Sjarlene Thom (University of Stellenbosch) Over the years there have been various attempts to make sense of the Epodes as a collection, as well as of individual poems.1 Scholars who have focussed on the collection as a whole have tried generally grouping the poems according to metre2 or to subject matter into either different areas of criticism or different categories of invective.3 The subsequent scholarly debate centred on arguments why individual groups were identified and why a specific poem should fall into a specific group. My personal reaction to these attempts to structure the collection according to groups is rather negative for the following simple reason: too many persuasive alternatives are possible. No musical composition could at one and the same time be described for instance as a sonata, a suite or a prelude and fugue. If a piece of music displays characteristics of all these musical forms, a broader organisational principle has to be found to accommodate the individual sections. In the same way then – since so many different possible ways have been identified in which to pack out various groups of Epodes – it seems to make more sense to look at the Epodes as a unit in which a variety of cross-references or, to continue the musical analogy, variations on a theme, all support a central statement. There have also been scholars who focused on individual poems who have come up with striking or even ingenious individual interpretations, but more often than not they then ignored or discounted the larger unit in which the poems functioned.

Read Full Biography Overview Biography Discography Songs Credits Related Share on Artist Biography by Greg Prato Throughout his long and winding solo career, guitarist Robin Trower has had to endure countless comparisons to Jimi Hendrix due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix's bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style. Born on March 9, 1945 in Catford, England, Trower spent the early '60s playing guitar in various London-based outfits, the most successful being the R&B group the Paramounts, who specialized mostly in covers, but managed to issue several singles between 1963 and 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that Trower received his big break, however, when he joined Procol Harum. The group had just scored a worldwide smash hit with "A Whiter Shade of Pale," but the only problem was that the band's leader, singer/pianist Gary Brooker, didn't have a proper band to back him. Brooker was previously a bandmate of Trower's in the Paramounts, and offered the guitar slot in his new fast-rising project to his old friend. As a result, Trower appeared on such Procol Harum classics as 1967's Procol Harum, 1968's Shine on Brightly, 1969's A Salty Dog, 1970's Home (which spawned the popular Trower tune "Whiskey Train"), and 1971's Broken Barricades. While Procol Harum helped launch Trower's career, the guitarist realized there was limited space for his guitar work and eventually left for a solo career.

It is now more widely-known that Scotland’s ‘national bard’ was preparing to travel to Jamaica in 1786 to work as what he calls a ‘negro driver’ on a slave plantation. He hoped to escape the hardships of the life of a tenant farmer, as well as the remonstrance of the irate father of one pregnant Jean Armour. The couple had been secretly betrothed, though her father did not approve. The publication of Burns’ first collection Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (1786), known as the ‘Kilmarnock edition’ from its place of publication, was intended to raise funds for the voyage; he reports that his very first purchase was the nine guinea fare across the Atlantic. However, Burns’ voyage was continuously postponed, and in the interim the success of ‘Kilmarnock’ continued to grow. Soon, the ‘plough driver’ was able to avoid the post of ‘negro driver’ by pursuing instead literary fame as a ‘quill driver’ in Enlightenment Edinburgh. As a result of this episode, the figure of Robert Burns has provided a focal point for modern attempts to recover the long-obscured memory of Scottish connections with black Atlantic issues.

The original English libretto was by Arthur Matthison; it was translated into Italian by Giuseppe Zaffira; the music was by Michael William Balfe. The opera was first performed June 11, 1874 at Drury Lane in London. IL TALISMANO was originally written as an English opera in three acts, to the libretto of Arthur Matthison, based upon the chief episode of Sir Walter Scott’s “Talisman.” The talisman proper, however, does not come into the story at all, nor is Saladin introduced except as an obscure Emir Sheerkohf. Mr. Matthison originally intended to call the work The Knight of the Leopard, but the association with Scott’s novel, overrode all other considerations. The first two Acts and Scene I of the third Act take place within a day in 1191, during the wars of the Crusades. Scenes II and III of the third Act take place some months later in 1192, as the English Crusaders prepare to leave for their home land. The librettist, however, had separated these last scenes into a fourth act, and this is how it is displayed here.
