Local Newscasts: KDFW FOX 4 schedules and airs more local news than any other television station in the State of Texas at 43 hours of original news content each week, as follows: Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. Monday – Friday: Noon – 12: 30 p.m. Monday – Friday: 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Friday: 9 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Saturday: 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 9 p.m. – 10 p.m. Sunday: 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday Sports News: 10 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. b. Breaking News: KDFW FOX 4’s local news provides community service through consumer affairs pieces, severe weather updates, news investigations, and regular series pieces. A complete list of cut-ins and crawls is attached as Exhibit 1. c. Local News: The station is committed to local journalism and covering local news. This includes the assignment of reporters to specific community-based beats. This includes neighborhood issues, local political candidates and topics, stories important to the different minority communities and groups and organizations working in the various communities. The news staff primarily works from the main office in downtown Dallas. They also work from bureaus in Fort Worth (Tarrant Co.) and Carrollton (Denton – Collin Co.). KDFW employs a diverse staff of reporters and producers to better cover the many different facets of this large market. There are many stories aired that have had significant impact on the local community. Among the listings below include live coverage of North Texas floods from the KDFW helicopter, where helicopter personnel assisted emergency rescue teams in spotting and rescuing flood victims as the waters rose; other local stories produced in studio include: 2 i. Major news stories broadcast in the report period included: • Hurricane Katrina evacuees face eviction from local apartment complex. Management backs off and blames miscommunication after FOX 4 investigates • FOX 4 exclusive about teenage gang members using runaway girls for prostitution • Dallas Police Chief admits mistakes were made in botched drug raid that led to release of three suspects • Fox 4 lists communities at risk during dry, windy conditions that could lead to extreme fire danger • FOX 4 investigation exposes major retailer selling fake gemstones as “authentic” jewelry ii. Coverage of local news stories included: • Viewers’ Voice, a weekly forum for viewer feedback to high-profile stories, including topics such as Rep. Tom Delay’s trial dispute and school bus safety. • What’s Buggin You, a weekly consumer segment, including issues such as driver complaints leading to repairs to Fort Worth road. • FOX 4 lists locations in Plano where city plans to install red light cameras. • Report about coping with rising utility costs for low- or fixed-income tenants • Consumer alert about flammable Halloween costumes • Apology by students for racially insensitive school signs, and pledge by school to screen signs more aggressively • Profile of local website where users post discount deals for others to save money • Investigation of workers’ compensation dispute, where an employee claimed a job-related chemical made him sick iii. Many news stories aired were of particular importance to minority, disabled and other special interest groups in North Texas, including: • Community reaction to a yard sign urging whites to vote • Plea from homeless advocates for proposition support to fund 24/7 homeless assistance center • Religious rights group files complaint with local high school accused of infringing upon the beliefs of Muslim students • Reaction to passage of statewide proposition banning gay marriage • Follow-up with obese woman who underwent lap band surgery six months earlier and lost 50 pounds 3 • Dallas County Sheriff’s Office investigates claims of racial profiling involving Hispanic DWI suspects • Interview of Dallas teacher who staged a hunger strike to protest the “N” word • Signal crossing for sight impaired is broken at intersection next to the area’s largest employer of blind people A comprehensive list of local news stories is attached as Exhibit 2. d. Public Affairs Programming: KDFW FOX 4 is home to Insights, the oldest public affairs show in Dallas-Fort Worth. The weekly show (aired on Sundays at 8 a.m.) is a blend of news, information and entertainment, addressing issues and concerns of the community, particularly communities of color. Following are examples of stories covered over the past two years: • Veterans Stand Down – A look at the plight of 26-million veterans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. At least 1/3 of them are alone and homeless • Remembering Rosa Parks – The woman known as the Mother of the Civil Rights movement dies. Most people remember her because she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a White man. That incident sparked the Birmingham Bus Boycott • Native American Heritage Month Celebration – Highlighted a program at the Fort Worth Public Library saluting Native American custom, culture and heritage • Diabetes – November is Diabetes Awareness Month. More than 20-million Americans are now diabetic. Sharon Cox, a dietitian with the Parkland Health and Hospital System and a supporter of the American Diabetes Association talks about the importance of diet in preventing and controlling diabetes A comprehensive list of topics aired in Insights is attached as Exhibit 3. f. Of Metro Dallas • Habitat for Humanity • Internet Safety • TV Ratings • United Negro College Fund • Mentoring In the June 11-24, 2007 report period, KDFW aired 22 minutes, 25 seconds in PSAs on the following subjects: • Anti-Drug abuse (Cheese Heroin) • Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas • Boy Scouts of America • Fire Prevention • TV Ratings • Texas Department of Transportation In the same report period, KDFI aired 3 hours, 3 minutes and 10 seconds of PSAs in support of: • Booster seats • Partnership for Drug Free America 5 • Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas • Habitat for Humanity • Internet Safety • TV ratings • United Negro College Fund • US Marines • Greater Dallas Council on Drugs/alcohol (Cheese Heroin) In response to the growing drug crisis among teenagers involving a deadly type of heroin called “cheese,” FOX 4 partnered with the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse to produce an anti-drug PSA featuring local high school students. The PSI campaign received wide acclaim and was aired on Spanish language stations across the state. FOX 4 received a special award for the initiative from the Greater Dallas Council, and the Texas Attorney General announced plans to take the campaign statewide. III. PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY Communicating with the community is an ongoing mission for KDFW FOX 4. Contact with special interest groups is a regular part of the station’s operation. FOX 4 News reaches out to community members with hundreds of personal appearances by staff members every year. News personnel speak with a wide variety of groups and organizations and frequently return with story ideas. Input is solicited in KDFW’s newscasts and website, and ideas and opinions are sought from the community via telephone, email and letters. In addition, field crews have daily contact with members of the community and organizations, a rich source of information and ideas for future programming. Additionally, FOX 4 News staff members have deep roots in the community, and are constantly bringing in story ideas from fellow parents, church members, sports teammates, neighbors, etc. For several years, FOX4 News has invited the public to express opinions via forums such as Viewers Voice, Tell it to Tim, and What’s Buggin You. Viewers’ comments are used both on the air and as a source of story ideas.
