We’ll be looking at a few of the lessons of prism of the opening fourteen of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, which happens to m in the context of the great circle of life. Hear them as the prayer of an elder in the faith for those who areAs younger. you hear When and reflect Paul speaks on Paul’s about words the loveto the his early hearers Christians have for at allColossae, the saints, think he about is the speaking of their love not for particularly devout and revered believers who have gone on to glory (which is one definition of a saint), but of their love for the whole gathered community of faith. Notice how Paul talks about hope, leading lives worthy of the Lord, growing in the knowledge of God, and being rescued from the power of darkness. Dear Valued Patrons, Happy New Year and welcome to the Saroyan Theatre for the second show of our 18-19 Fresno Lexus Broadway in Fresno season, Roger and Hammerstein’s The King and I. Based on the 2015 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production, The King and I is set in 1860’s Bangkok, and features several beloved classic tunes, including “Getting to Know You” and “Something Wonderful” among others. Community involvement has always been a key goal of Fresno Lexus, particularly when it involves our local youth and education. During the engagement of Disney’s The Lion King, we brought several students from Edison High School to The Saroyan to see the show and gave them an insider’s peak on how the show performs a load-in of the sets and other key choreography, making it a very special and exclusive experience. We also had four cast members visit Pinedale Elementary for a “Get Up and Go” session. The Lion King cast members lead an hour long workshop encouraging students to lead healthy and active lifestyles while learning dance sequences inspired by the show’s thrilling production number “He Lives in You.” And finally, we are so excited to continue to work with the Junior Players Foundation, and be making a significant donation in partnership with BroadwayAcross America! We’ll be working on some other exciting programs in 2019 helping our youth in Fresno. Please enjoy tonight’s performance of The King and I, and I will see you later this winter at The Saroyan! • Lesson 5: Thinking About Death *
Lesson 5: Thinking about Death * Scene 6: “Elephant Graveyard” (repeat) Scene 7: “Under the Stars” YouTube Video: “He Lives in You” Song Note: * signifies sensitive issues; requires 2 trusted adults in class . Objectives: (1) To help the students feel comfortable thinking about and talking about death in this class. To help them acknowledge that their parents will one day die and that that is a natural part of the “Circle of Life.” Even though the vast majority of children in America grow up and leave home before a parent dies, sometimes tragedy strikes. We all need to be sensitive to peers we know who have experienced this kind of tragic death, and we needn’t be afraid to talk about it. (2) To introduce the kids to a powerful new song that was written for the stage performance of The Lion King to accompany the Scene, “Under the Stars.” The song is “They Live in You.” The kids will watch a You-Tube video of that segment, and also thereby see how a South African actor was recruited to play the Rafiki character. Materials: • chime or bell • The Lion King DVD and DVD player. Before class, put Disk 1 to into the player and cue it up to Scene 6, then pause it. • Extra copies of the Human Circle of Life diagram. • Stack of new lyrics to the song “They Live in You” (photocopied from the lyrics printed at the end of this lesson) • Grab-bag with the discussion question cards (at the end of this lesson) printed out, cut apart, and stuffed into the grab-bag.
