After he knocked him down he saw him fall backwards, striking his head fatally on a stone. The deposition arrives after the jury has returned a verdict of guilty. Wickham receives a royal pardon. In the sixth and final section, the backstory is told, after we have been given the outcome of the trial. Wickham had fathered an illegitimate child by Louisa Bidwell. She, however, is run over and killed outside the high court where Wickham has been tried, and it was expected that Louisa's married sister in Birmingham would adopt the child. Louisa, however, has only lately discovered that the father of her love child, Georgie, is in fact Wickham. They arrange his baptism, and give him the name of John. First , I do have to agree with reviewers who noted anachronisms of language and highly unlikely behaviours - Georgiana falling to her knees crying in front of male servants in the public rooms being one of the most obvious. I do not believe for a moment in the central premise that Darcy and family would be cast into Outer Darkness socially because his brother-in-law was a criminal. Gossiped about undoubtedly, but bad apples among the aristocracy are hardly uncommon now or then. I feel also critical of the costuming and general appearance of Elizabeth , it become clear at the end as to why she might have looked tired but why she should be so badly dressed is beyond me. One coat-like garment resembles nothing so much as a hessian bag and she appears to only wear two plain dresses for weeks on end. Georgiana seems to have only one - though it is a nicer one. And Elizabeth's hair seem so be permanently dishevelled for no good reason. While I'm carping , I also have to say I don't understand why there appears to be almost no upper servants in the vast edifice of Pemberley. Ah well, no matter really I guess. On the plus side, I thought all the acting was great , especially the female cast. Lydia was beautifully cast and played, as was Lady Catherine and Mrs Bennett. I wish they could have had bigger roles in fact. So, in spite of the above mentioned criticisms, I have to say it was a very watchable period drama and , actually, much more fun than the the book. There is further impetus for him to find the answer, because otherwise it is likely that Lydia, his sister-in-law, will put a great strain on the upcoming ball and Elizabeth. However, when they reach the spot where Lydia said Wickham was murdered, they find Wickham alive. Instead, they see that Denny is dead— Wickham confesses that he is responsible for Denny's demise. Wickham's confession and Denny's death prompts an investigation. As Wickham was once Darcy's friend, Darcy has difficulty believing the man is capable of murder, even though he strongly dislikes him for his treatment of both Darcy's younger sister and Lydia. Yet, Wickham is the only one without an alibi. It's decided that Wickham must stand trial for Denny's murder. The trial is moved to London in order to ensure that it's fair once it becomes known that Darcy and Wickham are connected through their wives. However, that doesn't prevent Darcy from having to testify. Though Darcy states Wickham is incapable of murder, the fact that Darcy did not extend Wickham an invitation to the annual ball causes people to gossip. Wickham is found guilty of Denny's murder and sentenced to death by hanging. Upon hearing the sentence, a character named Eleanor Younge, runs from the courtroom and attempts suicide. While her reasons for this are not made plain at the time, her actions catch the reader's attention.

The mystery at the heart of the novel was not particularly gripping. After all, it's hard to find sympathy for Wickham James' foray into Austen's work felt right, and I enjoyed the references to other Austen novels, but as a mystery? Beautifully written and very evocative of Jane Austin. The solution to the mystery cannot be deduced from the evidence however, and story gets difficult to follow. Publisher Description.
