The World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions is the third event in the PGA TOUR's wraparound schedule that bridges two years with 43 official regular season events and four FedExCup Playoffs events. Over the span of the PGA TOUR season, players vie to become the FedExCup champion, which distinguishes the one player who not only performs well during the PGA TOUR season, but also excels through the four-event FedExCup Playoffs, culminating with the 2017 TOUR Championship. He played his final 45 holes bogey free. With his strong performance at the Sheshan International Golf Club, Matsuyama won his third career PGA TOUR event at the age of 24 years, 8 months, 5 days in his 85th start on TOUR, making him the youngest winner of the HSBC Champions. Matsuyama’s victory earns him 550 FedExCup points to take the lead in the standings in the early part of the 2016-17 season, the first time he has led the FedExCup standings in his career. The win makes Matsuyama not only the first Japanese player to win a World Golf Championships event, but the first Asian to accomplish the feat. Matsuyama’s seven-shot win is the largest margin of victory in HSBC Champions history, the previous-best mark of three shots was set by Martin Kaymer in 2011 and Dustin Johnson in 2013. It is also the largest margin of victory on TOUR since Jordan Spieth won the Tournament of Champions by eight shots in January of this year. This is the third time he went into the final round holding at least a share of the 54-hole lead on the PGA TOUR, his previous best finish a T3 at the 2015 Tournament of Champions. Matsuyama, who finished a career-best 13th in the FedExCup last season, won the Japan Open on the Japan Golf Tour two weeks ago before finishing runner-up to Justin Thomas at last week’s CIMB Classic in his 2016-2017 PGA TOUR season debut. The Japan Open was Matsuyama’s sixth international win. In Matsuyama’s two previous PGA TOUR victories, the 2014 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open, he was third and tied for second heading into the final round in each respective tournament, each of which he won in a playoff. With his runner-up finish at the CIMB Classic last week, Matsuyama moved to No. 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking, marking the first time in his career that the 24 year old has cracked the top 10. At No. 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Matsuyama is one of the eight players from the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking who played in this week’s HSBC Champions. Matsuyama defeated Rickie Fowler in a playoff at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last season on the OGA TOUR. This is his second top-10 finish in a World Golf Championships event in his 14th start and improves on his best finish at the HSBC Champions (T41-2014). With his final-round 66, Matsuyama has shot in the 60s in each of his last 10 rounds on the PGA TOUR dating back to his second-round 71 at the TOUR Championship. In his last eight rounds, Matsuyama is a combined 43- under-par. In his first three full seasons on the PGA TOUR, Matsuyama advanced to the season-ending TOUR Championship in the FedExCup Playoffs each year, his best finish in the FedExCup this last season when he finished 13th in the final standings. In this young PGA TOUR season, Matsuyama is the second player to win in his 20s, joining last week’s winner of the CIMB Classic, Justin Thomas. He is also the first 54-hole leader to win on the PGA TOUR this season. This is Stenson’s sixth start in the HSBC Champions, his previous-best finish a T11 at last year’s event. The 2016 Open Championship winner has one World Golf Championships victory (2007 Dell Match Play) and five total PGA TOUR wins, including the 2013 FedExCup. Stenson has 13 additional international victories, including the 2016 BWM International Open on the European Tour. Daniel Berger Playing in his second HSBC Champions (finished T11 last year), the 2014-15 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, Daniel Berger, shot a final-round 69 to finish T2, seven shots behind Matsuyama. Berger won his first PGA TOUR event during the 2015-16 season, capturing the FedEx St. Jude Classic by three shots over Brooks Koepka. The former Florida State Seminole has qualified for the season-ending TOUR Champion in his first two seasons on TOUR, finishing 11th in the final FedExCup standings in 2014-15 and 26th last season. This is Berger’s second start of the 2016-17 PGA TOUR season; he finished T51 in last week’s CIMB Classic at TPC Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Miscellaneous stats 2015-16 FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy closed with a 6-under 66 to finish T4 in his first start since a dramatic final round at the 2016 TOUR Championship, where he defeated Ryan Moore in a playoff to win the tournament and the FedExCup. This was McIlroy’s sixth start in the HSBC Champions, never finishing worse than T11. Russell Knox, looking to become the second player in PGA TOUR history to successfully defend a World Golf Championships title, began the final round three shots behind Matsuyama and struggled to a final round 74 to finish T9. Australian Adam Scott, who shot an 8-over 80 in the second round, improved by 16 strokes in the third round, firing an 8-under 64, the lowest round of the day. He continued his strong play in the final round, shooting a 6- under 66 to finish T14. In the third round, Matt Kuchar made the third ace of his career, and first since 2007, at the par-3 17th hole with a 5-iron, the fourth recorded this season on the PGA TOUR. Due to the deteriorating condition of the back tee, the hole had to be reduced in length to below 200 yards. As this negated the insurance conditions applicable to the hole-in-one prize offering, the prize of a Cadillac CT6 40T Prem was not available in the third round or the final round. In the afternoon wave, Shigeki Maruyama fired an opening-round 5-under-par 65 to take a 1-shot lead over four others. In a day defined by high winds and sporadic rain, Maruyama managed to post six birdies and give up just a lone bogey at the par-four 12th. Shigeki Maruyama is coming off a particularly tough 2008 season where he withdrew from five of the 18 events in which he entered. His best finish of 2008 was a T25 here in Honolulu at the Sony Open in Hawaii. This marks the 11th time Shigeki Maruyama has competed in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Of the previous 10, he has missed just two cuts (1999, 2007). Of the eight cuts he did make, he has claimed three top-10 finishes at Waialae. While he has held a share of the 18-hole lead three times in his PGA TOUR career, each of which occurred in 2004 (U.S. Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Northern Trust), Shigeki Maruyama has never held an out- right 18-hole lead.     COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.
