Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 31.2 (December 2009): 41–56 ISSN 0210-6124 Tell-Tale Signs - Edgar Allan Poe and Bob Dylan: Towards a Model of Intertextuality Christopher Rollason Metz, France [email protected] This article shows how the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) cast a long shadow over the work of America’s greatest living songwriter, Bob Dylan (1941-). The work of both artists straddles the dividing-line between ‘high’ and ‘mass’ culture by pertaining to both: read through Poe, Dylan’s work may be seen as a significant manifestation of American Gothic. It is further suggested, in the context of nineteenth- century and contemporary debates on alleged ‘plagiarism’, that the textual strategy of ‘embedded’ quotation, as employed by both Poe and Dylan, points up the need today for an open and inclusive model of intertextuality. Ambos artistas se ubican en una encrucijada entre la cultura ‘de elite’ y la ‘de masas’, puesto que la obra de cada uno se sitúa en ambos dominios a la vez: leída a través de Poe, la obra dylaniana aparece como una importante manifestación del gótico norteamericano. Se plantea igualmente la hipótesis de que, en el marco de los debates, tanto decimonónicos como contemporáneos, sobre el supuesto ‘plagio’, la estrategia textual, empleada tanto por Poe como por Dylan, de la cita ‘encajada’ señala la necesidad urgente de plantear un modelo abierto y global de la intertextualidad. -

The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism. -

Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966 September 29, 2006, through January 6, 2007 Exhibition Labels Exhibit Introductory Panel I Think I’ll Call It America Born into changing times, Bob Dylan shaped history in song. “Life’s a voyage that’s homeward bound.” So wrote Herman Melville, author of the great tall tale Moby Dick and one of the American mythmakers whose legacy Bob Dylan furthers. Like other great artists this democracy has produced, Dylan has come to represent the very historical moment that formed him. Though he calls himself a humble song and dance man, Dylan has done more to define American creative expression than anyone else in the past half-century, forming a new poetics from his emblematic journey. A small town boy with a wandering soul, Dylan was born into a post-war landscape of possibility and dread, a culture ripe for a new mythology. Learning his craft, he traveled a road that connected the civil rights movement to the 1960s counterculture and the revival of American folk music to the creation of the iconic rock star. His songs reflected these developments and, resonating, also affected change. Northern Minnesota seems an unlikely place to produce an icon of popular music—it’s leagues away from music birthplaces like Memphis and New Orleans, and seems as cold and characterless as the South seems mysterious. Yet growing up in the small town of Hibbing, Bob Dylan discovered his musical heritage through radio stations transmitting blues and country from all over, and formed his own bands to practice the newfound religion of rock ‘n’ roll. -

For many of us, though, the year is only really beginning now that Dylan is off on tour again. The anticipation and curiosity about how this year’s live shows shape up is one thing, but the ever-increasing yearning for the new album is something else again. It promises to be an exciting year for Dylan fans yet again as he just keeps on giving; such stamina in someone about to reach the grand old age of 65. In expectation of a well-deserved, glorious celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of Blonde on Blonde amongst both fan and mainstream media, I asked for contri- butions toward making this issue a celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Desire so that it would not be forgotten in the Blonde on Blonde tribute deluge. So, you now hold in your hands a Desire themed issue and we thank Nick Hawthorne A. J. Iriarte, Lucas Stensland, Jonathan Shimkin and Peter Vincent very much for their responses to my request for such reflections. Anniversaries are all the rage in this editorial and issue. There is a five-year-later look back from myself on the Never Ending Tour in 2001. It seems extraordinary to me that this is already five years ago; can you remember when five years felt like a long time? When, for example, it could encompass everything from Bob Dylan to Blonde on Blonde. -

It's night time in the big city and the town board in the Town Hall has been in congress since the early morning hours. The Cossack Party has been filibustering since noon regarding the parking meters outside the Church of Mary and the Lamb, the Libertines have filed a multiple of protests that has been protested against by the Christian Knights and the Blue Collars and the White Collars has reopened reclamations thrice already. The room is hot and sweaty, tobacco smoke sneaking in thru the wide-open swing-doors where Town Hall employees and senior citizens stare like dogs looking at a card trick. Outside, a streetcar named Waldorf comes to a complete stop, letting of a motley crew of writers and critics from all over the countryside. Cracked actor Cornwell in a blue Camarillo State Mental Hospital t-shirt and chinos and the kid in a second hand, red bell-boy suit shooting crap in the black and white marble floored hallway of the city parliament. The kid’s on a winning streak as the chairman of the board is carried out, in tatters and tears, on a stretcher by the night nurse, in a dust coat smoking a Macanudo Café cigarillo, and doctor Robert with his shirt untucked and his fake Borsalino askew. -

Judas 19 24/01/2007 10:02 pm Page 1 Judas! from Inside A Prune Welcome to issue 19,the Modern Times special,and thanks to all who wrote in with their thoughts on the album.We offer a variegated selection here of the many responses.So many indeed that I abandoned my own review, which may be for the best as it may not have been enthusiastic enough for most of your palates. I’ll use this double editorial to briefly explain why, (especially as I am not good at saying ‘goodbye’ so want to put it off as long as I can); although I did start off in the days prior to the full release defending the album. Or to put it more accurately, defending the pre-release teaser of ‘Thunder on the Mountain’against a stiffly negative welcome. It was not that I was knocked out by the song, but that it was being judged in isolation and my thought process was that ‘Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum’ would have sounded very weak in isolation but performs an important introductory function on “Love and Theft” so ‘Thunder on the Mountain’ should not be prejudged out of context. In addition it had the outrageously brilliant rhyme of ‘sons of bitches’ and ‘orphanages’ which I trust is original as it is difficult to imagine anyone other than Dylan thinking of it. It is not just a clever couplet but a deeply meaningful one as wars increase the number of orphanages needed, which in turn are a rich picking ground for future armies.
