2009 Sony Open in Hawaii Round 1 Notes
2009 Sony Open in Hawaii (The second of 37 events in the PGA TOUR Regular Season) Honolulu, HI January 15-18, 2008 FedExCup Points: 500 Purse: $5,400,000 Waialae Country Club Par/Yards: 35-35--70/7,044 First-Round Notes – Thursday, January 15, 2009 Weather: High temperature of 76 degrees under partly cloudy skies; strong WSW winds at 15-20 mph. In the afternoon wave, Shigeki Maruyama fired an opening-round 5-under-par 65 to take a 1-shot lead over four others. In a day defined by high winds and sporadic rain, Maruyama managed to post six birdies and give up just a lone bogey at the par-four 12th. Shigeki Maruyama is coming off a particularly tough 2008 season where he withdrew from five of the 18 events in which he entered. His best finish of 2008 was a T25 here in Honolulu at the Sony Open in Hawaii. This marks the 11th time Shigeki Maruyama has competed in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Of the previous 10, he has missed just two cuts (1999, 2007). Of the eight cuts he did make, he has claimed three top-10 finishes at Waialae. While he has held a share of the 18-hole lead three times in his PGA TOUR career, each of which occurred in 2004 (U.S. Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Northern Trust), Shigeki Maruyama has never held an out- right 18-hole lead. By the way, none of the three in which he was co-leader after 18 holes yielded a victory. -

Mardan-Chases-New-Leader-Coetzee-At-Afrasia-Bank-Mauritius-Open.Pdf
PRESS RELEASE MARDAN CHASES NEW LEADER COETZEE AT AFRASIA BANK MAURITIUS OPEN Domaine de Bel Ombre, Mauritius, May 9: Veteran Singaporean Mardan Mamat battled to a four-under-par 67 to lie three strokes behind new leader George Coetzee after the third round of the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on Saturday. The four-time Asian Tour winner traded five birdies against a bogey at the Heritage Golf Club to lie in solo fourth position heading into the final day of the €1 million (approximately US$1.1 million) tournament tri-sanctioned by the Asian, European and Sunshine Tours. South African star Coetzee equaled the course record with a brilliant 65 to surge one shot ahead of countryman Thomas Aiken and overnight leader Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark who returned a 68 and 70 respectively. Asian Tour regular Carlos Pigem of Spain dropped two late bogeys for a 69 to earn a share of fifth place with amongst others, Australian Nathan Holman, four back of Coetzee, who leads on 11-under-par 202. Power-packed Coetzee, who is ranked 63rd in the world, crafted four birdies on the card and holed out for a stunning eagle from the fairway on the par five seventh hole to charge into contention for a career seventh victory at the magnificent Heritage course. “As I walked off the course, I told my manager I don’t know how I’m shooting under par the way I’m playing, but obviously the course must suit my eye pretty well,” smiled the 28-year-old. “I’m pretty happy with the way things turned out in the end. -
Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”. -
