Pilot Season by Kelly Cousineau An undergraduate honorsrequirements thesis submitted for the degree in partial of fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts in University Honors and Film Thesis Adviser William Tate Portland State University 2014 Abstract In the 1930s, two historical figures pioneered the cinematic movement into color technology and theory: Technicolor CEO Herbert Kalmus and Color Director Natalie Kalmus. Through strict licensing policies and creative branding, the husband-and-wife duo led Technicolor in the aesthetic revolution of colorizing Hollywood. However, Technicolor's enormous success, beginning in 1938 with The Wizard of Oz, followed decades of duress on the company. Studios had been reluctant to adopt color due to its high costs and Natalie's commanding presence on set represented a threat to those within the industry who demanded creative license. The discrimination that Natalie faced, while undoubtedly linked to her gender, was more systemically linked to her symbolic representation of Technicolor itself and its transformation of the industry from one based on black-and-white photography to a highly sanctioned world of color photography. -

https://archive.org/details/bigpicturemoneyp00epst/page/14 So there’s not a whole lot on the notes front for this episode because I didn’t have a ton of time to write anything out but I have been reading through Wikipedia pages for a couple days and wrote a little bit. This one is going to be about the history of Hollywood or, more specifically, the history of major motion picture production companies. Also just for the record, or more just to tell you, for the vinyl episode and my future episode about the music industry Ehtisham and I alluded to I kind of set up the background information and then I’m going to bring it forward into today, but with this episode and its future companion episode I intend to do the opposite. In the film industry there is what are known as ‘The Big 5’ companies, (for the record depending on who you ask and what time period you are working in this could be the Big 4-6 so it gets tricky) these are the ones that produce an absolutely massive amount of the media we consume. According to Wikipedia this means companies that make 80-85% of the box office revenue made in the country. This concept is not too recent however, as the Big 5 as we know them today are the second iteration of the group. The original Big 5 were: MGM, Paramount, Fox, Warner Bros., and RKO. The current Big 5 are: Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney, and Columbia. I plan on just kinda going through the old Big 5 and then the new Big 5 one by one, following their beginning and rise and/or demise. -

Hollywood, soon to become the United States’ national film industry, was founded in the early teens by a group of film companies which came to Los Angeles at first to escape the winter conditions of their New York- and Chicago-based production locations. However, the advantages of production in southern California—particularly the varied landscapes in the region crucial for exterior, on-location photography—soon made Hollywood the dominant film production center in the country.i Hollywood, of course, is not synonymous with filmmaking in the United States. Before the early 1910s, American filmmaking was mostly New York-based, and specialized in the production of short films (circa 1909, a one-reel short, or approximately 10 minutes). At the time, French film companies dominated global film distribution, and it was more likely that one would see a French film in the United States than an American-produced one. -

The Harris Survey For Release: Thursday, September 12, 1974 POPULARITY OF TENNIS GAINING AS SPECTATOR SPORT By Louis Harris Although football remains the most widely followed game among the nation's sports fans, tennis is moving up rapidly as a spectator sport. The Harris Sports Survey finds that the number who say they "follow" tennis has risen fron 17 to 26 percent just in the last year, by far the most dramatic change in American sports preferences. Horse racing was the only other activity to show a gain, with 20 percent of all sports fans now saying they follow the horses compared to 18 percent a year ago. Recently, the Harris Sports Survey asked a special national cross section of 1,384 sports fans: "Which of these sports do you follow?" (HAND RESPO!:DENT CARD) SPORTS FOLLOWED BY FANS Football Baseball Basketball Tennis Auto racing Go1f Bowling Horse racing Boxing Track and field Hockey Boating The biggest and most spectacular rise in recent years has been registered by tennis, which has moved from last place in 1971 up to 4th in the 1974 standings of spectator interest. The three main reasons for this surge in tennis popularity can be traced to: 1) A sizable increase in the nunber of persons who are playing the sport themselves these days; 2) Much wider television and press coverage of tennis matches on a regular basis; and 3) The energence of young, attractive superstars such as Chris Evert, Jim:y Connors, and Bjorn Borg. 1 3 5 Th e e lo B fir M And the Origins of Entertainment Law Practice in Los Angeles, 1908–1940 m o lly SelV i n * I � Introduction he story of how Edwin Loeb got his start as an entertainment lawyer, T like many tales told of the studio moguls who became his clients and poker partners, has multiple versions. One account pins Edwin’s first entertainment client as “Colonel” William N. Selig, an ex-sideshow operator who turned to slapstick comedies, min- strel-themed shows and westerns. In 1890, Selig moved his operation from Chicago to what became the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and began making movies, often featuring his growing collection of exotic ani- mals. According to a former Loeb & Loeb partner, Selig retained Edwin in 1914 or 1915 to resolve some of his legal problems after meeting him at * Research Fellow, Stanford Law School. Examining the Relationship Between Environmental Uncertainty and Quality Management Orientation
Sports operations management: Examining the relationship between environmental uncertainty and quality management orientation Abstract Research question: The outcome of a sporting competition is uncertain and one of the key reasons for the sustained popularity of spectator sport. Whilst unique and exciting, this context poses challenges for the management of the sporting experience as there is no control over the outcome of the competition; a disappointing result on-field may translate to a disappointing overall experience for the spectators. We wish to understand if and how quality management practices are used in off-field operations to mitigate on-field uncertainty, and thus have greater control over spectator perception of the sporting experience. Research methods: A multi-country survey of operations managers of sporting stadia in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand was conducted. We operationalize environmental uncertainty as spectator co-creation and enforced collaboration, and assess quality management orientation from both a customer and process perspective. Linear regression is used for data analysis. Results and Findings: Surprisingly, we find that environmental uncertainty does not encourage the orientation of quality management practices towards the customer. Instead, we find a greater application of process focus. In considering sporting fans as passive customers rather than active co-creators of value, quality management practices seem to have skewed towards process rather than person. 1 Implications: Customer satisfaction appears as secondary to process performance in the sample of stadia examined. This is in contrast to studies that have encouraged a focus on the customer in contexts of environmental uncertainty. We suggest a renewed focus on the customer for the longevity of sporting stadia. -

Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.
