The First Annual 2017-18 WPES IDOL APPLICATION INFORMATION: WPES IDOL is a solo singing competition fundraiser judged by both the audience and a panel of judges. This competition is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade WPES students. The event will take place on Thursday, March 1st in the Walker Park cafeteria. Students who would like to compete in WPES IDOL need to fill out an application form and return it by Monday, January 22nd (see following pages), with a copy of the song lyrics for approval. AUDITION DETAILS: Applicants must audition after school in the music room on one of three days: Tuesday, January 23rd from 4:00-5:00 Wednesday, January 24th from 4:00-5:00 Thursday, January 25th from 4:00-5:00 Audition slots will be approximately 2-3 minutes long. You will not have to sing your whole song, just part of it. The purpose of the audition will be to choose the top 16 contestants. When this form is returned WITH the lyrics to the song being sung, Mr. Weese will email a link to sign up for an audition. Please arrange for a parent to pick you up. Sixteen (16) finalists will be announced on Friday, January 26th. SOLOS, DUETS, TRIOS: This competition is really designed to be a solo competition. However, duets and trios will be accepted as entries. Judging will be an average of each student’s performance and if the entry wins a trophy, only one (1) trophy will be given. ACCOMPANIMENT OPTIONS: You can sing with or without a “karaoke”-type CD. You may accompany yourself, such as playing the guitar, while singing, though only your singing ability will be judged. Please bring your accompaniment (CD, your guitar, etc) to the audition. You may use your iPod, iPhone, tablet, etc for audition purposes. Your recorded music you are singing along with must NOT have the original singer singing. You can find “karaoke”-type tracks on iTunes.com and Amazon.com. Make sure you can find the karaoke version of your song before you put a lot of practice into learning it! WHAT KIND OF SONG CAN BE SUNG? Any style or genre of music that is sung will be accepted. Please use good taste when selecting the content of your piece. Students will be disqualified if they choose a piece unsuitable for elementary students. Mr. Weese has the final decision on what is and is not acceptable. There are some valid styles of music that do not include singing, such as rap (which is “speaking in rhythm”) that will not be accepted for this type of program. On the next page there is a list of songs that have been approved in previous years. DRESS REHEARSAL: Finalists have the option of singing in the cafeteria with a microphone on Tuesday, February 27th or Wednesday, February 28th from 4:00 to 5:30pm if they would like to practice a couple of times. Please arrange for a ride home. COMPETITION NIGHT: The WPES IDOL competition will take place on Thursday, March 1st from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Costumes are optional. The program will last approximately 2 hours. ADMISSION / FUNDRAISER: $2 per person $1 for non-competing WPES students FREE - children under 5 years old FREE - Idol contestants are free The audience can vote for their favorite contestant by purchasing “vote” tickets for 50¢ each. All proceeds will benefit the WPES music program. Contestants this year will make/decorate their own shoeboxes to receive tickets. JUDGING CRITERIA: Five areas will be given a score of 0 – 4. The five areas are Stage Presence, Preparation, Intonation (singing in tune with the track), Diction (clarity of words) and Tone (quality of vocal sound). See attached sample judge scoring sheet. SHOEBOX: All finalists will be required to design their own shoebox for the collection of audience voting tickets. The shoebox can be simply wrapped or decorated with glitter and objects. Your choice! Please make sure there is a slot in the top for the audience to put their tickets in to vote for you. QUESTIONS?
