2010-2011 SHORTER HAWKS Basketball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 11 DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson is in his fourth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics, having set a clear course for making Shorter one of the top athletic programs in the country.

Peterson has made the desire for overall excellence the cornerstone of Hawks’ Athletics.

His decisions and expertise have produced a wave of firsts in a number of programs while also allowing Shorter University to achieve several banner finishes in the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics (NACDA) Director’s Cup, including a program-best 11th-place finish following the 2009-10 academic year.

Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year for 2009-10.

Numerous sports have reached unprecedented levels of success under the direction of Peterson’s leadership.

Since 2007-08, Shorter has captured 17 conference championships and won seven national titles, two team and five individual.

Volleyball won its first Southern States Athletic Conference title in 2007. Men’s cross country captured back-to-back SSAC championships in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams qualified for the NAIA Championships in Vancouver, Wash., the first time both teams made the trip to nationals in the same year.

Softball has made four straight appearances in the NAIA National Championship, winning three straight SSAC crowns from 2007-2009 before turning in a program-best fifth-place finish at the 2010 National Championship.

Football captured its first-ever Mid-South Conference title in 2008, subsequently making its first trip to the NAIA Football Championship Series.

Men’s and women’s track and field have combined to win five Mid-South championships in the last three years while each team has also posted consecutive top 10 finishes in the country. Women’s basketball completed a third straight 20-win season in 2009-10 - the first time that has happened in program history - and advanced to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship for the first time since 2001.

Shorter has burst onto the national scene over the last four years, capturing a number of individual and team national championships.

Montagious Brown won the school’s first-ever individual national championship in 2008 by taking first in the high jump at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Justyna Mudy followed with the school’s first-ever female national crown in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track Championships.

Mudy then won three individual national championships in 2009-10, bringing home the 2009 NAIA Cross Country title before

Shorter Cheerleading enters the 2010-11 academic year as back-to-back national champions having brought the school its first-ever team national championships by winning the All-Girl II Intermediate title at the NCA Cheer Nationals in 2009 and 2010.

Peterson continues to push Shorter into the national spotlight. In January 2008, the NAIA announced that Peterson, Shorter University and Rome-Floyd County had been awarded the bid for the 2008 and 2009 NAIA Football National Championship to be held at the Hawks’ home football facility, .

Because of the rampant success of the 2008 and 2009 championship games, Barron Stadium will once again serve as the host site for the 2010 NAIA Football National Championship.

Not only does Peterson expect excellence on the field and court, but he does so in the classroom as well. In 2009-10, Shorter placed 111 athletes on their respective Academic All-Conference teams while also boasting 23 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, a list that included the 2009-10 Southern States Athletic Conference Female Honor Student-Athlete in Whitni Tucker, the second straight year that a Shorter athlete has garnered that award after Becca Thomas won the honor in 2008-09.

Prior to taking the helm of the Hawks’ athletic program, Peterson served three years in the position of recruiting coordinator for the Shorter University football team.

He came to Shorter from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he served as head coach. In 2005, Peterson led Mount Paran to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the state finals while being named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Coach of the Year.

Prior to coaching, Peterson was President and Co-Founder of Horizon Medical Products (HMP), a publicly traded corporation headquartered in Atlanta.

Peterson played collegiate football at Texas Lutheran College where he was a member of the 1974 NAIA national championship team coached by the legendary Jim Wacker.

He finished college at Florida State University where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in Accounting.

Peterson’s father, Bill Sr., is credited with bringing the professional passing game to college football. Bill Sr. coached at Florida State from 1960-70, at Rice University in 1971 and for the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1972-73.

Peterson and his wife, Joanna, have four children: Will, Molly, Ben and Sam. Will was a senior tight end for the 2008 Mid-South Western Division champion Shorter football team and Ben is currently a freshman offensive lineman on the 2010 squad.

DEPTH, ATHLETICISM AND TOUGHNESS – traits all basketball coaches dream about having in a team.

When the Shorter University Hawks hit the floor for the 2010- 11 season, head coach Chad Warner believes his team has those qualities and more, as Shorter tries to take the next step towards the national spotlight.

“I like our team and I like our guys,” said Warner, who begins his fourth season and will direct a team that returns three starters from last year’s squad that posted a 17-13 record. “I enjoy being with them. If we can truly be a team, who knows what’s out there for us.”

Warner fully understands that despite having the ingredients to make noise on a national level, the Hawks must find the right combinations to make it work.

“I feel like we have more athleticism and more depth than we’ve ever had since I’ve been here,” said Warner. “We also have a solid group of guys who played heavy minutes last year, but any time you bring in seven new guys, there’s a meshing process that has to take place. They haven’t proved anything yet, so there’s an unknown there.

“We tried to get players who play tough and I think we found them,” the coach added. “We have guys who can do multiple things and hopefully that gives us advantages.”

Perhaps the most notable advantage Shorter has is the player who Senior Marqise Wright pieced together one of the best single made the biggest splash in his first year with the Hawks last season seasons in men’s basketball history in 2009-10, leading the – senior All-American Marqise Wright. nation and setting a school record with 19 double-doubles.

Rounding out the roster are walk-ons Justin Gentry, a 5-9 junior from Trion, and Philip Mullins, a 5-10 freshman guard from Woodbury, Tenn., who begins his college career after serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Shorter expects an addition to the roster when junior transfer Brandon Chase of Baton Rouge, La., joins the team at the semester break, but will be without the services of junior transfer and sharpshooter Shasta Scott of Macon, who is out for season with an injury.

The more the better, especially considering that Shorter will once again have to battle in a tough Southern States Athletic Conference that has become even tougher via expansion. For the first time, the SSAC will be split into East and West Divisions.

“I think the SSAC is the toughest conference in the country,” said Tyler Watkins epitomizes the toughness that head coach Chad Warner. Warner calls for. The rugged senior figures to bring energy off the bench once again for the Hawks.

It is also the first time in that same time span that Shorter has posted three straight seasons of 15 or more wins.

Last season, Warner’s Hawks raced out to a 9-0 start, the best start in program history, on their way to 17 wins. Shorter climbed as high as No. 21 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll in 2009-10, the highest ranking achieved during Warner’s tenure. Shorter advanced to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals in Warner’s first season and in 2008-09, posted a 10-8 record in SSAC play, good enough for a No. 4 seed and the best SSAC finish in program history.

In just three seasons, Warner has coached two NAIA All-Americans, five All-SSAC selections, one SSAC Newcomer of the Year, 14 Academic All-Conference picks and two NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Four of Warner’s players have gone on to sign professional contracts overseas.

Warner came to Shorter in 2007-08 from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, one of NCAA III’s most successful basketball programs, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. At Hampden-Sydney, Warner was involved in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, strength and conditioning, scouting and player development.

Warner helped guide the 2006-07 Tigers to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship, the school’s 10th conference title and seventh in the previous 11 years. That year, Hampden-Sydney advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship.

His previous coaching experience includes two years as an assistant coach at The College of William & Mary under accomplished head coach Tony Shaver and a previous stint at Hampden-Sydney in 2003-04, when the team ascended to the national No. 1 ranking and captured another ODAC championship.

Warner spent the 2002-03 season as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, under legendary head coach Jim Harrick. He spent the previous four years as associate head basketball coach at the Darlington School in Rome.

Warner graduated from UGA in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. At Georgia, Warner played basketball for head coach Hugh Durham. In high school at Darlington, Warner was an All-Area and All-State performer on the hardwood while also running track, where he finished second in the state in the 800 meters during his senior year.

Warner and his wife, Karin, have three children, Aly (4), Caroline (3) and Jack (9 months).

In three seasons as Shorter University head coach, Chad Warner has seen four of his former players sign contracts to play professional basketball overseas. The Hawks have one of the top programs in arguably the best NAIA men’s basketball conference in the country and Warner, along with his assistant coaching staff consisting of Bryce Brickhouse and Tyler Murray, have a proven track record of identifying and developing top talent.

Jerrenda Wheeler

Wheeler, a native of Gainesville, Ga., is the latest former Hawk to sign a professional deal. After averaging 14 points and six assists for the Hawks during the 2009-10 season, the 6-foot-2 combo guard signed to play with BK Inter Bratislava of the Slovakian Extraliga - the country’s top league - and is off to a fantastic start.

Through Inter Bratislava’s first eight games in the 2010-11 season, Wheeler was leading the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game while also pulling down 4.6 boards and dishing out 4.1 assists per game. Wheeler poured in a season-high 31 points in 38 minutes in Inter’s 89-88 win over Komarno.

Former Shorter University standout Jerrenda Wheeler, a 2009-10 All- Southern States Athletic Conference pick and Defensive Player of the Year candidate, has gotten off to a hot start for BK Inter Bratislava of the top professional basketball league in Slovakia, the Extraliga.

42 2010-2011 SHORTER HAWKS Basketball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com Tomas Pranciliauskas

(Left) A former All-American for the Hawks in 2007-08 and a two-time SSAC All-Conference selection, Pranciliauskas returned to his native Vilnius, Lithuania to lace up for Sakalai Vilnius where he played in 29 games last season and averaged 5.5 points.

Pranciliauskas, who transferred to Shorter after two years at Pepperdine University, scored in double figures five times for his professional club, including a season-high 21 points with the help of 4 of 4 shooting from beyond the arc in a win over Suduva.

Qavotstaraj Waddell

(Right) The 6-11 Waddell signed to play professional ball in Romania after ending his career with the Hawks. Waddell, who transferred to Shorter from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga for his senior season in 2008-09, averaged nearly eight points and eight rebounds per game to go along with 2.3 blocks per outing.

Mantas Leonavicius

(Left) Leonavicius, who came to Shorter from Hofstra University for his final two seasons of eligibility, is continuing his basketball career in Italy with Basket San Vincenzo, a club located in the Italian region of Tuscany.

So far in his first season with the club, Leonavicius, who was an SSACAll- Academic selection in 2009-10, is putting up just under eight points and nine rebounds per game.

2010-2011 SHORTER HAWKS Basketball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 43 2009-2010 RECAP

Shorter’s 2009-10 season a true roller-coaster ride

It was a good season for the Shorter men’s basketball team. Of this, head coach Chad Warner is certain.

A record-setting start, 17 wins, All-Conference and All- Academic players; the Hawks can look back with pride as to what they accomplished in 2009-10 despite having to replace the entire starting lineup from the previous season.

But in the wake of Shorter’s season-ending loss, a heartbreaking three-point setback to Auburn-Montgomery in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, Warner couldn’t help but have those “what could have been” thoughts.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about it,” Warner said when asked to reflect over the ups - a remarkable 13-2 mark at home - and downs - winners of just two of 12 road games - of the just-concluded season in which the Hawks finished with a solid 17-13 record.

“We are the example of a good team, but not a great team,” he said. “We’ve made tremendous strides from where we were when we started, to where we are now. But taking the next step to that next level is harder and it takes a bigger commitment.”

Unlike the 2009-10 campaign, when Shorter was faced with the loss of eight players and its top six scorers, the Hawks and Warner will have a much better foundation on which they can make that bigger commitment.

Three starters will return for the 2010-11 season, including last year’s SSAC Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference Crichton College transfer Marqise Wright turned in one of the selection, Marqise Wright. best individual seasons in recent memory, posting a school record 19 double-doubles while averaging a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds per game. 50 2010-2011 SHORTER HAWKS Basketball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Welcome to the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total edu- cational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institu- tion, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing Sport with Innovative Change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

NAIA at a Glance

The NAIA consists of nearly 300 member colleges and universities, holds 23 national championships, has serviced over 650,000 student-athletes, was the first organization to include black colleges and women in its national championships and is the first to develop a system-wide character initiative with substansive programming. 2010-11 Shorter University Men’s Basketball Schedule
