As a result, traditional methods for estimating the recharge can result in a wide range of derived values. This is evident in the southeastern Mojave Desert, where calculated recharge estimates by previous investigators that range over an order of magnitude (from ~2500 to ~37,000 acre feet per year) are reported. To narrow down this large span of recharge estimates to narrower and more plausible values, this study evaluates the previous recharge estimates in this region, to examine the sources of variability in the reported results and to constrain the recharge estimates based on the hydrologic conditions and the radiocarbon age-dating of spring flows—even without knowledge of the precise subsurface hydrology. The groundwater age and perennial flow characteristics of springs in this study could not be derived from waters sourced solely from local recharge. -

Many of these plants are available at the Garden’s plant sales. Acer macrophyllum—big-leaf maple Seeds and flowers eaten by Evening Grosbeak, Black-headed Grosbeak, goldfinches, and Pine Siskin; Deciduous foliage provides good insect foraging for warblers, vireos, bushtits, and kinglets; Good for shelter and nesting. Alnus rhombifolia—white alder Red-breasted Sapsucker drills for sap; Seeds eaten by Pine Siskin, American Goldfinch, Mourning Dove, Yellow Warbler, Song Sparrow, and Purple Finch; Flowers eaten by Cedar Waxwing; Kinglets, warblers, bushtits, and vireos forage for insects in the foliage. Aesculus californica—California buckeye Hummingbirds like the flowers in April. Aquilegia formosa—western columbine, granny bonnets Attracts hummingbirds, which serve as primary pollinator. Arbutus menziesii—madrone Flowers eaten by Black-headed Grosbeak and Band-tailed Pigeon (May and June); Fruits eaten by Band-tailed Pigeon, Song Sparrow, flickers, grosbeaks, robins, thrushes, and waxwings in November. Arctostaphylos spp.—manzanita Edible fruit attracts many birds, including mockingbirds, robins, and Cedar Waxwing; Low-growing, shrubby manzanita used by California Valley Quail and wren-tits for nesting. A. uva-ursi—kinnickinnick Flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds; Band-tailed Pigeon eats the flowers. Artemisia californica—California sagebrush Good place to look for the Rufous-crowned Sparrow. A. douglasiana—mugwort Provides excellent cover in moist places; Favorite nesting place for Lazuli Bunting and other small birds. Mojave National Preserve—Management Plan for Developed Water Resources CHAPTER 3: AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT Introduction This chapter describes the unique factors that influence water resource management in the Preserve and the resources that could be affected by the implementation of any of the alternatives described in Chapter 2: Alternatives. The resource descriptions provided in this chapter serve as a baseline to compare the potential effects of the management actions proposed in the alternatives. The following resource topics are described in this chapter: • Environmental Setting • Cultural Resources • Water Resources • Wilderness Character • Wildlife Environmental setting and water resources are important for context and are foundational for water resource management, but are not resources that are analyzed for effects. Resource issues that were considered and dismissed from further analysis are listed in Chapter 1: Purpose of and Need for Action and are not discussed further in this EA. A description of the effects of the proposed alternatives on wildlife, cultural resources, and wilderness character is presented in Chapter 4: Environmental Consequences. Environmental Setting The Preserve includes an ecologically diverse yet fragile desert ecosystem consisting of vegetative attributes that are unique to the Mojave Desert, as well as components of the Great Basin and Sonoran Deserts. Topography The topography of the Preserve is characteristic of the mountain and basin physiographic pattern, with tall mountain ranges separated by corresponding valleys filled with alluvial sediments. Primary mountain ranges in the Preserve, from west to east, include the Granite, Kelso, Providence, Clark, New York, and Piute Mountains. Major alluvial valleys include Soda Lake (dry lake bed), Shadow Valley, Ivanpah Valley, Lanfair Valley, and Fenner Valley. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Species of the genus Rotylenchus are ecto- or semi-endo parasites and feed on roots of their host plants. In the study it was found that 50% species of Rotylenchus were monophagous and mostly on plants in the clade Rosids followed by monocots, Asterids and gymnosperms. In general, Rosids and Asterids combined parasitized more than 50% host species followed by monocots. Though food preference was species specific but by and large woody plants were preferred from very primitive families like Magnoliaceae and Lauraceae to representatives of advanced families. Woody plants like pines and others made a substantial contribution in the host range of Rotylenchus. Maximum number of Rotylenchus species harboured plants in families Poaceae (monocots), Rosaceae (Rosids) and Oleaceae (Asterids) followed by Fabaceae, Fagaceae, Asteraceae and Pinaceae. It is, therefore, suggested that agricultural crops should be grown far away from wild vegetation and forest plantations. INTRODUCTION Species of the genus Rotylenchus (Nematoda: Haplolaimidae) are migratory ectoparasites and browse on the surface of roots. The damage caused by them is usually limited to necrosis of penetrated cells (1). However, species with longer stylet penetrate to tissues more deeply and killing more cells and called as semi-endoparasites (2,3). The genus contains 97 nominal species which parasitize on a wide range of wild and cultivated plants worldwide (3). -
