Speaking to many people I am aware that many are quite ‘unfazed’ by this while others are feeling very vulnerable and fearful. Can I please implore you to do as Jesus asked; love your neighbour as yourself?. You may be feeling strong and fearless, but others around you may not, so please be kind. As yet, we have not been told to do anything different with our churches so services will carry on as normal, but if you do come, please be vigilant and stick to the measures in place [hand cleansing in and out, leaving every other pew empty, keeping distanced at all times and wearing face coverings]. It is in this atmosphere that we enter the season of remembrance. I am very aware that remembrance Sunday means a lot to folks here; all of Devon has historically given a much higher than average number of citizens into the military over the years, and re- membering the fallen is dear to our hearts. In collaboration with the Council and British Legion, we have decided to hold this year’s remembrance ceremony entirely outside. We will gather at the memorial but should have sound relayed to the square to enable as many as possible to take part safely. Jesus said ‘greater love has no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends’. And he did. On remembrance Sunday we call to mind those who have given their lives in military service to enable the generations that come after, including ourselves, to live in peace and freedom; and it is right that we do. But let’s also remember the one who did battle on our behalf, going to hell and back. Jesus fought for us and it cost him his life, and yet he overcame. He didn’t have to do it, he could have stayed at peace in heaven, yet for love of us, he undertook the ultimate rescue mission to bring us home at last to where no disease and no war will have power over us ever again. Looking forward to Christmas, it’s only fair to warn you that many of the celebrations and gatherings we have come to love won’t be happening this year. I can only apologise and look forward to better days. But let’s find creative ways to remember that our maker chose to come into his creation for us, and celebrate anyway! Until then, hold on to the hope that God gives us and may you walk in faith, love and peace with one another. Rev.
