I argue that in light of the social and political turmoil surrounding the French Revolution, Radcliffe and Shelley call not so much for Revolution or drastic reform but for a change in the ways in which individuals respond to the needs of others, both human and nonhuman, and take responsibility for each other. The ways in which humans interact with the nonhuman inform the positive and negative practices that they should use to interact with other humans and vice versa. Critics debate whether or not Radcliffe supported an overturn of the social order. I argue that Radcliffe calls for a continuation of the established social order, but she also calls for compassion of all human beings no matter their social standing. Chapter One considers the connection between nature and culture in Radcliffe’s A Sicilian Romance, The Romance of the Forest, The Mysteries of Udolpho, and The Italian through the mode of Gothic literature. Specifically, I argue that Radcliffe’s “explained supernatural” occupies a liminal space between nature and culture. Furthermore, some of the upper class are able to discern that the “real,” or material, supernatural (e.g. ghosts and monsters) do not exist while still acknowledging that some form of spiritual supernatural presence is possible, thus reflecting a heightened awareness of the existence of entities and concepts beyond the material. Chapter Two looks at Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian to argue that characters who are able to appreciate nature, particularly landscape, are more admirable than iii those who ignore it. Specifically, these characters indicate an openness to forming reciprocal relationships with the landscapes, allowing the views offered by the landscapes to

Obsessing about the Catholic Other: Religion and the Secularization Process in Gothic Literature Perhaps it was totally predictable that the past year has seen both the publication of a major book by Lennard Davis entitled Obsession!, as well as a new two player board game called "Obsession" in which one player wins by moving his ten rings along numbered slots. Interest in obsession, it would seem, is everywhere in high and low cultures. For Davis, obsession is both a cultural manifestation of what modernity has wrought, and a psychoanalytical phenomenon: in fact, he defines it as a recurring thought whose content has become disconnected from its original significance causing the dominance of repetitive mental intrusions (Davis 6). Recent studies have revealed that there are five broad categories of obsession: dirt and contamination, aggression, the placing of inanimate objects in order, sex, and finally religion2 Another recent study, however, claims that obsessive thoughts generally center on three main themes: the aggressive, the sexual, or the blasphemous (qtd. Davis 9). It is that last category - the blasphemous - that I think emerges in British gothic literature of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, particularly as seen in the persistent anti-Catholicism that plays such a central role in so many of those works (Radcliffe's The italian, Lewis's The Monk, and Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer being only the most obvious).

    Mary Shelley Early Life Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, the daughter of two prominent radical thinkers of the Enlightenment. Her mother was the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, best known for An Inquiry Concerning Political Justice. Unfortunately, Wollstonecraft died just ten days after her daughter’s birth. Mary was raised by her father and stepmother Mary Jane Clairmont. When she was 16 years old, Mary fell in love with the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who visited her father’s house frequently. They eloped to France, as Shelley was already married. They eventually married after two years when Shelley’s wife Harriet committed suicide. The Writing of Frankenstein In the summer of 1816, the Shelleys rented a villa close to that of Lord Byron in Switzerland. The weather was bad (Mary Shelley described it as “wet, ungenial” in her 1831 introduction to Frankenstein), due to a 1815 eruption of a volcano in Indonesia that disrupted weather patterns around the world. Stuck inside much of the time, the company, including Byron, the Shelleys, Mary’s stepsister Claire Clairmont, and Byron’s personal physician John Polidori, entertained themselves with reading stories from Fantasmagoriana, a collection of German ghost stories. Inspired by the stories, the group challenged themselves to write their own ghost stories. The only two to complete their stories were Polidori, who published The Vampyre in 1819, and Mary Shelley, whose Frankenstein went on to become one of the most popular Gothic tales of all time.

  • Tracing Women's Romanticism
    Tracing Women’s Romanticism This book explores a cosmopolitan tradition of nineteenth-century idealist novels written in response to Germaine de Stae¨l’s originary novel of the artist as heroine, Corinne, or Italy. The author discusses the Bildungsromane of Mary Shelley, Bettine von Arnim and George Sand, as responses to Stae¨l’s portrait of the artist as abandoned woman, victim of betrayed love. The first study to consider these major figures from European Romanticism as members of a coherent tradition, Tracing Women’s Romanticism argues that Stae¨l, Shelley, Arnim, and Sand create proto-feminist visions of spiritual and artistic transcendence that constitute a critique of Romanticism from within. In novels such as Valperga, Die Gu¨nderode and Consuelo, disappointment with Romantic love becomes a catalyst for heightened spiritual, historical and political awareness. This awareness leads to disillusionment with Romanticism’s privileging of melancholy, Byronic will and masculinist conceptions of history and Bildung. For these women Romanticists, the search for self-transcendence means rejection of the socially defined limits of individual identity. This abandonment or dissolution of the individual self comes about through historical, artistic, and meditative efforts that culminate in the revelation of the divinity of a collective and potentially revolutionary self.
