Mount Rushmore: The Rise of Talk Radio and Its Impact on Politics and Public Policy Brian Asher Rosenwald Wynnewood, PA Master of Arts, University of Virginia, 2009 Bachelor of Arts, University of Pennsylvania, 2006 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Virginia August, 2015 !1 © Copyright 2015 by Brian Asher Rosenwald All Rights Reserved August 2015 !2 Acknowledgements I am deeply indebted to the many people without whom this project would not have been possible. First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. I have been fortunate enough to receive fellowships from the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, which made it far easier to complete this dissertation. I am grateful to be a part of the Fox family, both because of the great work that the program does, but also because of the terrific people who work at Fox.

Community Renegades: Micro-radio and the Unlicensed Radio Movement LAWRENCE C. SOLEY When police beat Dewayne Readus during a 1983 scuffle at the John Hay Homes housing project in Springfield, Illinois, they were no more aware that their actions would lead to a large-scale revolt than were the Los Angeles cops who beat Rodney King eight years later. Unlike the revolt in Los Angeles, the one that started in Springfield was nonviolent, invisible, and international. It triggered the micro-radio revolt of the 1990s-an explosion of unlicensed, low-power radio stations that originated in, and broadcast to, neighborhoods across the United States and across the globe. Dewayne Readus grew up in the John Hay Homes public housing project, a 600-unit complex of low-rise apartments for low-income families a short distance from President Abraham Lincoln's historic home. In the 1980s, the project was home to approximately 3,000 people, the vast majority of whom were African American. No commercial broadcasting stations were directed to Springfield's 15,000 African Americans, most of whom lived within a one-and-a-half-mile radius of the John Hay project.

Case 6:10-cv-01280-JTM Document 75 Filed 12/22/11 Page 1 of 31 IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF KANSAS Steve C. Barnes, Plaintiff, vs. Case No. 10-1280-JTM Cessna Aircraft Co., Defendant. MEMORANDUM AND ORDER Plaintiff Steve Barnes was terminated from his employment at Cessna Aircraft Company after he failed to successfully complete an employee performance improvement program. Barnes has brought the present action alleging that Cessna discriminated against him under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e and the Kansas Act Against Discrimination, and that it retaliated against him after he brought administrative complaints against Cessna. Because Barnes has failed to present a prima facie case of discrimination or retaliation, because Cessna has established legitimate reasons for its actions, and because Barnes has failed to show that these reasons are a pretext for unlawful action, the court grants Cessna’s Motion for Summary Judgment. Summary judgment is proper where the pleadings, depositions, answers to interrogatories, and admissions on file, together with affidavits, if any, show there is no genuine issue as to any material fact, and that the moving party is entitled to judgment as a matter of law. Fed.R.Civ.P. 56(c). In considering a motion for summary judgment, the court must examine all evidence in a light most favorable to the opposing party. McKenzie v. Mercy Hospital, 854 F.2d 365, 367 (10th Cir. 1988). The party moving for summary Case 6:10-cv-01280-JTM Document 75 Filed 12/22/11 Page 2 of 31 judgment must demonstrate its entitlement to summary judgment beyond a reasonable doubt.

  • Sheigra Dxpedition Log 1985-2020
SHEIGRA DXPEDITION LOG 1985-2020 A compilation of mediumwave logs from Sheigra DXpeditions Part 1: The Americas Sheigra DXpedition Log This is a compilation of logs from past Sheigra DXpeditions for stations heard in the Americas (a separate compilation has been made for those stations heard in Africa, Asia and the Pacific). Sheigra is a small crofting village in the North West Scottish Highlands. The A838 makes its way to Rhiconich where the B801 branches off to Kinlochbervie. To arrive the traveller must pass through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The Scottish Highlands are a vast and unique place. At the head of Loch Inchard, the side road follows the northern shore to the fishing port of Kinlochbervie, four miles northwest of Rhiconich. Beautifully situated, the B801, both single and double tack, is the narrow winding road leading north-westwards from Rhiconich with splendid views towards the lonely mountain Reay Forest, dominated by Foinaven and heads west to Kinlochbervie. Through the crofting townships of Achriesgill, Inshegra, Badcall Inchard and Oldshoremore to Blairmore and Balchrick, the road continues for some four miles towards the open sea with fine views, and ends beyond Balchrick at Sheigra, the last habitation on the west coast and a small hamlet of the western coastline. The first visit to the area took place in 1979, when Dave Kenny, Chris Greenway and James Hobson ventured north for a mini-DXpedition based in nearby Oldshoremore, just a short distance away from Sheigra. The first DXpedition to Sheigra itself took place in October 1985 with Mark Hattam, John Faulkner, Ian Kelly and David Hyams travelling north to Sutherland, whilst the latest was in October 2020 with Dave Kenny and Alan Pennington.

Holland Cooke Newsletter ● May ‘15 2015 Holland Cooke. Unauthorized duplication is strictly prohibited. All rights reserved. “Radio has more listeners now than ever before.” NAB CEO/President Gordon Smith Last month’s NAB Show was its biggest since 9/11. 103,000+ attendees from 159 countries came to fabulous Las Vegas. Radio people think of this event as a TV convention, but it’s more. Appropriate to how people now consume and advertisers now support media, the big April show is less-and-less just a broadcasting event. Sure, there’s TV hardware aplenty, and even before the FAA greenlights commercial use in the USA, drones-as-a-newsgathering-tool were prominent. But, as last year, the show’s theme was “Bringing Content to Life.” And speakers striding-on-stage spoke of “content creators sharing all media industry delivery platforms” and “the pace and magnitude of change.” Co-located: NMX, as in “New Media Expo,” formerly “Blogworld,” previously “Podcast & New Media Expo,” of which you’ve read my Talkers coverage as the event evolved these past dozen years. “More people have listened to ‘Serial’ than have watched ‘Mad Men.’” Tom Webster, Edison Research, speaking at NMX “You can’t monetize the Internet.” Mel Karmazin, in the 1990s, recalled by Tom Leykis who worked for him at the time. When the RAIN Summit West audience finished howling, Tom told ‘em that he recently sold-out a LA comedy club “at $75 a head, THREE TIMES the usual ticket price, to watch 15 of my callers perform.” The RAIN convo was day-before-NAB.
