To the top of Parks Canada As Parks Canada’s centennial celebrations were getting underway, the agency’s chief executive officer, Alan Latourelle (pictured in Torngat Mountains National Park in Labrador), sat down for a conversation with the editors of Canadian Geographic. The complete interview appears here: CG Give us a sense of what the centennial of Parks Canada means for the agency. A.L. For Parks Canada, and for Canada, it is really celebrating the first national park organization in the world. This is a country that had the foresight and leadership to be the first to build an exceptional system of natural and heritage places. J. B. Harkin [first commissioner of the Dominion Parks Branch in 1911] and others before us set the way for a system plan that is representative of our country. So, for me, it is a celebration of who we are as Canadians and of the foresight and leadership of past heads of Parks Canada and past prime ministers. CG How do you go about celebrating that? Tell us about some of the events planned for 2011 that will bring that to life? A.L. It started this weekend with Winterlude here in Ottawa, where the opening ceremony included a project called the National Parks Project. Fifty musicians and filmmakers from Canada went through our national parks last summer and each produced a one‐hour documentary. Some of the best were being showcased at Winterlude. We want to connect Canadians to their stories, to our national parks, to our national historic sites, and invite them to celebrate with us. -

Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract PARRISH, JORDAN G., M.A., August 2017, Film Studies The Undead Subject of Lost Decade Japanese Horror Cinema Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis argues that Japanese Horror films released around the turn of the twenty- first century define a new mode of subjectivity: “undead subjectivity.” Exploring the implications of this concept, this study locates the undead subject’s origins within a Japanese recession, decimated social conditions, and a period outside of historical progression known as the “Lost Decade.” It suggests that the form and content of “J- Horror” films reveal a problematic visual structure haunting the nation in relation to the gaze of a structural father figure. In doing so, this thesis purports that these films interrogate psychoanalytic concepts such as the gaze, the big Other, and the death drive. This study posits themes, philosophies, and formal elements within J-Horror films that place the undead subject within a worldly depiction of the afterlife, the films repeatedly ending on an image of an emptied-out Japan invisible to the big Other’s gaze. -

RESEARCH BULLETIN No. 264 March 1988 Parks Canada Archaeology in Western Region, 1984 Introduction The Western Region Archaeological Research Unit of Parks Canada administered 90 projects in Alberta and British Columbia in 1984 ( See Table 1). All projects were under the financial management and administrative responsibility of the Regional Archaeologist of the Historical and Archaeological Research Section. Projects were completed through utilization of in-house resources, under contract, or through special agreements. This was an increase of 54 per cent over projects covered under permit in 1983. Seventy-two projects were associated with various National Parks and National Historic Parks and Sites in Alberta while 18 projects were related to British Columbia parks and sites. Of these, 57 involved HRIAs (areal and linear site surveys and assessments), eight mitigations (salvage and conservation archaeology involving major or test excavations) and 25 special projects (support activities, special studies, overviews and research). Most of the heritage resources impact and assessment projects were conducted by Regional Salvage Archaeologist Ian Sumpter. Studies were completed in Elk Island, Waterton Lakes, Jasper, Yoho, Glacier and Banff National Parks. Such comparisons could amount to little more than poking fun at a political opponent. More recently, however, even Trump supporters seem to be buying into the analogy, purchasing Trump posters featuring their candidate in front of an American flag as backdrop, with a quote from the Dark Lord himself: "There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it" (Rowling 1997: 211; see also Farah 2016; Isaac 2016). In this study I evaluate the relevance of Harry Potter consumption–both reading Harry Potter books and viewing Harry Potter movies–to attitudes toward Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president in 2016. If Trump is analogous to Voldemort – indeed some have begun using the term “Trumpdemort” (see www.redbubble.com)—then one would expect Harry Potter readers and viewers to be more likely to oppose Trump and his policies. Can Fictional Stories Influence Real World Opinions? The influence of the tremendously popular Harry Potter series has been compared to that of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book that was widely credited with “galvanizing public opinion against slavery” (Strange 2002: 263; see also Time 2007). But then, as now, there is sparse evidence from empirical research that fictional stories, even extremely popular ones, influence political opinion. Political leaders in the U.S. often express concerns about how fictional television programming may influence mass opinion (e.g., “Dan Quayle” 1992). -

Women's Experimental Cinema
FILM STUDIES/WOMEN’S STUDIES BLAETZ, Women’s Experimental Cinema provides lively introductions to the work of fifteen avant- ROBIN BLAETZ, garde women filmmakers, some of whom worked as early as the 1950s and many of whom editor editor are still working today. In each essay in this collection, a leading film scholar considers a single filmmaker, supplying biographical information, analyzing various influences on her Experimental Cinema Women’s work, examining the development of her corpus, and interpreting a significant number of individual films. The essays rescue the work of critically neglected but influential women filmmakers for teaching, further study, and, hopefully, restoration and preservation. Just as importantly, they enrich the understanding of feminism in cinema and expand the ter- rain of film history, particularly the history of the American avant-garde. The essays highlight the diversity in these filmmakers’ forms and methods, covering topics such as how Marie Menken used film as a way to rethink the transition from ab- stract expressionism to Pop Art in the 1950s and 1960s, how Barbara Rubin both objecti- fied the body and investigated the filmic apparatus that enabled that objectification in her film Christmas on Earth (1963), and how Cheryl Dunye uses film to explore her own identity as a black lesbian artist. At the same time, the essays reveal commonalities, in- cluding a tendency toward documentary rather than fiction and a commitment to nonhi- erarchical, collaborative production practices. The volume’s final essay focuses explicitly on teaching women’s experimental films, addressing logistical concerns (how to acquire the films and secure proper viewing spaces) and extending the range of the book by sug- gesting alternative films for classroom use.
