Even before the release of their 1988 debut album, Vivid , the band members were actively involved in the Black Rock Coalition, a non-profit organization founded by journalist Greg Tate, producer Konda Mason, and Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid as a means of supporting and sponsoring black rock artists. Consisting of Reid, Will Calhoun (drums), Corey Glover (vocals), and Doug Wimbish (bass)-the latter of whom replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992-Living Color has successfully overcome a number of obstacles faced by black rock artists seeking to break into the commercial music industry. The very release of Vivid by Epic Records was one such success. The album quickly hit number 6 on the Billboard 200 . Soon after, MTV picked up “Cult of Personality,” which was awarded both MTV’s Best New Artist Award and a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989. More than twenty years later, “Cult of Personality” remains immensely popular and has recently featured in the game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , so now you too can enjoy Living Colour’s experience of having to play a really great song over, and over, and over again. -

CD Review - CBGB’s OMFUG Masters/Living Colour Live August 19, 2005 Posted on October 28th, 2008 by Damon Harris in Music Reviews , Reviews Read 306 times. It delights me to review yet another of CBGB’s live recordings. As we all know, the most popular rock club in Manhattan is now closed, however the legacy is continuing strong. Hopefully the Bowery collections will turn some heads and get the club back open. We can only dream. This latest edition in the CBGB Bowery collection features the August 19th, 2005 performance of the long time consistent rockers, that go by the handle Living Colour. The core of this band is with guitarist Vernon Reid, seeing how he was the only founding member who had any previous band experience. This does not undermine the hard rock vocals of singer Corey Glover, who in my opinion could do well in either the punk or metal genre. This duo is supported by Muzz Skillings on Bass and Will Calhoun on Drums. It’s actually fitting that they are included in the Bowery collection, since they first honed their skills there and they are no less hardcore in this compilation. I have always loved seeing my favorite bands live (who doesn’t) and just like the CBGB’s H2O recording, this takes you front stage. -

Then you know why they are here, searching for a new life." But Ms. Payne, do you really, truly know why? I don't t think so. t Last month's issue of The Other Side had an article that talked about the Latino immigrant workers in e Southern California and their experiences here in the United States. The first mistake was to refer to them as r "illegals," ''beaners," and "wetbacks." I do not think that this story was written with malicious intent to hurt or offend anyone. It was an honest attempt of self-expression. I can see her honesty, but also her ignorance. You say that "they deserve a medal." Yes they do, but please do not belittle their situation. More than t a medal, they deserve a good job with fair wages and proper working facilities. What good is a medal if one 0 cannot afford a mantle to put it on. And maybe you thought you had it bad at Burger King for one year, but that is all many of us have. -

As Music Editor for the Voice, he had come up with the Consumer Guide format back in 1969. His original format was twenty records, each accorded a single-paragraph review ending with a letter grade. His domain was rock and roll, but his taste and interests ranged widely, so his CGs regularly featured country, blues, folk, reggae, jazz, and later world (especially African), hip-hop, and electronica. Aside from two years off working for Newsday (when his Consumer Guide was published monthly in Creem), the Voice published his columns more-or-less monthly up to 2006, when new owners purged most of the Senior Editors. Since then he's continued writing in the format for a series of Webzines -- MSN Music, Medium, -
What's Your Favorite Colour?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOUR? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOUR?
