Piracy Or Productivity: Unlawful Practices in Anime Fansubbing
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Aaltodoc Publication Archive Aalto-yliopisto Teknillinen korkeakoulu Informaatio- ja luonnontieteiden tiedekunta Tietotekniikan tutkinto-/koulutusohjelma Teemu Mäntylä Piracy or productivity: unlawful practices in anime fansubbing Diplomityö Espoo 3. kesäkuuta 2010 Valvoja: Professori Tapio Takala Ohjaaja: - 2 Abstract Piracy or productivity: unlawful practices in anime fansubbing Over a short period of time, Japanese animation or anime has grown explosively in popularity worldwide. In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. Keywords: Japanese animation, anime, fansub, copyright, piracy Tiivistelmä Piratismia vai tuottavuutta: laittomat toimintatavat animen fanikäännöksissä Japanilaisen animaation eli animen suosio maailmalla on lyhyessä ajassa kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti. -

1 PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON KAMI-CON CHARACTERS PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON... Shio and Kosho, with the help of YOU the congoers, defeated the alien forces and grounded Shoyu on planet Vidya—a world where the physics, landmarks, and inhabitants have developed into something remarkably similar to the video games we are familiar with here on Earth. However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Shio and Kosho recruited Ryu from Street Fighter, and Vault Boy from Fallout. These heroes met on the battlefield known asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate! It was truly an epic match—and in the end, it was Shio and Kosho who proved victorious! His coup having been thwarted, Shoyu agreed to team back up with the congirls to continue their journey through space toward World Conquest! Everything should be fine now as long as they don’t all, say, crash their starship into a mysterious beach planet… right? From Manga to Comic: Visual Language in Translation
LaPlante From Manga to Comic: Visual Language in Translation A Senior Honors Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with distinction in Japanese in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University By Thomas LaPlante The Ohio State University June 2008 Project Advisor: Professor Richard Torrance, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures 1 From Manga to Comic: Visual Language in Translation There are many books, essays, and studies about the translation of prose literature, poetry, and technical and legal documents; each with techniques, philosophies, problems and solutions appropriate to its particular area of concentration. Very little has been written, however, about the translation of comics. This may be because many feel that comics lack the cultured subtlety of prose or poetry, or the practical relevance of technical or legal documents, and hence are not worthy of formal study. Or perhaps this is due to the general perception that comics are only a textual narrative accompanied by pictures, so that when a translation is made, it is satisfactory to treat the work as though it were simply a standard work of prose. But this is not the case. Comics are no more simply a work of prose than they are simply a collection of unrelated pictures. Comics, under the umbrella of sequential art, constitute their own special medium with their own vocabulary, conventions, and use of symbols. They present their own unique problems to the translator, not least of which is the fact that the translator must successfully bridge the gap between not just two languages, but three: present in every form of sequential art is an elusive visual language, which is at once universal and provincial – and for which there are no dictionaries.
