The quest Ifor knowledge. When is enough too much? Faustus, a postmodern musical by Kirk Smith adapted from the 16th-century trag- edy by Christopher Marlowe, brings a new light to a dark old tale. With an excellent cast and the solid direction of Bonnie Cul- lum, Faustus made its world public pre- miere on April 6 at Planet Theatre. One couldn't help but wonder if this wasn't how Jesus Christ, Superstar got its start; Faustus has the dynamics and appeal to stay around for a long time. Smith and musical director Sergio R. Samayoa weave 17 songs with a new-rock beat into the tale of Dr. Faustus, his loyal assistant Wagner, Lucifer and the Devil's legmen Mephistopheles and Beelzebub. One of those songs may someday bloom into an "I don't Know How to Love Him" or a "Memories"; for now, their modernness fleshes out and balances the Olde English dialogue Smith adapts from Marlowe's book The Tragica/ History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus. With respect to this speedy expansion, the purpose of this study is to investigate current developments, and to distinguish features of Taiwanese belly dance. The method adopted is literature analysis: a large number of Internet news items were collected to capture the trend of belly dancing in Taiwan. This study concludes that belly dance in Taiwan is primarily presented as: an exercise that is beneficial for health; widely accessible and partially embedded in local life; an exercise for all age groups and genders; a blend of multiple cultural elements; outstanding dancers acclaimed as the pride of Taiwan. The representation showed that the development of belly dance was influenced by the Taiwanese social background. Within the Taiwanese cultural landscape of meanings, belly dance moves between the exotic and the local. This study argues that belly dance is better described as “localised-exoticism” in Taiwan. The study begins by examining the formation of social dancing into a specific brand of commercial entertainment in association with the popularity of Vernon and Irene Castle as social dancing entertainers around 1914. The Castles branded social dancing as a modern form of leisure through their exhibitions of social dancing in public, through products that were marketed with their name, in a book of illustrations for “Modern Dancing” (1914), and through Whirl of Life (1915), a film they produced about the origination of their romance and popularity as dancing entertainers.

    An Interdisciplinary Conference June 2 – 3, 2020 Minneapolis, MN Conference Presenters and Abstracts Hosted by The School of Arts and Media, University of Salford, UK Organized by Dr. Kirsty Fairclough, School of Arts and Media, University of Salford Kristen Zschomler, Minneapolis-based historian and writer, Sound History, LLC Chris Aguilar-Garcia Independent Scholar, USA Dirty Mind and Controversy: Creating a Queer Icon Sex and sexuality were key elements of the Prince persona and catalog from the release of his debut album and first single, “Soft and Wet.” While his early releases were essentially heteronormative and barely transgressive, particularly at the tail end of the sexually liberated disco era, in 1980’s “Dirty Mind,” we see the beginnings of a queer sensibility. Beyond what critic Ken Tucker termed a “liberating lewdness” in his Rolling Stone review, the album also included Prince’s first songs of outright social commentary with “Uptown,” and “Partyup.” In “Uptown,” Prince is pegged as gay because of his clothes and hair, and in “Partyup,” the 30- minute album closes out to the defiant chant “You’re gonna have to fight your own damn war / ‘Cause we don’t wanna fight no more!” A year later, in the title track to 1981’s Controversy, Prince ponders, “Am I straight or gay?,” a bold question at a time fellow Queer icons Elton John and Freddie Mercury were not publicly out. In “Sexuality,” Prince goes on to proclaim the Second Coming not as the return of Christ, but the dawn of an “anything goes” sexual revolution free of segregation. Within the framework of these two definitive albums, Prince solidly planted himself in the pantheon of Queer icons, laying the groundwork for a blockbuster career that relentlessly defied social and industry norms.
