The Bob Cats Newsletter 2021-06-18 THE BOB CATS NEWSLETTER JUNE 18, 2021. CELEBRATING THE ART AND THE MANY LIVES OF BOB DYLAN • NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE SONG & DANCE MAN. INSPIRED BY THEME TIME RADIO HOUR AND THE SPIRIT IN WHICH IT WAS MADE. ESTABLISHED 2006 BY PETER HOLST • 14 YEARS AND RUNNING. HTTPS://THEBOBCATSNEWSLETTER.WORDPRESS.COM Welcome to another edition of the Bob Cats Newsletter. It's night time in the big city and the town board in the Town Hall has been in congress since the early morning hours. The Cossack Party has been filibustering since noon regarding the parking meters outside the Church of Mary and the Lamb, the Libertines have filed a multiple of protests that has been protested against by the Christian Knights and the Blue Collars and the White Collars has reopened reclamations thrice already. The room is hot and sweaty, tobacco smoke sneaking in thru the wide-open swing-doors where Town Hall employees and senior citizens stare like dogs looking at a card trick. Outside, a streetcar named Waldorf comes to a complete stop, letting of a motley crew of writers and critics from all over the countryside. Cracked actor Cornwell in a blue Camarillo State Mental Hospital t-shirt and chinos and the kid in a second hand, red bell-boy suit shooting crap in the black and white marble floored hallway of the city parliament. The kid’s on a winning streak as the chairman of the board is carried out, in tatters and tears, on a stretcher by the night nurse, in a dust coat smoking a Macanudo Café cigarillo, and doctor Robert with his shirt untucked and his fake Borsalino askew. Outside an ambulance awaits, Joey the driver cuts the siren off and on just for kicks, it’s his last day on the job. The speaker’s chair has caught fire and the fire brigade’s on its way, something’s wrong with the fire engine siren, there’s a boogie woogie bugle boy atop the ladder truck blowing Salt Peanuts, Dizzie Gillespie style with heart and soul and everything is in the news. • Tell-Tale Signs - Edgar Allan Poe and Bob Dylan: Towards a Model of Intertextuality
ATLANTIS. Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 31.2 (December 2009): 41–56 ISSN 0210-6124 Tell-Tale Signs - Edgar Allan Poe and Bob Dylan: Towards a Model of Intertextuality Christopher Rollason Metz, France [email protected] This article shows how the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) cast a long shadow over the work of America’s greatest living songwriter, Bob Dylan (1941-). The work of both artists straddles the dividing-line between ‘high’ and ‘mass’ culture by pertaining to both: read through Poe, Dylan’s work may be seen as a significant manifestation of American Gothic. It is further suggested, in the context of nineteenth- century and contemporary debates on alleged ‘plagiarism’, that the textual strategy of ‘embedded’ quotation, as employed by both Poe and Dylan, points up the need today for an open and inclusive model of intertextuality.

It has been commented on in terms of interpretation of the lyrics of his songs, of their musical treatment, and of the distinctiveness of Dylan’s performance style, while Dylan himself has been treated both as an important figure in the world of popular music, and also as an artist, as a significant poet.

  • Bob Dylan Performs “It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009
Volume 19, Number 4, December 2013 Copyright © 2013 Society for Music Theory A Foreign Sound to Your Ear: Bob Dylan Performs “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009 * Steven Rings NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.rings.php KEYWORDS: Bob Dylan, performance, analysis, genre, improvisation, voice, schema, code ABSTRACT: This article presents a “longitudinal” study of Bob Dylan’s performances of the song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” over a 45-year period, from 1964 until 2009. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.

  • Freewheelin-On-Line Take Twenty One
Freewheelin-on-line Take Twenty One Freewheelin’ 219 This month’s cover could be the ultimate statement on the art of minimalism. Or, as Chris Cooper suggests, it could be a picture of Dylan in a snowstorm. Actually it’s neither of these. In fact, this month’s cover is meant to be a visual representation of silence which I suppose is quite natural when you consider that the journal itself concerns the comings and goings of an artist who makes a lot of noise. Before you accuse me of being a pretentious git let me plead for your sympathy and say that it wasn’t meant to be this way. I had planned a festive cover with bangles, baubles, beads and lots of angles. But then one foggy November eve some malicious spam spreader cast his spell my way and sent me an email, purporting to be from Paypal, inviting me to open an attachment. Dutifully, ignorantly and very stupidly I opened the attachment whereupon some worm leapfrogged my internet security system and crashed my pc. I tried to boot, boot boot the machine into life which only made matters worse. So I was left with no hardware, no software, no email facility and, worst of all, no access to Expecting Rain. Total silence on all fronts. I am now waiting for Santa Baby to hurry down the chimney with a brand new pc packed tight with some massive gigs and other things. Yet all I really wanna do is plug in a machine that works. So that I can hear that Windows jingle.

Irwin put a lot of work into finding the right master tapes as well as into the remastering process itself, but nonetheless these editions evoked a somewhat mixed response, with some albums better received than others.
