Hbo Premieres the Hbo Film Hemingway & Gellhorn HBO PREMIERES THE HBO FILM “HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN” Miami, August 2, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced the premiere of the original drama from HBO Films Hemingway & Gellhorn on August 12. Starring two of today’s most acclaimed actors, and directed by Academy Award® nominee Philip Kaufman, Hemingway & Gellhorn tells the story of the passionate love affair and tumultuous marriage between trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman) and literary giant Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen), following the adventurous writers through all the great conflicts of their time – from the Spanish Civil War and beyond. Also starring in the film is Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro (Paco Zarra). The film follows the relationship from the moment they met in Key West in 1936 (when Hemingway was married to second wife Pauline), to their shared experiences during the volatile Spanish Civil War, to more strained times when, as husband and wife, they traveled to China (together) and WWII (independently). Considered by many to be the greatest of all war correspondents – man or woman – Gellhorn’s drive and success catapulted her beyond the confines of her marriage into a revered and respected career independent of Hemingway’s. The combined magnetism of Hemingway and Gellhorn ushered them into social circles that included the elite of Hollywood, the aristocracy of the literary world and the First Family of the United States. As witnesses to history, they covered all the great conflicts of their time, but the war they couldn’t survive was the war between themselves. The cast of Hemingway & Gellhorn includes Nicole Kidman as Martha Gellhorn, who won an Oscar® for “The Hours” and Golden Globes for “The Hours,” “Moulin Rouge!” and “To Die For.” Also starring in the film is Clive Owen as Ernest Hemmingway, who was an Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner for “Closer.” Other cast members include: David Strathairn (“Goodnight, and Good Luck,” HBO’s “Temple Grandin”), Rodrigo Santoro (“I Love You Philip Morris,” “300”), SAG Award nominee Molly Parker (“The Road,” HBO’s “Deadwood”), Golden Globe nominee Parker Posey (“Superman Returns,” “A Mighty Wind”), Santiago Cabrera (“Che: Part 1”), actor-musician Lars Ulrich (“Get Him to the Greek,” founding member of Metallica), Saverio Guerra (“Lucky You”), Emmy® nominee Peter Coyote (“Erin Brockovich,” “Law & Order: LA”), Joan Chen (“The Last Emperor”) and Emmy® and Golden Globe winner Tony Shalhoub (“Monk,” HBO’s “Too Big to Fail”). The film is directed by Philip Kaufman, who is an Oscar® nominee and BAFTA winner for his screenplay for “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.” Executive producers are Peter Kaufman (“Quills,” “Henry and June”), Trish Hofmann (“Notorious,” “The New World”), Emmy® winner James Gandolfini (HBO’s “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq” and “Wartorn 1861-2010”), Emmy® nominee Alexandra Ryan (HBO’s “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq”) and Emmy® nominee Barbara Turner (“Petulia,” “Pollock”). Nancy Sanders (“Huff”) and Mark Armstrong (“Holla If You Hear Me”) are co-executive producers. The production team includes three-time Academy Award®-winning editor Walter Murch (“The English Patient,” “Apocalypse Now”), director of photography Rogier Stoffers (“Quills,” “John Q”), Academy Award®-nominated production designer Geoffrey Kirkland (“The Right Stuff,” “Angela’s Ashes”) and Academy Award®-nominated costume designer Ruth Myers (“The Painted Veil,” “L.A. • Pieces of a Woman
PIECES OF A WOMAN Directed by Kornél Mundruczó Starring Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Falls, Ellen Burstyn **WORLD PREMIERE – In Competition – Venice Film Festival 2020** **OFFICIAL SELECTION – Gala Presentations – Toronto International Film Festival 2020** Press Contacts: US: Julie Chappell | [email protected] International: Claudia Tomassini | [email protected] Sales Contact: Linda Jin | [email protected] 1 SHORT SYNOPSIS When an unfathomable tragedy befalls a young mother (Vanessa Kirby), she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that touches her husband (Shia LaBeouf), her mother (Ellen Burstyn), and her midwife (Molly Parker). Director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014) and partner/screenwriter Kata Wéber craft a deeply personal meditation and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss. SYNOPSIS Martha and Sean Carson (Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably during a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife (Molly Parker), who faces charges of criminal negligence. Thus begins a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife whom she must face in court. From director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014), with artistic support from executive producer Martin Scorsese, and written by Kata Wéber, Mundruczó’s partner, comes a deeply personal, searing domestic aria in exquisite shades of grey and an ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.

  • This Unit Examines Change in Newfoundland and Labrador from the Referenda of 1948 Until 2010
This unit examines change in Newfoundland and Labrador from the referenda of 1948 until 2010. In 1948, two referenda were held, which gave the people a say in the future form of governance for the colony. In these referenda, voters chose Confederation with Canada over the options of responsible government and Commission of Government. On March 31, 1949, Newfoundland officially became Canada’s tenth province. Joseph R. Smallwood became the province’s first premier and, from 1949 until 1972, his government worked to diversify the economy in order to make Newfoundland and Labrador a more prosperous and modern province. New roads were built, water and sewer systems were installed, and a rural electrification program was completed, in order to encourage industrial development. Smallwood’s government tried to diversify the economy in two main ways – by establishing small-scale industries and by funding mega-projects at Long Harbour, Come By Chance, Churchill Falls, and Stephenville. These efforts had varying degrees of success. Smallwood’s government introduced social programs, which it hoped would provide a better standard of living for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Major improvements were made in education, health care, and communications, electrical power, and transportation infrastructure. 474 This painting entitled We Filled ‘Em To The Gunnells by Sheila Hollander shows what life possibly may have been like in XXX circa XXX. Fig. 3.4 The provincial government realized that, even with help from the federal government, providing essential services across the province was a challenge, especially as the outport population was scattered along thousands of kilometres of coastline.
