News Sheet Update from our , James Lee

It’s a joy to have the opportunity to make my first contribution to our church news sheet this week. It’s hard to believe it’s already been nearly two months since we moved up from London! We’ve been taking opportunities to get to know the local area and starting to get to know folks across the Benefice. We’ve felt really loved and welcomed by everyone, which we’re really thankful for! This week, we’re continuing our walk through the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 – and this week is the first of two ‘double-headers’: Patience and Kindness. I wonder what comes to mind when you think of those two words? For me, they seem like nice, peaceful- sounding words at first, but as I’ve thought about them this week in preparing my sermon, I’ve been reminded how difficult and challenging they are! I think this is especially true of patience – it doesn’t take much looking around to realise that we live in a very impatient society, and that can be just as true of us in the church as well. It certainly affects me, whether it’s getting frustrated at slow-moving traffic or getting cross at my mobile phone when it takes a few seconds longer to load up than I’d like it to! Yet patience (as with all the other aspects of the fruit of the Spirit) is no ‘optional extra’ for the Christian life, so it’ll be great to spend some time thinking about how we might grow in patience – and in kindness – as we meet together this Sunday. We’ll be taking some time to look at what the Bible as a whole has to say about patience and kindness – how we see the patience and kindness of God at work in the Gospel and how that might connect to the patience and kindness we long to see increasing in our lives. I’m looking forward to unpacking this together!

James (PS: see if you can spot the previous three parts of the fruit of the Spirit in the first two paragraphs!)

Covid-19 Restrictions -Update for our Churches (guidelines are to be reviewed again in a few weeks) The following guidelines for our church services have been made following discussions between Phil and the churchwardens and we encourage all of our church family to adhere to them. ⚫ Facemasks are encouraged to be worn whilst moving around inside the church building. It will then be personal choice whether to keep them on when seated. ⚫ Singing is to be allowed in church. You can sing with or without wearing your facemask. ⚫ Bibles will be available to use in the pews. ⚫ You no longer have to book in to attend a service, but we will ask you to sign in still or use the QR Code. ⚫ Hand-sanitizer will be made available when entering and leaving the building and we would encourage you to use it. ⚫ At Stanton and Risley churches, the sets of pews next to the church side walls will remain as socially distanced seating. The two middle sections of seating and those at the back are no longer re- stricted seating. The seating at the Gateway will basically stay as it is. ⚫ The collection plate can be brought forward to the service officiant for thanksgiving. ⚫ Communion will continue to be carried out as it has over the previous weeks. We are not offering the Common cup as yet. ⚫ The one way system in and out of our buildings will no longer apply. ⚫ We are intending to start serving refreshments from 29th August and reintroduce our flower rotas.

Church Service Times - From Sunday 5th September 2021 The PCC have decided, for a trial period of 6 months, to adopt the following service times in the Bene- fice, from the beginning of September this year. The new times from September 5th will be:  9am at Dale Abbey  10:30am Stanton by Dale  4pm Risley There are a number of positive reasons for trialling these changes—but changes they are, and change is not always easy. Please listen out for further details over coming weeks and if you would like to discuss any of these changes with me, I’d be really pleased to do so.

Confirmations and Baptisms on Sunday Afternoon, November 14th 2021

We pray that Sunday November 14th will be a very special day in the life of our Benefice! We are holding a service of baptism and confirmation, with the of Derby – Libby Lane, at 4pm on that date, at St Michael and All Angels, Stanton by Dale, and followed by refreshments at the Old School. More information to follow in the coming weeks! We invite all those who are trusting Jesus as Saviour and Lord and who have not been baptised to come and be bap- tised- in obedience to Jesus’ command, and to publicly witness to His saving grace. In the Church of England, Confir- mation is also a key marker in the Christian life. Confirmation is the ancient and Anglican practice of laying on of hands by a bishop. Candidates give their testimony and publicly profess their faith. They ‘confirm’ the promises made at their baptism (often on their behalf by Parents and godparents if baptised as a child). Confirmation also signifies adult mem- bership of the Church of England. There are of course a range of circumstances people find themselves in. Please consider, if you are trusting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and:

 you have not been baptised and confirmed, please be baptised and confirmed

 you are regularly taking communion but have not been baptised, please be baptised and consider confirma- tion too

 you were baptised as a child, please come for confirmation

Whatever circumstance you find yourself in, please do talk to James or myself about these opportunities. We would love to talk to you. We are letting you know with plenty of time to give people opportunity to chat and pray things through, and to enable us to run some great baptism and confirmation preparation sessions. There is more infor- mation about baptism on our website—follow this link: https://sdrchurches.org.uk/explore/#BAPTISMS Please be praying that the Name of Jesus would be honoured and glorified by all that happens at our service on this date! Phil

Qualified First Aider If you are a Qualified First Aider (and are happy to admit to it...we are only asking out of interest….for now ….) would you mind letting either Phil or Elaine, know, just so that we are aware in case there is a need to call on someone. Thank you.

All Age Worship - The Tenth Sunday after Trinity ‘And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.’ Colossians 3: 14

Welcome

Preparation Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Lord, direct our thoughts, and teach us to pray. Lift up our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Song: Crown Him With Many Crowns

Saying Sorry to God God our Father, we come to you in sorrow for our sins. For turning away from you, and ignoring your will for our lives; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. For behaving just as we wish, without thinking of you; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. For failing you by what we do, and think and say; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. For letting ourselves be drawn away from you by temptations in the world about us; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

For living as if we were ashamed to belong to your Son; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Blessed is the Lord, for he has heard the voice of our prayer; therefore shall our hearts dance for joy and in our song will we praise our God. Amen
