Wimbash>>Hartford 2012 June 28, 2012 **For Immediate Release** WimBash>>Hartford 2012 Special Guests Living Colourʼs Vernon Reid and Will Calhoun along with The Fort Washington School of Rock House Band Celebrate the return of WimBash to Sullyʼs Pub & Tiki Bar in Hartford, CT on Saturday, August 18, 2012 as world class bassist Doug Wimbish and NovaSound Studio present WimBash>>Hartford 2012! This yearʼs annual Hartford WimBash is set with a jam packed entire day of music and festivities. Joining Doug will be fellow Grammy Award winning Living Colour bandmates Vernon Reid and Will Calhoun. The Fort Washington, Philadelphia School of Rock House Band will be making a special guest appearance following their acclaimed performance recently at WimBash>>Philadelphia 2012. Spanning musical genres from rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop, latin, reggae, folk and metal to reggaeton, blues, soul, country, ambient, dub-step, industrial and experimental, WimBash>>Hartford 2012 will also feature performances by original Sugar Hill Rhythm Section drummer Keith LeBlanc, singer-songwriter-educator Vinx, Head>>Fake, Jungle>>Funk and Ms. Lauryn Hill band members DJ Rampage Global, drummer James “Biscuit” Rouse, MPCʼist DiViNCi and vocalist Tara Harrison. WimBash “alumni” Adam Falcon, GrindCity Philly, JJX, Jaeme Starchild, Phantasm, The Jean Marx Express, Mashariki Ramey, Thaddeus Black, Persia Sound and DJ Markie Gee will once again grace the WimBash stage bringing a powerhouse line-up of musicians to the City of Hartford! Appearing for the first time at WimBash will be Dougʼs son, Evan, showcasing his vocal talents. Synonymous with Doug Wimbish, Dougʼs personal venture, WimBash, continues to be both a vision and a mission. Starting with a Tack>>Head reunion in 2004 in his hometown of Hartford, CT as a musical get- together for family and friends and as a way to give back to the community, Dougʼs WimBash has become a highly anticipated event, rapidly expanding to cities across the US. and beyond. The annual WimBash, as it was named in 2005, features Doug playing with a number of world-class collaborators, as well as select local bands, providing the opportunity to see musicians, who more often play large venues around the world, in a much more intimate setting. WimBash is unique in that it brings together an eclectic group of music genres under one roof, utilizing the local talent alongside well-known artists while working together with a local foundation or organization in giving back directly to the community. The event has established its name by leveraging the passion and talents of professional musicians by connecting them with groundbreaking programs in music, culture and quality education. WimBash>>Hartford 2012 aims to promote community awareness and involvement in supporting Sullyʼs Pub and Lenaʼs First & Last Pizzeria Restaurant, which hosted the inaugural WimBash. Lenaʼs, in the community for 30 years and Sullyʼs for the last 16 years, face an uncertain future in light of financial difficulties and real estate tax difficulties. Continuing along with Dougʼs support of education and belief in transcending music knowledge from the experienced to the youth, the WimBash>>Hartford 2012 musicians will offer clinics and workshops to the School of Rock participants and local children during the day. Working together with the musicians, production, marketing and media WimBash team, the School of Rock youth will enhance their skills in the many aspects of music and event production as they participate in the production of WimBash>>Hartford 2012. In its eigth year, WimBash is growing in popularity and attracting more and more talented musicians to the NovaSound family. Doug and his production company, NovaSound Studio, have brought the WimBash Music Festival Series on the road while keeping the vision of WimBash as a community and family based, organic, relaxed and educational event. WimBash has redefined how we look at pro-active involvement in making change. In early 2012, Doug partnered up with The Miami Design Preservation League, The School of Rock and The DREAM Project to bring WimBash to the cities of Miami, Philadelphia and Cabarete, Dominican Republic. Five-time Grammy Award winning artist and Dougʼs personal friend, Ms. Lauryn Hill appeared at WimBash>>Hartford 2011 and as a special guest of Dreaminʼ Live and WimBash>>Cabarete 2012, gave a surprise performance to the fans on Cabarete Beach in support of The DREAM Project. WimBash, as part of the 2012 Backbeat Jazzfest Series, returned in May to New Orleans during the famed New Orleans Jazz Fest with special guests Living Colourʼs Corey Glover and NOLAʼs own Khris Royal. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

SEARCH BLOG FLAG BLOG Next Blog» Create Blog | Sign In SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2008 Living Colour Live August 19, 2005 – The Bowery Collection MVD Audio Part of a series of the CBGB OMFUG Masters series, featuring shows recorded at the now-defunct Bowery club , Live August 19, 2005 documents the reunited Living Colour revisiting and paying tribute to the then-endangered (and since closed) stage it often invaded in the 80s. Proceeds go the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (whatever that is). That in itself might be enough to make this worth spending your moolah on, but to say it helps to be a fan of the band is an understatement. The group is in fine form, having not lost a step during the breakup years – singer Corey Glover in particular sounds as powerful as he did in 1988. But if you’re not already into LC’s politically-charged riff metal, this performance is unlikely to appeal, especially given speed demon guitarist Vernon Reid’s tendency to s-t-r- e-t-c-h w-a-y o-u-t, whether the tune warrants it or not. (Sacred Ground didn’t really need to be 13 minutes long, did it?) But for those who do dig it, all the hits are here ( Open Letter to a Landlord , Love Rears Its Ugly Head , Middle Man , Funny Vibe , Cult of Personality ), plus songs that are either deep album cuts or filler, depending on your perspective. Everything is given fiery readings, with sound that’s equal to a good bootleg.

GOODISON: Tell me about your life before you came to New York. TATE: I was born in Dayton, Ohio, and we moved to DC when I was about twelve, so that would have been about 1971, 1972, and that was about the same time I really got interested in music, collecting music, really interested in collecting jazz and rock, and reading music criticism too. It kinda all happened at the same time. I had a subscription to Rolling Stone. I was really into Miles Davis. He was like my god in the 1970s. Miles, George Clinton, Sun Ra, and locally we had a serious kind of band scene going on.

  • Sometimes Going Home for the Weekend to Visit the Folks Is a Little
arts&entertainraent THREAD Sometimes going home for the weekend to visit the folks is a little tense, but you can bet that it’s not as intense as Clyde Owens’ trip home to rural North Carolina in Jonathan Bolt's Threads. Threads, the‘first of two plays this quarter presented by the Dramatic Arts Department, is a family drama about the homecoming of a less-than- successful Hollywood actor to the mill town he grew up in. As with most contemporary dramas, the famlily reunion develops into a series of con frontations and introspection. Director William Glover calls it an old-fashioned, simple play that is as warm and humorous as it is dramatic. Glover, a guest lecturer in the department of Dramatic Art, comes to UCSB as a professional, having directed at the Mark Taper Forum and played the voice of Winston in Disney’s Oliver and Company. His best summation of Threads was, "it’s en tertaining.” "When you go to the theater you go to be en tertained,” said Glover. “Its the opposite of television. TV says ‘don’t get involved’ ... theater says 'please come, please think.’ When you leave, the experience has made you richer.” Threads may not be a great piece of art, but it’s not TV. The play rises from the depths of mere en tertainment by tapping into a raw nerve of human experience: family. The Owens family draws the personal life of playwright Bolt, who knew fir sthand the hardship of working in a textile mill and interacting in a rural family.

Even before the release of their 1988 debut album, Vivid , the band members were actively involved in the Black Rock Coalition, a non-profit organization founded by journalist Greg Tate, producer Konda Mason, and Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid as a means of supporting and sponsoring black rock artists. Consisting of Reid, Will Calhoun (drums), Corey Glover (vocals), and Doug Wimbish (bass)-the latter of whom replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992-Living Color has successfully overcome a number of obstacles faced by black rock artists seeking to break into the commercial music industry. The very release of Vivid by Epic Records was one such success. The album quickly hit number 6 on the Billboard 200 . Soon after, MTV picked up “Cult of Personality,” which was awarded both MTV’s Best New Artist Award and a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989. More than twenty years later, “Cult of Personality” remains immensely popular and has recently featured in the game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , so now you too can enjoy Living Colour’s experience of having to play a really great song over, and over, and over again.
