMMING

a. Local Newscasts: KDFW FOX 4 schedules and airs more local news than any other in the State of at 43 hours of original news content each week, as follows: Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. Monday – Friday: Noon – 12: 30 p.m. Monday – Friday: 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Friday: 9 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Saturday: 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 9 p.m. – 10 p.m. Sunday: 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday Sports News: 10 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

b. Breaking News: KDFW FOX 4’s local news provides community service through consumer affairs pieces, severe weather updates, news investigations, and regular series pieces. A complete list of cut-ins and crawls is attached as Exhibit 1.

c. Local News: The station is committed to local journalism and covering local news. This includes the assignment of reporters to specific community-based beats. This includes neighborhood issues, local political candidates and topics, stories important to the different minority communities and groups and organizations working in the various communities.

The news staff primarily works from the main office in . They also work from bureaus in Fort Worth (Tarrant Co.) and Carrollton (Denton – Collin Co.). KDFW employs a diverse staff of reporters and producers to better cover the many different facets of this large market.

There are many stories aired that have had significant impact on the local community. Among the listings below include live coverage of floods from the KDFW helicopter, where helicopter personnel assisted emergency rescue teams in spotting and rescuing flood victims as the waters rose; other local stories produced in studio include:

e. Public Affairs Programming: KDFW FOX 4 is home to Insights, the oldest public affairs show in Dallas-Fort Worth. The weekly show (aired on Sundays at 8 a.m.) is a blend of news, information and entertainment, addressing issues and concerns of the community, particularly communities of color. Following are examples of stories covered over the past two years: • Veterans Stand Down – A look at the plight of 26-million veterans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. At least 1/3 of them are alone and homeless • Remembering Rosa Parks – The woman known as the Mother of the Civil Rights movement dies. Most people remember her because she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a White man. That incident sparked the Birmingham Bus Boycott • Native American Heritage Month Celebration – Highlighted a program at the Fort Worth Public Library saluting Native American custom, culture and heritage • Diabetes – November is Diabetes Awareness Month. More than 20-million Americans are now diabetic. Sharon Cox, a dietitian with the Parkland Health and Hospital System and a supporter of the American Diabetes Association talks about the importance of diet in preventing and controlling diabetes

In response to the growing drug crisis among teenagers involving a deadly type of heroin called “cheese,” FOX 4 partnered with the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse to produce an anti-drug PSA featuring local high school students. The PSI campaign received wide acclaim and was aired on Spanish language stations across the state. FOX 4 received a special award for the initiative from the Greater Dallas Council, and the Texas Attorney General announced plans to take the campaign statewide.

III. PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY

Communicating with the community is an ongoing mission for KDFW FOX 4. Contact with special interest groups is a regular part of the station’s operation. FOX 4 News reaches out to community members with hundreds of personal appearances by staff members every year. News personnel speak with a wide variety of groups and organizations and frequently return with story ideas. Input is solicited in KDFW’s newscasts and website, and ideas and opinions are sought from the community via telephone, email and letters. In addition, field crews have daily contact with members of the community and organizations, a rich source of information and ideas for future programming.

Additionally, FOX 4 News staff members have deep roots in the community, and are constantly bringing in story ideas from fellow parents, church members, sports teammates, neighbors, etc. For several years, FOX4 News has invited the public to express opinions via forums such as Viewers Voice, Tell it to Tim, and What’s Buggin You. Viewers’ comments are used both on the air and as a source of story ideas.

KDFW and KDFI employees, including on-air talent, participate on the boards or in community organizations, as follows:

IV. INTERNET

Myfoxdfw.com streams KDFW’s 8 a.m. and noon weekday newscasts. During significant news events, or storm coverage, extended coverage is also streamed. The website provides an ongoing stream of live Doppler radar. During significant news events or storm coverage, the website utilizes chat rooms in which users can watch coverage and share information. Periodically, chat rooms are hosted by experts, newsmakers and on-air talent. The blogging community is robust and on-air talent regularly blog to inform users about upcoming or current stories; sharing additional details about news items; relating personal experiences; message boards are utilized in the same manner. One message board is dedicated to updating programming information, such as schedule changes.

The WAP site (http://wap.myfoxdfw.com) allows users to utilize mobile devices to stay up-to-date on news and weather.

We have a genuine commitment to local journalism and covering local news. Our commitment includes assigning reporters to specific community-based beats. For nearly 30 years, INSIGHTS has addressed the issues and concerns of the community, particularly communities of color within our area. It is a fine blend of news, information and entertainment. Veterans Stand Down – A look at the plight of 26-million veterans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. At least 1/3 of them are alone and homeless.

Remembering Rosa Parks – The woman known as the Mother of the Civil Rights movement dies. Most people remember her because she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a White man. That incident sparked the Birmingham Bus Boycott.

Native American Heritage Month Celebration – Highlighted a program at the Fort Worth Public Library saluting Native American custom, culture and heritage.

Mortgage Scam – FOX 4 news Investigative reporter, Becky Oliver talks about her special report on what happens when homes go into foreclosure due to a real estate scam. 13 families lost their homes. The story turned into an FBI investigation.

Nigton – A long time issue comes to a head with a town vote in White Settlement. A tiny little town settled by former slaves in Northeast Trinity County was called Nigton. Many found the name offensive today. The vote was to not change the name.

St. Philip’s School – The Dallas Star Hockey team roasted owner, Don Hicks as a fundraiser for St. Philip’s School. St. Philips, also known as “The miracle on Pennsylvania Avenue”, is a South Dallas private school for severely underprivileged students. The students have excelled remarkably since the school opened its doors more than 10 years ago.

Gratitude - Just how important is it to be grateful? Discussion with gratitude consultant Lysa Rohan who says living in a state of gratitude is good for your health and for unblocking gifts that are yet to be experienced.

Diabetes – November is Diabetes Awareness Month. More than 20-million Americans are now diabetic. Sharon Cox, a dietitian with the Parkland Health and Hospital System and a supporter of the American Diabetes Association talks about the importance of diet in preventing and controlling diabetes.

Cooking for a Cause – Texas Ranger Dave Delucci cooks his blonde brownies as he promotes the Texas Rangers Cook Book which benefits Happy Hill Farms, a residential non-profit for children temporarily removed from their homes.

North Texas Food Bank - Because of the number of people who came to North Texas following Hurricane Katrina, the North Texas Food Bank is running short of food. A representative joined us to ask for donations.

Abstinence and Teens - Our host, Shaun Rabb, is very active in supporting abstinence for young people. He introduces a program by the Urban League of Greater Dallas which sends out this message to young people. Children as young as 10 years old have been cited for having sex and may of them have had sexually transmitted diseases.

Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation - Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams has an organization to help single moms. His mom and sister joined us to talk about how his sister, a single mom, was his inspiration for the organization, the women they have helped and how other moms can get assistance through the organization.

Toys for Tots - This segment of Insights was in support of the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve and the Toys for Tots program. FOX 4 is the television sponsor for the North Texas event.

Ice – A visit with Chinese artisans who are in the to carve the exhibit ICE at the Gaylord Texan resort in Grapevine, Texas. The project took nearly a month to design and open.

December 2005

World AIDS Day - December 1st was World AIDS Day a time to bring attention to the more than 40-million people suffering with the AIDS virus worldwide. In the United State more than 4-million people are affected.

Arthritis – FOX 4 Medical reporter, John Hammarley gives information about a popular arthritis drug, glucosamine and says it is not as great at working on arthritis pain as previously thought.

Immigration The big issue of the month was immigration. We addressed the issue on several Insights program prior to and following the march. The March in Dallas was the largest in the history of the city with estimates at nearly 1-million people. We will continue to monitor the issue and report to our viewers.

Prison Affairs Interview with Christene Howard, author of a new book, “Prison Affairs”. In it, she tells the story of her romantic relationship with a man who is incarcerated. The week following our story, Christene actually marries him by proxy. We discovered that there are many women who marry prisoners.

March Across Texas A group of civil rights leaders and ministers talk about the March Across Texas to call attention to a dangerous chemical problem in Beaumont, Texas. The March began in Irving Texas near Dallas at the Exxon Mobile headquarters and proceeded to Beaumont where Exxon is allegedly allowing chemicals to ruin the soil and health of residents in Beaumont.

Gordon Parks A video biography of the legendary African American photographer and filmmaker, Gordon Parks. Parks died at the age of 93. He is best known for his movie, “Shaft” and his civil rights documentation through his photography.

Earning by Learning 79

Story about a program which rewards young people with money for learning thus earning by learning.

Other interesting stories on the show during April included a look at the new senior high-rise, Pegasus, 29 year old, Abacus’s chef, Tres Wilcox who was nominated for the James Beard Award, a special appearance by the stars of “Secret Obsessions” our new telenovela, an interview with a woman who is author of “Scholarship Secrets” to help students locate scholarship money, a special report, “Meth Mom” by anchor Heather Hays and Sports anchor/reporter, Nita Wiggins special report from Germany about two NFL players who now play there.

Also, the week prior to Cinco de Mayo, we featured a special report on the ever popular, Anita Martinez Ballet Folklorico dance company.

May 2006

El Centro Sommelier Course – We got a great response and a nice “thank you” from Darryl Beeson the instructor of the course and El Centro. He signed up six people after our show. The purpose of the course was to help the city bring folks back downtown on Sundays and to offer people interested in wine a course which will certify them for a new career.

Mavs Mom – Wonderful story by Nita Wiggins about Dallas Mav’s Jason Terry’s mom. Despite lots of medical challenges this year, she is making every game.

Autism – Story about how to recognize the signs of autism in children followed by an interview with our own colleague, Rodney Kyle, who has an autistic son and about the Walk Now, an event to raise funds for autism research.

Amazing Disgrace – Our Memorial Day special report by Becky Oliver outlined the travesties suffered by veterans despite the fact that they have funds to help them do things like fix up their homes and buy things that will make their lives more comfortable. We followed with an on set interview about other services for vets.

May You Be Blessed – An incredible story about a woman who made an internet video of blessings and pictures and how it spread all over the world. More than one million people experienced it.

Other stories included an extended look at the issue of teen fight videos, the Tuskegee Airmen and the City of Dallas Graffiti Wipeout Day and a look at the work of the Fort Worth Black Chamber of Commerce.

Murdered Kids We dedicated our entire program to how parents cope when they have a child that is murdered. The focus was on a new organization in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex called Parents of Murdered Children. It is a local outreach program which is part of a larger national effort. We heard the stories of parents who were still suffering the loss and we talked with the founder of the organization about the counseling, financial and other assistance offered by POMC.

African Pastor A very moving account of Kenyan minister Pastor Mohammed Roba and his Wife, Phina, who had to flee Kenya to avoid religious persecution. Kenya is primarily Muslim and the Roba’s converted to Christianity. The problem is that they had to leave behind their then 4 year old daughter behind. Over the years they had to send money back to Kenya to ensure her safety while in hiding. Just this year, they were united with 9 year old Tabitha. She is now trying to learn how to live in this country with her parents and new little brother.

Father’s Day Special We dedicated the entire program to the examination of a father’s relationship with his daughter. Sometimes men do not realize that how they interact with their daughters early on will determine much of how she handles men and relationships in her life. We invited two women to join us. One had a very rough relationship with her father and her life was lacking for several things. The other was truly a daddys’ girl and that influenced who she looked for as a mate. Also, on the panel was Chris Powell, director of “Mantalk” a project at the Potters House in Dallas and the father of two teenage girls.

Child in Hot Car Texas summers can be brutally hot. After parking, the temperature in a car can zoom up to more than 100-degrees. Leaving a child in the car could be tragic. Reminder tips for parents and their children about cars this summer.

Soul Food Recipes Medical City Hospital in Dallas and the American Heart Association have teamed up to produce a cookbook of health soul food dishes. The book offers alternative ways of preparing some old favorites that are heart-healthy.

Airfare Watchdog.Com Interview with George Hobica, the creator of a new website which finds the cheapest airfare deals. It’s called Airfare Watchdog.Com Hobica teaches us how to find “free” fares as well as what he calls “fat finger” fares offered when the airline makes a mistake.

African American Fire Chief The City of Dallas hired its first African American Fire Chief. He is Chief Eddie Burns. He talked about his plans for the fire department and how our viewers could prevent fires in their homes with the winter months approaching.

Innocence Project Another Dallas man has been released from prison thanks to the Innocence Project. The Innocence Project began as a class project for a group of law students that reviewed law case that were questionable and the person went to prison.

Comedian Michael Richards set off a social fire bomb when he used the N word to reprimand some hecklers at his show t the Laugh Factory in . It set off national discussions about the use of the word. We featured a segment with Rev. Jesse Jackson who was in town to talk about it.

Diabetes Representatives from the North Texas Diabetes Association joined us to talk about the disease and a new cookbook with healthy recipes.

Toys for Tots We kick off the Toys for Tots Campaign spot by the US Marine Corp Reserve and FOX 4. Major Paul Courtaway and our FOX 4 sports anchor, Mike Doocy join us with all the details. Toys for Tots is the largest toy drive in the country.

Crossroads Community Center We featured an interview with this agency which intervenes when there is a need for food or help with utilities.

Child Support We interviewed Vanessa Diaz, Executive Director of the country’s largest child support collection agency, Support Kids. Custodial parents are usually in a financial bind this time of year trying to buy gifts for Christmas if the absent parent is behind on child support payments.

Black Images Book Bizarre One of Dallas’ oldest African American businesses is closing its doors….Black Images Book Bizarre. We talked to the owners about their contributions to the 84

community. They are closing due to competition from large box bookstores and internet book sales.

Organ Donation The news that former Dallas Cowboy, Everson Walls was going to donate a kidney to his friend and old playing mate, Ron Springs, was incredible. It opened the door to talk about organ donation among other subjects. Pam Silvestri from the Southwest Transplant Alliance joined us to talk about how easy it is to donate organs now, especially kidneys.

Stop Smoking This week on Insights we focus on the issue of smoking and how to quit. Representatives from the American Lung Association joined us to talk about the health risk, especially lung cancer that comes with smoking and about their programs for quitting.

Baby Moses Yet another baby has been abandoned. This time it was left outside a hospital. It is believed that the mother thought she was doing the right thing according to the Baby Moses Law, but she was not. Representatives from the Baby Moses Law joined us to clarify the law which calls for an arm-to-arm handoff.

Subway Hero We featured a story about a man being hailed the Subway hero, for jumping onto the tracks to rescue a young man as a subway passed over their bodies. Both survived.

Oprah’s School Our viewers saw a special report about Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. This school has long been her dream.

GPS Shoes Parents how would you like to know where your children are? A look at some new sneakers that are about to hit the market which include GPS technology.

You Decide: The 2008 Presidential Campaign By all accounts, 2008 is turning out to be one of the most interesting and historical presidential elections in many, many years. For the first time, a woman and an African American are serious contenders for the Presidency. We take a look at the campaign now that the candidates have survived the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primaries.

Joining us are representatives from the Dallas County Democratic and Republican parties as well as a representative from the Dallas League of Women 85

Voters. Another interesting segment was taped with our students who make up the FOX U team. These are SMU journalism students under the tutelage of FOX 4’s Scott Sayres who are presenting our viewers with a fresh, youthful perspective on the election.

North Texas Housing Market The housing market is top of mind for many people in North Texas. Many are trying to hold on to properties that they can no longer afford. Others are looking for affordable housing, period.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas Mark Todd, the VP of Education for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas joins us to talk about how to hold on to your home. North Texas Housing Coalition The North Texas Housing Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure affordable housing is available to all Texans. Next week they will host a Housing Summit in Dallas. Rock On! Rock On! There are nearly 200,000 inmates in the prison system in Texas. Many are repeat offenders because they do not access systems available to help get them on their feet. They do not become productive citizens once they are released. This week on Insights, we take a look at a special program for young offenders called 86

Rock On! Rock On! offers young troubled youth a second chance by getting education and special skills in the construction industry.

Texas Alliance for the Formerly Incarcerated Curtis Wilbert, aka Brother Curtis, will also be on hand to talk about his efforts to turn adult ex-offenders into dependable contributing citizens. Wilbert heads the Texas Alliance for the formerly incarcerated.

Reezon Closing the show this week is a hot new contemporary gospel group, “Reezon”. The 16 voice choir is from Fort Worth.

Don Imus, Shock Jock Fired We tackled the issues involved in the top story of the week. Syndicated radio DJ, Don Imus, calls the young ladies at Rutgers University some derogatory names. That incident raised much controversy in the country. Don Imus was fired from MSNBC and CBS, both networks which carry his show, after advertisers began to pull out. 87

We invited a panel of very interesting people to discuss the issue including Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist and vice president, Bob Ray Sanders, Myrtle Bell, PH.D who heads a diversity project at the University of Texas at Arlington and Kazi, a young man who has changed the lives of many young people with his Hip Hop project which will soon be seen on the big screen.

We talk about the issues of words and how they can affect a whole group of people despite the fact that they are directed at only one. Also, discussed was the role of “foul mouthed” rappers who tell their stories using terms which are derogatory to women and people many races.

Virginia Tech Massacre This week on Insights we examine the tragic shooting deaths of more than 30 people at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia. Could the shootings have been prevented? How can you protect your children…and yourself…from such tragedies? With tragedies like this coming directly into our homes via television, radio and even cell phones, how can we step back and heal? FBI Profiler, John Skilstad and family psychologist, Dr. Lawana Gladney join us for a discussion you won’t want to miss.

A program this summer based on a computation method from Taiwan encourages young people to learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide, quickly, by using their fingers. Representatives of the Innovative Urban Education Services will be on hand to talk about their 2007 Mental Math Institute June 4 – July 6 on the campus of Paul Quinn College. Students aged 6 – 15 are invited to attend.

UniverSoul Circus This is the only African American touring circus in the world and it’s coming to Dallas August 14-19 at the Southwest Center Mall. You’ll see amazing feats by top notch showmen and women, clowns, acrobats and, of course, the famous UniverSoul Elephants.

Moody Gardens Our friends from Moody Gardens in Galveston visit us with some of their animals. Moody Gardens is a family destination with its own beach that’s perfect for a family getaway.

Pastor Rudy Rasmus, founder of the St. John United Methodist Church in Houston explained why changing our behavior will help transform lives. He has authored a new book, “Touch: How Touch Transforms Lives”. Pastor Rasmus’ church began with 9 drug addicted members. Now he ministers to 9,000 members including the downtrodden and people of note. Also, he’ll talk about his new column in O Magazine and his project with pop singer Beyonce’, a member of his church, to get food to the poor.

Million Dad March This was a project to encourage African American Dads to take their children to school on the first day and to be involved in their educations throughout the year.

Attitude and Attire Attitudes and Attire, a non-profit organization which helps women to renew and get back into the workplace have added another module. It’s called Hopeful Smiles. Area dentists donate their time to repair teeth for A & A clients who are in need of dental work.

Caregiver This was a segment on how to be a good caregiver. Stats show that many baby boomers will find themselves caring for their families as well as their parents.

Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse is rampant. Dallas and Texas lead the country in the number of domestic abuse cases. Recently, the very public beating of television evangelist Juanita Bynum by her husband Bishop Thomas weeks drew even more attention to the problem. This week on Insights, we’ll tell you about a group of women who are battling domestic abuse from a different view…that of the church. They are some of the leading First Ladies of churches around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Their efforts support the Family Place. You’ll hear first hand the story of a woman who was mentally and physically abused even though the family was very involved in their church.

Support for the Jena 6 Thousands of people from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex went via buses to Jena, Louisiana to support six young African American Students who were charged with attempted murder following a fight with a white student. This event may be the civil rights issue of the year. Our host, Shaun Rabb will talk with Darryl Washington, the attorney for one of the young men, KHVN’s Robert Ashley of the Robert Ashley Show who is from Louisiana and University of North Texas Diversity expert, Cassandra Berry. They will discuss modern day racism and why our youth are at the forefront. Later, we talked with two women who are organizing buses to take supporters to Jena. They are Vickie Washington from St. Luke Community United Methodist Church and Ki-Afi Moya who is organizing a group through Texas Supports the Jena Six. 92

The American Federation of Teachers have launched a campaign to prevent school districts from teaching to the test, especially when it comes to the controversial TAKS test. Aimee Bolendar, president of the AFT says too much valuable teaching time is spent preparing students for this test.

Rev. Sheron Patterson Overcomes Breast Cancer Rev. Sheron Patterson has overcome her battle with breast cancer surviving a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. She joins us this morning because she has become an advocate for the Doris Daniely Outreach Breast Reconstruction Organization. This is an organization which make breast reconstruction available free of charge for underprivileged women. Carol Autry, the founder of the organization joined us as well.

Christmas In Cowtown The Fort Worth Junior League launched a holiday gift market “Christmas in Cowtown”, and KDFW is a sponsor. More than 125 merchants were featured. The proceeds benefit the many organizations supported by the Junior League. The event occurred October 4-6 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Ft. Worth.

NON-PROGRAMMING PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY

Communicating with the community is an ongoing mission for KDFW FOX 4. Contact with special interest groups is a regular part of our operation. FOX 4 News reaches out to community members with hundreds of personal appearances by staff members every year. News personnel speak with a wide variety of groups and organizations and frequently return with story ideas. In our newscasts and website we also solicit input, and constantly receive ideas and opinions from the community via phone, email and letters. In addition, every day field crews have personal contact with an enormous variety of people and organizations, ranging from law enforcement to medical personnel to education experts to every day people. Those contacts are a rich source of information and ideas.

Also, FOX 4 News staff members have deep roots in the community, and are constantly bringing in story ideas from fellow parents, church members, sports teammates, neighbors, etc.

In addition, for several years FOX4 News has invited the public to express opinions via forums including Viewers Voice, Tell It To Tim, and What’s Buggin You. Comments viewers call or send it are used both on the air and as a source of story ideas.

MLK Birthday In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday, we spoke with representatives from the Dallas Dinner Table. That is an event which brings together people of all races for a casual conversation over dinner. 98

Residents around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex opened their homes for this event.

Baby Moses Law Following a big news story about a young woman who gave birth to a baby in a hospital bathroom and left the baby in the trash, we contacted several organizations that work with the Baby Moses Law. We featured a segment on Insights to remind women, and men, that a baby can be given over to authorities without question, but it has to be hand to hand, not left in a bathroom.

7th Annual Biennial African American Legislative Summit Representative from State Senator Royce West’s Office called to ask us to help them get the word out about this event. At the summit, issues of importance, particularly to , will be discussed.

Mayor’s Summer Reading Program We worked with representatives of the Dallas Public Library and the City of Dallas Mayor’s office to talk about how we could help them with the Mayor’s Summer Reading program. We became the first television sponsor for the project and boosted summer readership among young people tremendously. More than 3,600 readers participated reading nearly 150,000 hours by the end of the summer.

Korean New Year Dr. Jay Zo spoke with us about customs and tradition in the Korean Family as they greet the New Year. He agreed to a segment of Insights that featured special Korean dishes and what they mean and cultural dancers who performed a tradition Korean Dance.

14th Annual Trumpet Awards We attended this event in Las Vegas, Nevada that salutes African American achievement.

Star Spangled Fourth 2006 We began our conversations with the City of Garland about this year’s Star Spangled Fourth. Downtown Garland was undergoing renovations. So, the event would have to be relocated. The City was concerned about our support since their event was not as big, (with concerts and ), as in years past. We understood that the arrangement was temporary and continued our support. 99

Red Hot and Snazzy United Negro College Fund Fundraiser. Anchor Clarice Tinsley participated in the event.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s Women’s Advisory Board Meeting We attended her annual women’s advisory meeting. This year she talked about Iraq, how FEMA botched the hurricane efforts on the Gulf coast, and about federal funds to education and the Medicare prescription drug program that are available in North Texas.

Caregiving We emceed a special program about care giving at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas. We invited Cynthia Salzman-Mondale, a filmmaker who produced a film about her father who had Alzheimer’s to join me for a segment of Insights to promote the event.

Earning By Learning We were approached by this organization to help them get the word out that they would reward students with money for learning. We supported with Insights and a story which aired on News about how the program is funded and how it works.

Big Steps to De Feet Cancer We aired a special story about this project of Dallas Maverick Dirk Nowitzki to help raise money for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

Faith Summit and Job Fair The Friendship West Baptist Church sought our assistance in promoting their job fair. We did with our community bulletin board and Insights.

Free Prom Dress Each year FOX 4 supports the Free Prom Dress Giveaway on Insights and on our community calendar. The project offers less privilege young ladies free gowns for prom.

Children’s Cancer Fund Luncheon Anchors Clarice Tinsley and Steve Eagar serve as emcees for the event and several other of our personalities escort the children during the fashion show.

Girls, Incorporated We talked with Ruth Thomas and some of the girls from Girls, Incorporated about their upcoming fundraiser luncheon and their goals for the coming year.

The Texas Land Board We had a conversation with a representative of the Texas Veterans’ Land board. They call each year to update us on their services available to vets.

El Centro Community College – I met with a professor at El Centro Community College about a new “trade” course that the school would begin offering. It is a certified course to train sommeliers. There is a shortage of these wine experts, especially among women. We followed with a recruitment segment on our public affairs program, “Insights”.

Autism One of our own employees, engineer Rodney Kyle, has an autistic child. He is very active in the organization Autism Now. We talked about an upcoming fundraiser Walk Now and supported Rodney with segments on Insights and news.

Graffiti Wipeout Day City Councilwoman, Angela Hunt called about her efforts to remove graffiti around the city of Dallas. The weekend project was called Graffiti Wipeout Day. We supported her with coverage on our public affairs program and news.

Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce Chamber president, Dee Jennings and his wife and head of the auxiliary, Gwen Barbee came to the station to discuss the many projects that the chamber is involved in including scholarship programs, mentoring for small businesses and other projects. They made an appearance on Insights.

Father-Daughter Panel In honor of Father’s Day, we were invited to participate in a panel at the Potter’s House Church in Dallas about a woman’s relationship with her father. The audience was all male. Some were estranged from their daughters. Others wanted to know how to make their relationship with their daughters more meaningful. 101

Susan G. Komen Foundation We attended the board meeting of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to discuss the 2006 Race for the Cure. We adopted this organization for a year round sponsorship.

Through the Eyes of Children We worked with the Dallas Independent School District on this project to promote photography among less fortunate students. The students shot photos capturing images that were important to them in their communities. Those photos appeared in exhibits at the African American Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art. We supported with produced promos and our public affairs program.

State Fair of Texas/Sustainable Skylines Texas boasts the largest state fair in the country. We met with officials of the Fair to find out if there was some way we could help while maximizing our presence there. We creatively decided to do a green scavenger hunt in conjunction with the City of Dallas and its Sustainable Skylines project.

Terminal B Celebration We invited our Media Partner interns to get a taste of community outreach by joining me for the celebration of Terminal B at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport. What they learned is that events like this are great networkers and that you do indeed pick up information and stories that can be of value to the station.

Sudan Basketball Our sports anchor/reporter set up a meeting for me with Deng Bol, a Dallas Maverick basketball player. Bol has a special program to help recruit players from his native Sudan. There is lots of poverty there and if basketball teams would look to the Sudan to recruit players many of the young men, all very tall, could dig their way out of poverty as he did.

US Marine Corp Toys for Tots Campaign 2006 We picked up our talks with the Marines as we get closer to launching this year’s campaign as the television partner. The campaign launches Thanksgiving weekend.

In an effort to extend our community outreach “west of the Trinity River” into Tarrant County, we approached the Junior League of Fort Worth and offered to be the Media Sponsor of one of the largest events in Fort Worth, “Mayfest”. We had several good conversations on community service and became their sponsor, supporting the event on-air with new coverage and promotion. Several station employees also volunteered at the event. 103

Komen Race for the Cure – Dallas This is one of the station’s biggest sponsorships and it benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

Komen for the Cure – Sisters Network We met with members of this branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation which is a support group for women of color. Also, we produced a segment with them for Insights as we promoted the Race for the Cure.

Toys for Tots We continued our meetings with the USMC Reserve as we planned the Toys for Tots campaign for this year.

Plano Community Forum Rochelle Brown emceed the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Plano Community Forum. The PCF is a primarily African American non-profit group which raises funds for a number of social and civic non-profit organizations in Plano.

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Rochelle Brown moderated a panel during the national meeting of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and taped a segment for Insights.

US Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots We continued our regular meetings with the USMC Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign which kicked off Thanksgiving weekend. News and Insights produced many stories leading up to the event. One which was most touching came through our station relationship with Girls, Inc. A young teenage girl wished simply for windows for her home. She and her mother get really, really cold during the winter because of broken and loose windows. Toys for Tots ends mid-December. The 2006 campaign netted more than 180,000 toys for more than 90,000 families.

Crossroads Community Center We received a call one day from a man who wanted to help pay utility bills of needy families during the winter. He was with the Crossroads Community Center. Since that call and an Insights appearance, we have received hundreds of calls and hundreds of people have taken advantage of the services there. 104

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society We met with Sarah Bayley and company from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society about their fundraising luncheon in January to inquire about how we can help them. Our anchor, Clarice Tinsley emceed the event and we produced spots to support it. Later, we met with another member of that organization about a NASCAR/Texas Motor Speedway event coming up in September 2006.

S.M. Wright Foundation Both News and Insights delivered information on the local S.M. Wright Foundation which offers assistance with food for the poor.

MLK Parade We supported the Elite News MLK Parade celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with mentions on air and on our community calendar.

Mi Escuelita Food Project Supported this Headstart program for pre-schoolers who speak Spanish only. Anchor Baron James participated in a fundraiser for the school. We later produced stories and ran the organization’s info on our community calendar.

Other Organizations we supported with on air mentions and our community calendar are: 5th Annual 2007 “Partners for Kids” Luncheon, The Crow Collection of Asian Art Celebrating Chinese New Year, Crossroads Community Center, The Samaritan Inn, and a shelter for the homeless, Dallas Black Dance theater.

National Black Aids Awareness Day February 7th was Black Aids Day. It is a day of awareness for this disease. Since 1981 AIDS has killed more than 20 million people. African Americans account for 40% of those deaths.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington Luncheon Event featured American Idol star Ruben Studdard. We served as the media sponsor with spot supporting the event, Insights and News.

Amachi Program of the Big Brother Big Sister organization Insights and News supported this program which mentors young children whose parents have been incarcerated. 105

Craig Watkins Makes History Attorney Craig Watkins becomes Dallas County’s first African American District Attorney. In honor of Black History Month we profile his life.

Links Incorporated This 50 year old organization sponsors the Ebony Fashion Show each year. We were asked to support the event with guests on Insights.

Cheese The Cheese drug problem was sweeping North Texas. We teamed with the Partnership for a drug free America and Dallas County Drug and Alcohol organization to produce a spot to encourage kids not to do the deadly drug. The state of Texas was impressed with our work and bought airtime so that the spot could be aired statewide.

Other organizations supported through our on air community calendar include: The long Road Home Program Mobile Housing Assistance Program for families who want to return to Louisiana following the deadly Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Contact Crisis Line’s 40th Anniversary celebration, The MS Walk and Run for Hope, 2nd Annual Coach William Toles/Jordan CDC Charity Golf Tournament, Women’s Business Council Southwest Round-Up and tax help info from the American Association of Retired Persons.

Women’s Business Council Southwest Rochelle Brown emceed this annual event known as Round-Up. It is a day of networking and making deals for female business owners.

Remembering Mom Foundation Remembering Mom is an organization designed to help those who have lost their parents through the grief process. We supported with a community calendar entry about their upcoming luncheon and an interview on Insights.

Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation FOX 4 was named the media sponsor for this organization started by Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams. The organization support single moms. We 106

were invited to join the board of the organization. We featured several time on Insights and Good Day. We sponsored the Golf tournament June 18th.

Mayors Summer Reading Program We kicked off the 2007 program. Anchor Baron James and Rochelle Brown were very instrumental in getting out meeting with the children.

The Black Academy of Arts and Letters We helped this arts organization celebrate 23 years in Dallas to help young people sharpen their creative talents. Rochelle Brown served on an advisory board to help launch the celebration show.

New Garland Mayor The City of Garland gets its first African American mayor, Ronald Johnson. KDFW’s has known Johnson for many years through the station’s work with Star Spangled Fourth, a summer event sponsored by FOX 4. We featured him on Insights.

Hispanic Health Issues Diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease is reaching epidemic proportions in the Hispanic community. We joined with the American Heart Association to urge everyone to come to their health fair.

Shoes for My Children We supported this organization and Rev. Bernita Tyler as she collects new shows for children in a back to school drive. We featured her on Insights and our community calendar.

Million Dad March Insights host Shaun Rabb discovered this story. It is a march to encourage African American Dads to take their children to school on the first day and be involved in their educations throughout the year. Insights and News coverage.

Attitudes and Attire, a non-profit organization which gets women ready to enter the workplace have added another dimension – dental work. Dentists throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex offer free dental to their clients who cannot afford it.

Pit Bull Attacks This began as a news story that really moved me because so many children were being injured and killed by these dogs. I pulled together a panel of breeders, shelter representatives and a mother who had just lost a child to discuss what can be done about the issue.

2008 U COUNT In association with People’s Empowerment Project, conducted contest for elementary and high schools across Dallas to create commercials encouraging people to vote. Received 20 different submissions, airing on-air and on the FOX 4 website, myfoxdfw.com.
