Good Luck Hawks! Here’s to another successful season!

Dwarf House by Chick-Fil-A® 264 Shorter Avenue Rome, Ga. (706) 232-9233 8 Hawk Soccer 2009 Shorter College 9 Message from the Director of Athletics Dear Hawk Family:

It is my great pleasure to welcome in another exciting season of Shorter College men’s soccer.

A year has passed since last season, and our Hawks and Lady Hawks athletic teams have completed what is arguably the best year in the history of Shorter College Athletics. As always, our goal is for Shorter to be recognized as an outstanding option for student-athletes who are looking for academic excel- lence, spiritual growth, and a challenging athletic experience. In conjunction with this goal, we have been blessed with the best in both student-athletes and coaches; whether in competition, in the classroom or in the community.

During the past year, thirteen of our teams finished the year in the NAIA Top-25 for their respective sport, and at the conclusion of the year, Shorter placed 33rd in the nation out of nearly 300 NAIA member schools in the NACDA Director’s Cup. In addition, we graduated a record number of Bill Peterson student-athletes and celebrated our first team national championship. Most Director of Athletics importantly, we continued to see great growth among both our coaches and athletics in their Christian walk of faith.

In just its fourth year, our football program won its first-ever conference championship and earned its first berth into the NAIA National Playoffs. We also saw our highly respected head football coach, Phil Jones, receive the prestigious FCA National Coach of the Year Award.

Women’s player Whitni Tucker was named the national winner of the Emil S. Liston Award, an annual award presented by the NAIA and Daktronics recognizing a male and female junior basketball player based on scholar- ship, character and playing ability.

Softball standout Becca Thomas garnered the SSAC’s most prestigious honor, the 2008-2009 SSAC Female Honor Stu- dent-Athlete of the Year. Along with men’s soccer player Kyle Timberlake, Becca was also honored as one of Shorter’s two Student-Athletes of the Year.

Justyna Mudy won our second individual national championship in the last two years and became the first Lady Hawk to ever win a national championship.

Our student-athletes and coaches continued to shine recording all-time highs in the following areas: 75 graduating seniors, 74 all-academic and all-conference selections, 16 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, six conference championships and one national championship and eight Coach of the Year selections. What a year!

While we are proud of what has accomplished in the 2008-2009 school year, both our coaches and student-athletes are even more excited about what the future may bring. The growth and accomplishments of the past decade have put this program in position to move into the most successful era ever of Shorter Athletics. For that to happen, it will require a great effort on all of our parts as well as a tremendous amount of teamwork. It will also take great faith, unbelievable enthusiasm and a champion’s perseverance. Nonetheless, I am confident it can be done.

We appreciate your continued support and we look forward to another exciting year in 2009-2010.

Go Hawks!

Six seniors headline an experienced side as Shorter looks to build on last year’s success

By Jim O’Hara Shorter College Feature Writer

There is little doubt that the 2008 season provided the Shorter College men’s soccer team its most heralded year.

A first-ever conference championship, its first All- American honoree and a head coach who not only was considered the best soccer coach in the conference, but the top coach in every men’s sport – the honors came in a year no one expected the Hawks to fare quite so well.

Looking at what the Hawks have done and what they are capable of in 2009, no one is looking past them.

“The [2008] season definitely put us on the map nationally and in the NAIA,” said Hawks head coach Josh Severns, who begins his fifth season at the helm after leading the team to the program’s first Southern States Athletic Con- ference regular season championship last fall. “It also put us on the level with the top conference teams.

Joining Dickerson are fellow junior midfielders John Calderwood of Lanark, Scotland, who was red-shirted last year and has prepared for the new year by playing in the NPSL, Jamie Malcolm of Hiram and Elliot Livesey of Preston, England, who scored two goals and handed out two assists during an injury-plagued season last fall.

Shorter’s sophomore class tasted immediate success with the program as freshmen and are geared up to do it again.

Back in 2009 are sophomore goalkeepers John Paletar of Bel Air, Md. and Michael Bruce of East Kilbride, Scot- land, who shared time in goal for Shorter in 2008 with Peletar holding a 2.18 goals-against-average with 40 saves and Bruce posting a 1.61 GAA with 27 saves.

“We feel that the position of goalkeeper is one we’ll get better at,” said Severns. “I feel they can be very dominant.”

Stuart Johnson Owner 40 Hawk Soccer 2009 Shorter College 41 Hawk Nation: A Championship Investment Dear Shorter Friend,

Incredible things are happening on the Hill, especially in the Athletic Department, as we continue to grow and bring championships home. I encourage you to “Catch the Spirit” and be a part of Shorter’s future.

First of all, thank you for your interest in Hawk Nation. This program is designed to help off-set athletic operating costs, assist in growth and development of our student athletes, and to promote school spirit both on and off the Hill.

Hawk Nation is destined for success, and I hope you will help jump start this wonderful new program by joining now!

Over the past few years, Shorter Athletics has reached new milestones, from winning conference and national championships to being nation- ally ranked within the NAIA. In addition to those achievements on the Rachel Rogers ’04 playing field, Shorter Athletics has established itself as a Christian athletic Director of Athletic Development program.

Shorter coaches strive to put Christ first, emphasizing their role in helping develop Christian young men and women. While Hawks athletics is committed to excellence, its true purpose is to serve as a platform to share the gospel.

Your PRIDE and support of Shorter Athletics demonstrates to others what an outstanding institution we have. Your commitment to Hawk Nation makes an immediate impact on the lives of our student-athletes and the future success of Shorter Athletics!

I look forward to receiving your commitment and welcoming you into the Hawk Nation family.

Go Hawks!

www.GoShorterHawks.com 42 Hawk Soccer 2009 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and develop- ment of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institu- tion, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmo- sphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics pro- gram is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

NAIA at a glance

• Nearly 300 member colleges and universities

• 23 national championships

• 650,000 student-athletes over the years

• First to include black colleges and students in championships

• First to include women in national championships

• First to develop system-wide character initiative with substantive programming
