    A Battle of Bossenden (bosci/bocage - woody) On May 31st 1838 the battle of Bossenden Wood was fought near this spot. This was the era of the Tolpuddle martyrs and rural unrest was widespread. Here a group of disaffected country labourers, led by a madman who called himself Sir William Courtenay fought militiamen 1 from Canterbury. The soldiers were attempting to restore law and order after Courtenay had murdered Nicholas Mears, a man who 4 was helping his brother in his duties as local constable. The bodies of those who were killed in the engagement were taken to The Red Lion, 2 Dunkirk (where you may learn more about these events). Courtenay had believed himself to be the Messiah and therefore immortal. His body was laid out in the stables for all to see! 3 B Denstroude Farm (den - pig pasture, strood - marshy place) CIrcULAR WALK NO 3 You are now at Denstroude, an isolated place to where those suffering from The Black Death in Canterbury were banished in medieval times. Superstition took over and in later centuries the land was farmed Dunkirk and very little. Consequently, when persecuted Huguenots arrived from Denstroude France in the late seventeenth century they were allowed to settle here. Huguenot Farm lies to your east and the Huguenot Chapel in If you have enjoyed this walk why not try the others in this series? E-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION The 2011 BMIG field weekend, held from 14th to 17th April, was based at the University of Kent at Canterbury. The county has been extensively recorded for myriapods and isopods over the last century and in his introductory talk Eric Philp presented attendees with a species list for Kent along with a challenge to add even a single species so confident was he of the effort that had gone in to ensuring that recording in the county was comprehensive. However, the main purpose of this meeting, one for which a Defra grant had been awarded through Hymettus, was a systematic survey for what were then UK BAP species, the millipedes Polyzonium germanicum and Metaiulus pratensis both of which are Kent specialities. Late thirteenth century archaeological deposits from Stonar (north of Sandwich) provide the earliest woodlouse record from Kent in the form of calcified remains of Porcellio laevis (Girling, 1979). George Newport (1803 – 1854), one of the pioneers of myriapod studies in Britain, was born at Canterbury and published important papers on these animals between 1841 and 1856. His original description of Lithobius melanops was based on specimens actually collected by him from a garden at Sandwich in 1842.

    A safer, more sustainable and more resilient highway network Appendix C Forward Works Programme 2021/22 to 2025/26 1 Introduction This document sets out our five-year Forward Works Programme for the years 2021/22 to 2025/26. It reflects the need to move away from annual programmes and to consider asset management activity a multi-year one. It is in two parts: the first concerns the next two years (2021/22 - 2022/23), and most of the sites included have already been verified by our engineers. The second part relates to years three to five of our five-year programme (2023/24 - 2025/26), and is largely based on data from our asset management systems, so may be subject to more changes as the schemes are verified. Any schemes involving the potential use of non-standard materials, such as those in conservation areas, or requiring detailed design will remain in the second part until those elements have been resolved and agreed, so that there is cost certainty prior to any commitment to deliver on the ground. This programme is subject to regular review and may change for a number of reasons including budget allocation, contract rate changes, conflicting works and to reflect our changing priorities. The programme and extent of individual sites within the programme may also be revised following engineering assessment during the design phase, and additional sites may be added or others advanced if their condition deteriorates rapidly so that we need to react in order to keep the highway in a safe and serviceable condition.

I recently decided to take a trip a virtual trip around Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) to search for place names that had genuine English-language transposals. I wanted to get away from the London emphasis of my earlier article and discover transposals of place names out around the country. Transposals of some of the larger British cities and towns have appeared in Word Ways and othcr sourccs beforc (e.g. MANCHESTER searchmcnt, LA CASTER ancestral), and I didn' t particularly want to rehash those here. I concentrated on lesser-known places. Indeed, most of the place names mentioned in this article were unknown to me. I uscd LeXpert, the Scrabble playcr' s software tool, to heIp me find transposals.
