Information & Resources for Groups Organisers Coach Drivers’ Map and Guide launched for the Lake District, Cumbria Group travel organisers planning a visit to the Lake District, Cumbria now have better access to information including a new bite size guide for coach drivers. Produced by the £6.9million GoLakesTravel programme in conjunction with Cumbria County Council, it’s part of a wider push to reduce carbon emissions and safeguard the environment by influencing people to make fewer car journeys while visiting the region. The refreshed Coach Drivers’ Map and Guide provides essential information to coach operators, from details on coach parking and public toilets across the county, to advice on roads to avoid (due to sharp bends, steep gradients or restricted width). Alongside the handy new guide, GoLakesTravel has re-launched a dedicated website www.cumbria4coaches.co.uk, to bring together all the basic information that group travel organisers need to inspire a diverse range of themed visits – including arts and culture, history and heritage, food and drink, and the great outdoors. Providing a free group accommodation booking service, discounted attraction ticketing for groups, a booking service for Blue/Green Badge Official Walking tour guides, itinerary ideas, together with help and advice on planning group visits, the Group Travel Desk will make planning visits to Oxford and Oxfordshire a smooth and seamless procedure. The new group’s pages on the Visit Oxfordshire website are an essential tool for anyone planning a group/educational visit – or group visit programme in Oxford and Oxfordshire. Specific pages of the popular website are dedicated to group-friendly attractions, travel, accommodation and support services as part of the Group Visits Promotion campaign. The aim is both to attract new groups and to encourage repeat visits to less well-known parts of the county. New Attractions/Tours/Offers for Groups Honister Slate Mine, Lake District, Cumbria Honister Slate Mine is launching a new package for groups wanting to take a unique excursion into the subterranean world, with a guided tour of England’s oldest working slate mine deep inside an iconic Lake District mountain. The 900 year old mine wends its way through 11 miles of tunnels, taking in narrow passages and incredible cathedral-like caverns along the way. Lasting around 1.5 hours, mine tours are available seven days a week, including the ‘Kimberley’ tour, which is virtually all on the flat and suitable for all ages, or for the more adventurous, the classic ‘Honister’ tour is ideal. The ride includes a complimentary hand held multi-media tour for visitors to find out more about how the tower was built and to discover the fascinating heritage of Brighton and Sussex. To mark the occasion, Portsmouth’s National Museum of the Royal Navy is launching a new “three ship” ticket especially for the groups market including M33, Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and Second World War-era submarine HMS Alliance. The ticket offers a journey through 150 years of sea warfare from HMS Victory, which led the British fleet to triumph at the Battle of Trafalgar to the underwater intrigue of submariners during the Second World War. HMS Victory remains a real favourite with groups, who can go aboard the ship. Alongside HMS Victory in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is M33, a coastal bombardment ‘Monitor’ of 568 tons. Submarine HMS Alliance was reopened to visitors during 2014 after a £7 million refit. She is presented as if about to leave for sea, focussing on her service during the 1940s to the 1970s and paints a highly evocative picture of life under the sea. Group tickets for the “three ships” ticket include at least 20% off standard rates and the price for adults for all three ships is £19. Recommended visit time is between 4 – 6 hours and there is a seasonal waterbus connection across Portsmouth Harbour between April until the end October 7 days a week.
