To all Surrey Brethren and Companions, Well it has been two weeks now since the first relaxation of the lockdown rules and we seem to be coming through it relatively ok. This weekly quiz is intended to give you something else to think about rather than worrying about the effects that this terrible virus is having on people throughout the world. All questions this week are about the in line with the fact that this is a special Holy Royal Arch editorial controlled edition of Surrey Risings.

You will have had to register for Solomon in to answer some of the questions and it is anticipated that you will have possibly explored more of its contents than just those required to participate in the quiz.

For those who have yet still to try out Solomon (for free) please register on Solomon at https://solomon.ugle.org.uk this will then enable you to search for some of the correct (?) answers posed by the quiz.

As previously stated, if you are not yet a member of the Holy Royal Arch then please do not be tempted to answer these questions as, when you do become a member, you will find some of magic missing as you will have already studied several aspects of it – before you should do!! Likewise, if you are not yet a Fellowcraft or Master Mason please do not be tempted to answer questions of that degree before you attain that rank. Above all though – enjoy!!

The answers to last week’s quiz are listed below and the new quiz is listed after that. Please remember that there will not be any – just the satisfaction of “making a daily advancement” and having something Masonic to do in these very difficult times.

Any suggestions/criticisms (constructive only) and especially suggested questions together with the answers should be sent to both quiz setters at [email protected] and [email protected] N.B. Should you submit a question (with the answer(s) please) and it is selected for one of these quizzes then an acknowledgement of your contribution will be given stating you name and Lodge/ and number.

Right then here are the answers to last week’s quiz!!!!!

2. East Surrey Lodge was the last Lodge in Surrey to be consecrated in the 19th Century – 26th July 1899. Merton Lodge was the first Lodge in Surrey to be consecrated in the 20th Century – 24th January 1900. Likewise: Windlesham Dawn Lodge was the last Lodge in Surrey to be consecrated in the 20th century - 30th November 1998. Fountainhead Lodge was the first Lodge in Surrey to be consecrated in the 21st Century - 29th February 2000.

3. Manasseh. Manasseh promoted idolatry throughout his kingdom, built pagan temples and even sacrificed one of his sons in the fires of Moloch worship. A Flesh coloured Ensign with a device of a vine planted by the side of a wall.

4. The Order of the Golden Fleece is an order of .

The first Golden Fleece comes to us from Greek Mythology. In the story of Jason and the Argonauts, the crew of the Argos, travel to find the Golden Fleece to help put Jason on the throne.

The other Golden Fleece is the Order of the Golden Fleece and is more likely the Golden Fleece spoken of in our ritual. The Order of the Golden Fleece was created in 1430 by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy, who is also known as Philip the Good. The order is a Roman Catholic and still exists today.

Since the order had its beginnings in 1430, it means that it was created some 40 years after the Regius Poem. In the poem, which is believed to have been written by a monk in 1390, it details the events in the court of Athelstan the first King of England. It details the rules and regulations are laid out for the behaviour of a mason and the manner in which a master should run his lodge. At that time Freemasons were all, as far as we know, operative masons. Even if the Regius poem is a fictitious account of events that were happening around 900 A.D. in the court of Athelstan, based on the content of the Regius Poem, was more than likely already around in 1390. Making the white leather apron older than the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Regardless of which Golden Fleece we are talking about the idea of our ritual is to remind ourselves and teach our new brothers the importance of the item that has been placed in their care. It should remind us every time we enter a Lodge to ask ourselves have we treated, by our actions, that ancient emblem with the respect and care it deserves.

5. He was the son of Isaac and Rebecca and had a brother called Esau. He was on his way to the city of Haran in the region of Padan-aram in Mesopotamia and being weary and benighted on a desert plain, he lay down to rest, taking the earth for his bed, a stone for his pillow, and the Canopy of Heaven for a covering. Jacob had stolen his brother’s birth right and had to flee, as in a moment of rage and disappointment Esau had threatened to kill him. His parents had ordered Jacob to go there in order to escape Esau’s wrath.

6. These words are the motto of the Craft, and translate as, Listen, Observe, Be Silent. As seen on your Certificate.

7. In Provincial Grand Lodge and Grand Lodge, the Provincial Grand Pursuivant and Grand Pursuivant perform the same duties as that of an Inner Guard in a Private Lodge.

In some Provinces it is the duty of the Provincial Grand Pursuivant to announce all applicants for admission into Provincial Grand Lodge by their names and Masonic titles; to take charge of the jewels and regalia of Provincial Grand Lodge; to attend all meetings of Provincial Grand Lodge, and to perform such other duties as may be required by the Provincial or presiding officer.

8. Anthony Sayer.

9. There is no light in the North because King Solomon's Temple, of which every Lodge is a representation, was placed so far to the North of the ecliptic that both the sun and moon at their meridian could dart no rays of light into the northern part of the temple.

ECLIPTIC: the imaginary line followed on the earth's surface by the direct ray of the sun during the year. It makes an angle of 23' 27' with the equator. Jerusalem is located in approximately 31' 30' north attitude, that is, approximately 7' 3' north of the ecliptic.

10. The site of the temple in Great Queen Street would not accommodate a large crowd so it was arranged for the Grand Master to perform a stone laying ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, some three miles away. At the Royal Albert Hall, a replica of the foundation stone was laid on a platform. Over 6,000 freemasons watched the dummy foundation stone being laid in the centre of the auditorium by the Grand Master, The Duke of Connaught, and in synchronisation, via electric relay, the actual corner stone in Great Queen Street was laid simultaneously by a crane.
