THE F-35 IS NOT THE ANSWER “Air Power is like Poker. A second-best hand is like none at all – it will cost you dough and win you nothing.” Lt Gen George C. Kenney From the earliest days just over 100 years ago, fighting from and in the air environment has required some essential elements of the third dimension to be understood and exploited for success. These have dictated who will win in the short term and provided key pointers for who will win in the longer term. Evolving technology, industrial capability and commitment to study of this additional battle space for warfare have wrought quite rapid change in some of the basics regarding conduct on the land and sea battlefields: bearing in mind that the surface below eventually still needs to be controlled for final victory to be won. Early in WW1, air elements were primarily focussed on providing “eyes beyond the horizon” for the Army but in a few short years became an integral element of all arms employment in significant operations with a “land solution” in mind. The battle around Cambrai in 1918 became a classic for tactical air employment, and closely envisages employment opportunities for an aircraft structured with F-35 type capabilities in mind. As part of this changed focus on attack from the air, Gotha and Zeppelin raids on London and some semi-strategic raids into Germany caused many to ponder the need for an aerial defence force to protect home areas then seen as becoming increasingly vulnerable. Between the world wars, this prompted active contemplation of the need for some priority for Air Defence or Control of the Air capability with the likes of Douhet proclaiming that the bomber would always get through. -

The Iran-Iraq War Involved the Use of a Wide Range of Air Defense, Air, Helicopter, and Missile Systems
XIII. THE AIR AND MISSILE WARS AND WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION 13.0 The Air and Missile Wars The Iran-Iraq War involved the use of a wide range of air defense, air, helicopter, and missile systems. It also was the first war in modern times to involve the extensive use of chemical weapons. Unlike the Arab-Israeli conflicts of 1973 and 1982, however, Iran and Iraq often lacked the strategic and tactical sophistication to make effective use of the technology they obtain, to integrate it into an effective combat force, and to exercise effective command and control. The key lessons and issues raised by the war may be summarized as follows: • Air power had an important impact upon the war, but it never had the major strategic or tactical impact that the number and quality of the weapons on each side should have permitted. • Neither Iran or Iraq were able to make effective use of their air control and warning and C3I assets, and medium or heavy surface-to-air missiles. Both were forced to relay on shorter range systems, in part because of design problems and a lack of low altitude coverage, but large because of problems in technology transfer. • Both Iran and Iraq made heavy use of anti-aircraft guns for point defense, area coverage, and as anti-infantry weapons. This follows a broad pattern in the Third World forces and deserves careful study in the West. • Both Iran and Iran made heavy use of manportable and light surface-to-air weapons. Iraq, in particular, came to rely more on light surface-to-air missiles than medium or heavy systems -- in large part because the lighter systems were easier to operate and did not require integration into a complex air control and warning and battle management system. -

Journal of Aeronautical History Paper No. 2018/03 The 1957 Defence White Paper The Cancelled Projects Tony Buttler SUMMARY This paper, which is based on a presentation to a seminar on the 1957 Defence White Paper, describes the aircraft and engine projects that were cancelled as a direct result of the policies announced in the White Paper. It also describes a number of aircraft projects that were cancelled or on which development ceased in the mid-1950s. These are often identified as casualties of the White Paper, although that was not the case. One consequence of the 1957 White Paper was the decision by Hawkers to develop the P.1127 after it became clear that there would not be a British market for the P.1121 supersonic air superiority strike fighter. The Harrier was developed from the P.1127, which changed the face of high performance combat aircraft operations and is one of the most important of all developments in UK aviation history. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper is based on a presentation to a seminar on the 1957 Defence White Paper (1) (DWP) on 24 October 2017 by the Historical Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society. It considers the airframe and engine projects which were terminated by the White Paper, but first I would like to mention three projects which were NOT cancelled by this document, but which many publications say were, often I think to try to make out that the DWP had even more of an effect on UK military projects than it perhaps did. When assessing these programmes, it should be borne in mind that Harold McMillan became Prime Minister in January 1957 and he then made Duncan Sandys his Minister of Defence – so all three projects had already gone by the time Sandys began work on this document. -

The Question One of the recurring questions about the fighter aircraft of the Second World War concerns the choice of their armament. Although armament is an essential part of a fighter aircraft, it has not been studied very often. Many studies of WWII combat aircraft seem to ignore it entirely. Other sources make wrong assumptions, and too often it has been ignored that there was considerable change in fighter armament during the war. -

Seeking better performance and fulfilment of the Air Ministry Specification E.38/46, Hawker chief designer Sidney Camm created the Hawker P.1052, which was essentially a Sea Hawk with a 35-degree swept wing. First flying in 1948, the P.1052 demonstrated good performance but did not warrant further development into a production aircraft.
