Out of the hottest afternoon sun seems to suit it best for foliage color. Can take a bit of drought, but best with a little summer water. Takes will to pruning. Frost hardy in USDA zone 2. 1g @ $12, 2g @ $22 Rosaceae Rosa glauca red leaf rose Grown as much for its foliage as its flowers this deciduous shrub, to 6 ft tall x 5 ft wide, has glaucous blue foliage and, in June, single pink flowers with white centers. Use native, drought-tolerant plants. Reduce fire danger by creating a defensible space and managing vegetation. Avoid planting trees which will grow to block neighbors' views, interfere with utility lines, become less effective in screening, or create a wildfire hazard. Minimize or eliminate lawn area; do not use artificial turf. Choose plants appropriate to the topography and adapted to our Sunset Climate Zone 16. Protect native oak trees in construction and landscaping; hand-dig trenches within the drip line (canopy) of native oaks. Do not irrigate or place cobblestones under oaks. Choose plants that are compatible with oaks when planting within an oak canopy. Preserve riparian habitat and vegetation, e.g., willows. Control erosion by minimizing hardscape and using plants which can stabilize steep slopes. Do not use invasive plants; avoid poisonous ones. Consider using deer-resistant plants, or create local deer fencing. Fences should be minimized to allow the free movement of wildlife. -

Description Bladderpod is member of the Capparaceae (Caper Family) and native to California (FNA, 2011; Hickman, 1993). It is a spherical shaped evergreen shrub 2-7 feet tall. The stems are profusely branched with corky bark on primary branches and smooth twigs. The alternate leaf is compound with petioles supporting three leaflets. The flowers are perfect, with green sepals half the length of the inflorescence, yellow petals and six stamens. The fruits are inflated capsules containing 5 – 25 seeds, which are are obovoid, dark brown and smooth. The three subspecies are differentiated by the shape of the capsules. P. arborea var angustata capsules are narrowly fusiform. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968.
