Downtown Vineyard Utah 2019 – 2020
S P E C K & A S S O C I A T E S L L C DOWNTOWN VINEYARD UTAH 2019 – 2020 A central “square-about” creates a large public space while distributing traffic onto smaller local streets. Completed with DPZ Co-Design In what will be the largest Transit-Oriented Development in Utah, this plan places a new downtown on the 294-acre brownfield formerly occupied by the Geneva Steel Mill, soon to be the location of a stop on the FrontRunner commuter rail that connects Salt Lake City to Provo, and eventual TRAX light rail as well. The site conveniently lies between a growing Utah Valley University Campus, just across the railbed to the east, and the coast of picturesque Utah Lake to the west. Vineyard is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., but thus far has not developed any of the mixed-use walkable urbanism that can be found in the state’s older communities. This plan re-centers Vineyard on its rail stop, and shapes roughly three million square feet of new growth into a complete community of places to live, work, shop, worship, and recreate. Taking advantage of its large site, the plan is organized as two neighborhoods, each centered on a linear promenade reaching to the lakefront and connected by a main avenue. The larger promenade, illustrated above, terminates on a civic square, which then transitions to a “shared space” main street reaching to the station plaza. The square itself functions as a traffic distribution device, like a roundabout, so that no one street beyond it need contain more than two driving lanes. -

Signatures on file in the Graduate School. iii Abstract Recent studies have reconsidered the Mormon Culture Region in light of its 1880{1920 transition to American political and economic norms. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation. Archaeology of the Colorado Coal Field War, 1913-1914 University of Denver Deliverable #5 Project #2000-02-045 Berwind Historical Marker TEXT FOR THE BERWIND HISTORICAL MARKER On this site stood the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company's coal camp of Berwind, established in 1888. The camp was named after Edward J. Berwind, president of the Colorado Coal and Iron Company, which was later bought out by CF&I. In 1901 the company established the Tabasco coal camp, located one-mile northwest of here on the Ludlow Branch of the Colorado and Southern Railway. The camps were home to many ethnic groups. The largest group at Berwind were Italians. There were also large numbers of Eastern Europeans, Mexicans and Greeks. While men worked in the mines, women spent their days raising children, cooking, and cleaning. The presence of heavy air-borne coal dust and the absence of running water made for very unsanitary conditions in the household. Working conditions in the mines were exploitative and unsafe. The terrible living and working conditions caused the miners to engage in a series of strikes. The 1913 strike was one of the most violent. On September 23, 1913, Berwind's strikers streamed into the Ludlow Tent Colony located at the mouth of this canyon to the east. This strike climaxed with the Ludlow Massacre of April 20, 1914, and eventually ended in December 1914. As a result of the strike living and working conditions improved in company towns throughout the U.S. Here in Berwind improvements included two new churches, two new schools, and a YMCA. -

While historians have written prolifically about the Ludlow Massacre, which took place during the 1913- 1914 Colorado coal strike led by the United Mine Workers of America, there has been a curious lack of attention to the Columbine Massacre that occurred not far away within the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike, led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). -
