LIFE MEMBERS (Women) Mesdames R Martin, T McDonald, P Quickenden, P Carrick PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 116th Annual Report of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

The 10/11 season has indeed been a harrowing one.

We in Canterbury have been part of a once in 500 year event—a series of major earthquakes in September , December, February, and then June—with 1000’s of aftershocks in between. These events have affected us all, through tragic loss of life of loved ones, friends, and even a cricket club member. Our thoughts and sympathies have already been expressed to the family of Normand Lee.

All of us have suffered damage to some degree with our homes, businesses, and jobs. Our City will take many years to recover from this.

Our season, as we all know was cut short after the Feb 22nd Earthquake. After that our season was effectively over.

I was very pleased to see a strong turnout for our prize giving, particularly when our lives were still in a state of upheaval.

Our newly appointed committee from our last AGM was starting to get to grips with how our club can function and grow in a new tighter funding era.

Also during the off-season a number of our committee and club members attended strategic planning workshops facilitated by Sport Canterbury. We identified 4 key areas where we as a club need to focus to ensure our club is secure and forward focused. I believe that this exercise was crucial in getting us all on the same page. In terms of the work we need to do to be the “club of Choice” as outlined in our new mission statement. A copy of our 2011-2014 Strategic Plan is available on our website. We are in the process of appointing project leaders to drive those key areas, and I look forward to the positive results which will surely follow, as we implement key action plans.

Our club room’s improvements programme continues to be a long process. The earthquakes have certainly not helped in that regard. The lack of availability of qualified contractors willing to do our job has been incredibly frustrating. By the time this goes to print I am confident we will have contractors engaged and underway with our refurbishment.

The earthquakes have also caused us major damage to our astro turf facilities, and whilst the facility is insured, it is a major job to rip up, excavate and repair, and we will need to plan carefully, how and when we do this.

Our grounds have also suffered major damage. We had major liquefaction, and now there are a lot of undulations on the ground, and the poor drainage would suggest the drainage system is severely damaged. We are in discussions with Council and Canterbury Cricket as to what this might mean for pre-season match venues.

The SPC—Sydenham Sports Complex—which currently includes the Hockey and Cricket Clubs is delighted to announce that Sydenham Bowls will join us officially from Oct 1st. The SPC will now effectively manage the properties of our astro turf, Sydenham Pavilion and Sydenham Bowl’s rooms, and are available for all members to use and enjoy. It is intended that we step up the use of the Bowls rooms for after match functions and of course we have 2 sky TVs available, plus pokies, and pool table, and of course, the bar.

There are a number of personnel changes this upcoming year.

We have lost our long serving coach Mike Shrimpton. Shrimpo and his family lost their business premises twice after both major earthquakes of September and February. Their home was also badly damaged, and at the end of all this, Mike decided he needed to relocate his family to the peaceful environs of Taradale in the Hawke’s Bay. We are really sad to see Mike go, but fully understand what he has been through. Mike wants to continue as our Sydenham ambassador, and I am sure that any players moving south from Mike area—will surely end up in Sydenham!

We were fortunate to be able to appoint Phil Robinson the role of club coach. Many of you will have read from the recent Press release that Phil was a very successful County Cricket player, and more recently a coach at Leicester. Phil had a number of coaching offers from clubs in the Canterbury region, and we were delighted that he chose to join us here at Sydenham.

I am also pleased to announce that Sunjay Ganda has accepted the new role of Senior Manager. This new role will enable us as a club to focus on a strong player recruitment campaign and also continue on with our player development programmes. Sunjay will be relinquishing his player role to focus on the key objectives as well as providing Phil with assistance with team selections and player assessments.

We have also lost our senior scorer, Brent Whear, who has decided to relocate to Dunedin for the foreseeable future. On behalf of the Committee I would like to pass on my thanks to Brent for his diligence and hard work in past seasons and wish him all of the best for the future. We will be actively recruiting a replacement for Brent in the near future.

Our Club Captain Ben Larter has signalled to the committee that he will not be available in this role this season. Ben, and his family, like a lot of us, has been severely affected by the earthquakes, and also his current role, working in the City re-build, means long hour at work. On behalf of the committee I would like to express our sincere thanks to Ben for his past efforts, and hope that he can at least front up on most Saturdays for a relaxing game of cricket!.

Finally I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Committee. We have some serious experience and ability within our current committee and I thank you all for your input into what has been a very very difficult year. I trust I can persuade you all to re-stand, to continue with the work and plans we have started. We have unfinished business!! Thanks also to our ever-serving Bert Walker for his quiz night, (we did have another one planned for 22nd Feb, but another major earthquake took care of that) and Also the very successful golf day.

Also thanks to Jon Bennett who is our raffles organizer at Becks on Friday night—great effort Jon, and the revenue from this weekly raffle is very welcome and needed! Thanks again to Andrew Chisnall for his sterling work organizing the prize giving, and of course the preparation of this annual report.

I would also like to acknowledge our sponsors. Becks Southern Alehouse Air Rescue Trust Pub Charity Canterbury Community Trust New Zealand Community Trust Southern Community Trust

Without their ongoing support we would not be able to function as a successful, viable club.

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Welcome to the end of another season here at the mighty SCC.

Unfortunately this is a season that will be remembered for the terrible events on Feb 22. On Feb 22 Sydenham CC lost one of its members Normand Lee from the Suddenly Sydenham cricket team. The season was also brought to a premature close 6 weeks early as cricket was the last thing on the minds of us all.

Next season will have a very new look for many reasons: After the devastation of Feb 22 many the cities cricket grounds will not be ready in time for the start of the season including our own beloved Sydenham Park. As a result (at the time of writing this) Sydenham Premiers will possibly be based at Lincoln University. Ours isn’t the only club in this position with Lancaster Park and possibly East Shirley in a similar position. Many grounds not normally used will have to utilised to accommodate all of the various grades.

Sydenham CC is likely to have less teams on the park. Last season we had the most of any club in Christchurch with 12. Next season we will possibly have 3 less teams due to the flow on effects of Feb 22, as people have moved away and priorities have changed.

As of 1 Oct the merger of Cricket, Bowls & Hockey under the Sydenham Park Complex banner becomes official. After a hugely successful trial this season, a huge calendar events tied into the Rugby World Cup are in the pipeline.

Due to work commitments I will be not be standing for the club captain role or the committee, and won’t be captaining the new 2020 side. I wish the new club captain & the incoming committee all the best and will still be floating around helping where needed. Oh and I will be representing the mighty SCC Cardinals side this season so look forward to seeing me in a netball skirt at some point! All the best for the upcoming season.

Lots of love & cuddles Ben Larter OBITUARIES

Norman Lee

Norman has been a member of Suddenly Sydenham since its beginning in 1999 when we were all Year 9 and mostly at Cashmere High School. He was an unorthodox batsman who crouched low and often noodled the ball from his pads or slashed hard outside off stump. He was renowned for his unusual one piece pads that were made famous by Chris Martin. Norman only needed 2 runs to reach the significant milestone of 2000 runs for our team. He was given out caught behind for a leaving him on 1998 runs. To make matters worse he didn’t even hit the ball. With the ball Norman ran in fast and hard. He leapt high and curled up tight, then paused, then unleashed. He claimed many through varying lines, lengths and speeds.

Norman was such a loyal and consistent member of our team. He left us twice, once to try his hand at higher level cricket and secondly to be a gym instructor on a cruise ship. Apart from these times you could count on three things from Norman at cricket. 1. He will play on Saturday 2. He will bring some variety of rice crackers for drinks break for the boys 3. And he will do bowling warm up stretches in the field to hint he is ready to bowl

Norman had a unique and hilarious sense of humour. Most games he would tell me he had a great idea on how to break a partnership – he could bowl leg spin, this was not a great idea at all.

Norman was killed in town by the earthquake on February 22nd 2011. There is now a Norman Lee trophy for outstanding commitment to Sydenham Cricket Club.

Rest in Peace.

Zena Hocking was a life member of the club and a member of Technical Old Girls Club before they merged with Sydenham. A mid order batswoman and wicketkeeper she was a Canterbury representative from 1938-39 to 1952-53. She died on 18 January 2011, age 91.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements. FINAL POINTS AND PLACINGS

The 2010/2011 season was unfortunately brought to an early and abrupt end with the devastating earthquake on February 22nd. The results up until that point had not been flattering, but the few weeks prior to this, the Senior side had shown signs of turning the corner.

The side looked very different from the previous years, with 5 or 6 of the senior players retiring to play in the 20/20 competition. This left big holes in the team, but a great opportunity for the young members of the club to come in and get accustomed to Senior cricket. Results were poor throughout the one-day competition, not winning a game, but there were certainly signs the young players that had come into the side would adapt to the challenges of Senior cricket. Individual performances from Dylan Goldstone, Andrew McCracken and Braden Gardner showed that on their day they could mix with the best of them and it was just a case of finding that consistency. The senior players tried to lead by example including Captain Sean Heather, Ben Rapson and Chris Cooper, but really the side needed more performances from these players.

By the time the 2 day competition had come around the side looked like it was starting to gel together and it was not going to be long until we got their first win under their belt. We did this soon after Christmas and also grabbed a very good draw by batting all day to rescue a match after a poor first day. These signs of a maturing team starting to understand how to grind out performances when the going got tough and make the most while on top will set them up for next season. Only 1 or 2 changes are likely and with everyone a year older and a year wiser I am sure that the 2011/2012 will be much more successful.

A special mention must go to Mike Shrimpton who departs Sydenham Cricket Club largely due to the earthquakes in Christchurch. He and his wife Davina have moved back to Hawkes Bay and Mike has already found himself a new role as CD Hinds Coach. He will be missed at Sydenham but we wish him all the best in the future.

Phil Robinson has been appointed as Sydenham Cricket Club coach and he brings new ideas and new approach to the club and we all look forward to working with him. Sunjay Ganda has been made Cricket Manager and he will oversee the top 3 adults teams working closely with the captains and Phil to bring a structure and stability to the playing side of things that is needed.

Firstly I must apologise for being unable to report on the first 3 months of the 2010/11 season on two fronts as one the score book was lost and never found, and I didn’t come on board till late December. However, I can confirm that the season was structured were all One Day 50 over matches were played at the start of the season with one Saturday set a-side for the Twenty 20 competition. The side missed out on the top four, therefore missing out on playing in the semi-finals.

The 2A Twenty 20 Competition is played over three Saturday’s throughout the season, I can report on two of the Saturday’s were we had four very tight matches which could have gone either at games end, fortunately on two occasions we were on the right end of the games. Notable performances Daniel Thompson 44 with the bat verse Marist in very tough conditions, also Karl Belcher smashed a brilliant 47. However, one performance which needs special mention was Matt Wingham who blazed 71 in against St Albans on a very hot 31deg day, Matt opened the batting and from ball one, the hit the ball to all parts of the park.

The 2 Day competition was started in late December and the 2A side was very motivated to perform well in this from of the game, and showed in the few games they got to play that they were a very competitive and had a real chance to make the top four, a goal the team had set its self. The notable performances which need special mention again Daniel Thompson who had a great 2A season scored 114 against East Shirley and also a winning 72 verse Marist / Harewood. Dean Sumner also had a great season reaching 50 on 3 occasions with highest being 61. Chris Cooper scored 56 against Marist / Harewood as well and Karl Belcher reached his highest score of the season with 55. Against Riccarton Nathan Wingham also scored 55 on Hagley Six which was the last day of play for the 2010/11 season. Top performances with the ball which need special mention also, Shenhan Gunaskar 6 wickets for 17 runs, a great spell of bowling ripped the heart out of the opposition top ordered. Jonny Lester now residing in Auckland bowled 19 overs on a very hot Saturday afternoon at Redwood Park where he got 5 wickets for 68 runs.

Thank you. Sunjay Ganda

3A GRADE TEAM REPORT – SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

During the off season we lost most of the Suddenly Sydenham team to other cities. Most notably was Lee Gallagher who had been with the team since 1999. Since there were only 3 players left from last year so there was a merger with Michael Nicholson’s Sydenham Book L team. The season was a fun one and we competed well and won 10 from 17 games. Highlights from the year include; Josh Gardner’s 129* from 107 balls, fifties from Geordie Dann, Marty Crook and Matt Coxon. Daniel Loughton claimed 23 wickets at 11.9 and with a RPO of 3.1. We fielded well at times and were always keen and enthusiastic. This was exemplified by Benny Magon’s four run outs in four consecutive games. Our leading run scorer, Josh Gardner left us for Auckland but a Suddenly Sydenham stalwart Norman Lee returned from overseas to replace him. Norman was killed during the February 22nd earthquake two runs short of 2000 runs for us. He was one of our best for the last ten years and we be sorely missed.

We only had 3 wins but a lot of close games. Our big problem was trying to get 11 players turn up each sat. Our two new recruits Gareth n Blair turned out to be very useful cricketers. Gareth is a devastating left-hand batsman who is also a useful right-hand leggy (with some help from Kevin McGowan).Blair who joined us after xmas is a good quick bowler n an accomplished batsman. Mayank scored 3 fifties before xmas. Aiden has turned into a top fast bowler. Voni is a talented batsman. Salim is a useful opening batsman. Zack kept well n is a good pinch-hitter. Jordan is finally having a shoulder op which is good for him as he's talented as well. George was one of the most economical bowlers in the grade. We should have senior trials as I reckon I could pick a team from us, Syd Suddenly (Josh n Jordie etc) n others from 2A n 2B who combined would possibly beat our very weak senior team.

3B GRADE TEAM REPORT – SYDENHAM GOATS

The Goats started the season sporting a new look team with a number of players from last year unavailable for various reasons including the three first choice bowlers. We invested in youth recruiting Jacob and Sam who were both still at school and recalled Lionel to balance the age back towards the Goats average and we were up ready to go for the new season. A mixed start saw us sitting mid table for the first section of the season not helped by a constantly changing team due to injuries and unavailability’s as well as some mixed displays. Then from December onwards we went on an unbeaten run until the last game before the February 22nd earthquake that had us poised to challenge for the title with 6 games left. Two wins off first, with the two teams above us to play and the bottom 4 teams to round out the season we felt we had a great chance at the title. Unfortunately the charge faltered in the last game with our worst performance of the year and we finished third when the season ended early.

Our bowling was lead by Mark Logan who was great all season getting wickets early and coming back to shut things down at the end with his quick inswingers. He finished with a 5 hall in the last game to collect the most wickets for the club. Sam Garriock was a mixed bag, bowling some fantastic spells at good pace one week but having some very short spells at other times. Jon Bennett changed from 20 years of opening the batting to 5th bowler this year due to the bowling shortage and picked up consistent wickets bowling straight as batsmen’s eyes lit up seeing the gentle pace.

The batting was led by Kyle Hunter who was impossible to get out when we batted second before Christmas and scored consistently against all attacks. Andy Chisnall and Tony Dannenberg gave us a solid top three along with Kyle and often at least 2 of these 3 would score a good portion of the required runs. The return of Heath Sanders part way thru the season gave us another consistent performer who could take the attack to the opposition and score quickly.

Our ground fielding was not our strength, especially after Clarke Reilly left for Australia and sometimes our catching wasn’t that great either. Although we did take some outstanding catches we also dropped some sitters and two games were lost in this way. Overall another enjoyable year with a great team spirit as is the norm for the Goats. Special thanks to all the players who helped us out when we were short, which seemed to be all too often sometimes. Good luck to Bede and Clarke for their overseas adventures.

Firstly, I must acknowledge the commitment of our senior players who have been in the team since the beginning; John Hawes, Marc Hobson, Cameron Hatcher, Joe Potter- Butler, Jamie Lewis and Michael Taylor. These players have held the team together over the past 6 seasons I have played in the team, but the majority of the team have been playing together for the past 14 years. Hopefully this trend will continue and we will play together for many more seasons.

The 2010/11 season was a mixed bag for us due to some inconsistent play and lack of commitment from a few players. However, when we fielded our top side we were one of the most competitive teams in the 3B grade.

The batting was led by Elliott Hitchings who once again showed that he is an outstanding batsman and can lead from the front. He also assisted the team in correcting batting stances and movement of feet during batting practise. Elliott made 4 fifties in the season and averaged 60.83 for the season. As captain, I batted with Elliott and he made you want to lift your game and in doing so he stole a 50 away from me hitting 20 runs in two over’s, and a 6 to get his own 50. I was unfortunately stranded on 43 . Karl Broadhurst was not consistent with his form as he has been in previous seasons but once again he shone with a nice century in the season with some classy shots.

If there is an award for unluckiest bowler, the winner would be John Hawes. On countless times John beat the outside edge and had the ball go over the stumps. He only captured 15 wickets in the season, but this did not show the consistency of his bowling and how much trouble his pace caused opposition teams. Karl Broadhurst and Abraham Atherton were our leading wicket takers with 24 and 27 respectively. The season started sallow for the bowlers and as they warmed up and began to trouble the batters, we were struck by the earthquake. An area that improved for the 3B Allstars this season was our catches stuck. Leading from the front in fielding was Abraham Atherton and Marc Hobson.

Well done to an inconsistent season, but as a talented side we will be back in 2011-12 as a competitive team from start to finish.

By the time of the first game the Cardinals had a very solid squad with 16 fully paid up members. The mix was good with some fresh new faces as well as the regulars. We also welcomed the return of Cardinal original Nathan Kreft to lead the bowling attack. A bright future was ahead for the Cardinals, well at least off the field.

The first game of the season saw the Cardinals taking on the Addington Boguns. We turned up to Barrington Park, fresh and ready to go. We had new caps, new shirts, new blazers, new BBQ and a freshly painted white picket fence. The beers were on ice for what we hoped would be the first Cardinals victory of the new season. This was not to be with the Cardinals being dismissed on a rather green pitch for 28 and Addington easily getting the runs. So on the first day of the season we were into the BBQ and chilly bin by 2pm. This would be the first of many early finishes for the Cardinals, but we were not to complain.

The first half of the season was a winless one but we were always in the hunt. Many games we just did not score enough runs as we usually had the opposition 8 or 9 down by the time they passed our target. But the Cardinals spirits we always high and the off the field events certainly kept everyone interested.

The first victory came on January 28 against the young kids from LPW. Unlike many of the Cardinals games this went right down to the wire finishing close to 7pm. A good total was posted with a number of the lads in the runs. But it was the bowling display that really secured the victory. Lead by Sam Perry and finished off by Nick Smithson. I would like to say the celebrations went off with a bang but everyone was so stuffed they were slightly subdued. This was the start of a winning streak which was only cut short by the bloody Earthquake of February.

A new event on the calendar for the Cardinals was the clubs T20 Championship. A disappointing response from other club teams saw the Cardinals take on Suddenly Sydenham from a couple of grades above in the final. This was the Cardinals first 20/20 game but we had plenty of experience of playing shorter forms of the game on Saturday as we usually only last 20 out of our 40 overs. Playing on SCG 1 the Cardinals decided to bowl first. Sam Perry and Nathan Kreft lead the way with the new ball putting on some early pressure. Chris Small and Ben Larter showed there experience in the death stages and we restricted Suddenly Sydenham to 160ish. With the bat big hitters Evan Thorne and Sam Perry put the balls to all parts of the SCG and to the amazement of the Cardinals and supporters a victory was achieved. We look forward to defending our title next season and we encourage all other afternoon teams to get in behind this!!!

This season the Cardinals were lucky enough to secure Macs Brew Bar and Brumbies Edgeware Road as major sponsors. The Cardinals appreciate their support and we hope they can reopen in time for the 2011-12 season.

The WAGs club was something new for the Cardinals this season. Andrew “Hagis/Braveheart” Milne was put in charge of the girls. This was a great success as often there were more supporters than players at most Saturdays. The Cardinals appreciate the support and are looking forward to another season of fun filled sideline events.

When the club moved to the bowls club the Cardinals held some reservations. These were quickly dispelled. The hospitality shown by Whitebait, Margert and the rest of the bowls community was outstanding and the Cardinals cannot thank them enough.

Once again the club has been more than welcoming to the Cardinals and the different style of cricket we play. Ben Larter has done an outstanding job as club captain and will be a big loss to the club. But, we at the Cardinals are lucky enough to have secured his signature for the 2011-12 season and we look forward to seeing Ben in the netball skirt some more.

This season the cardinals formed an executive for the first time. This enabled the Cardinals to really push for what they wanted out of the season. It was lead by CEO Tom Pritchard, with Jolie Pritchard, Manny Roberts, Bonnie Johnston, Brett Carpenter and Nick Smithson ably assisting. The Cardinals and I thank you for all your hard efforts and it has enabled the Cardinals to have a secure future in 3C cricket.

Lastly I would like to say a massive thanks to all the Cardinals, whether you have played one game or the whole season and also to our supporters. It has been a privilege to yet again be involved with such a great bunch of people.

We look forward to a full season of 3C cricket in 2011/12.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT - CARDINALS

The earthquake shortened 2010/11 season was another successful one for the Sydenham Cardinals finishing 3rd in the grade and winning 10 of 14 games which was only one win away from being first equal. Like the previous year we should be pleased with this result given we were probably the oldest team in the grade with an average age in excess of 50 when the other top teams seemed to be nearer 40 – and getting younger each year!

The major strength of the team has for many years been our bowling and it was good to see this season a number of batsmen stepping up and making sound contributions on a regular basis.

Andy Thin was our ‘Batsman of the Year’ scoring 432 runs at an average of 39 and he consistently gave the start of the innings a solid and platform.

Tim Murdoch only played half the games because of his NZC commitments but still achieved 259 runs at an average of 75. Geoff Miller got our only 100 of the season and that innings resulted in Geoff receiving the award for the ‘Most Valuable Individual Effort’ of the season. You could always rely on him steadying the innings if required or alternatively smashing quick runs when needed.

Several batsmen had limited opportunities because the top 3 dominated the scoring in many games where we won with only 1 or 2 wickets down. Players in this category who have the ability to score runs if given more chances include Geoff Thin, Kev Congdon, Mark Paget and Ewen Spence.

For the second season in a row Dave Fleming was voted our ‘Bowler of the Season’ and his leggies/top spinners gained 21 wickets at a very respectable 3.8 runs per over. Like the previous season very few batsmen in the grade were able to ‘read’ Flem and he was a real weapon to us whether he opened or came on 4th change.

Dave could also be relied on with the bat in the middle order and he was clearly the team’s ‘Player of the Season’.

Bert Walker, Julian Van Dyk and Stu Simpson continue to bowl as well as ever – albeit a lot slower and for a captain it is great to have such good bowlers to call upon who know the game so well.

We were fortunate to gain a new young recruit at the start of the season in Paul Thomson and he and Jason Miller were probably the quickest bowlers in the grade. It wasn’t often when we had them both playing but when we did they formed a lethal opening attack. Bill Nicholson was only able to play 6 games for us but in each game he made valuable contributions with bat and ball – it will be good to see more of Bill next season.

Kev Moore had work and family commitments prior to Christmas so he too made limited appearances but cream always comes to the top and in his limited roles he showed his class.

I have thoroughly enjoyed captaining the team as we have a great bunch of guys who play the game competitively but in the right spirit. We all look forward to next season with high expectations.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT - HOSPITAL

Sadly the Summer of 2010/11 will be remembered chiefly for non cricketing reasons. We are aware that a club member died in the February 22nd earthquake and that a number of club members suffered bereavement. Our sincere condolences to those affected. The Hospital team had an enjoyable season albeit plagued with the usual problems of finding full numbers each week. This was compounded by the non availability of a couple of key players through exam commitments and a number of injuries to players, a couple of them reasonably serious. Of particular note was the one to Garry Jones who ruptured his Achilles tendon in his first game for us. He had made a stylish 35 opening the batting before injuring himself responding to a call for a quick single from Bernard (the rest of us usually just get run out!). We hope Garry will give it another crack this season as the little we saw of him promised much. In a few games just before the earthquake Ben Jessep, Nick Romans, Manon Patel and Mark Sinclair showed glimpses of form which suggest they will usefully add to the squad in numbers and ability in the coming year.

The batting needs to be strengthened so that we can set sides competitive targets. It was a pity to lose Rajeev Rajagopal who was in fine form until he left in November. He scored 298 runs in six innings at an average of 59.6 including a magnificent 120 not out against Hornby. His bowling and fielding will also be missed. Bernard Fanning batted well as usual but he was cut off by a couple of ‘interesting’ lbw decisions which certainly didn’t help our cause. Other fifty makers were Mike Fisher, Jonathan Smart, Jeff Field, Blair York, James Bishop and James de Costobadie. The latter continues to improve with the bat and is useful late in the inning with his ability to rotate the strike. All of them made other useful contributions with the bat but consistent availability was often a problem. Other useful batting efforts came from Tristan Pettit, Dave Jardine, Charitha Fernando, Prasanna and Jonny Sharr.

There were a number of useful performances in the bowling department. Chris Warren spearheaded the attack well. His economy rate was 2.6 runs per over and he would have taken more than his 8 wickets had not opposing batsmen adopted the policy of keeping him out and attacking other bowlers. Ranjit Menon had an injury plagued season but was very impressive when available. In four games he took 10 wickets at 10.3 and proved to be a wicket taking bowler who was an excellent foil to Chris Warren. Tristan Pettit was absent because of exam and paternity commitments for much of the season but did have one match winning spell of 4 for 14 of 8 overs which made us realise how sorely he was missed. Jonathan Smart (9 wickets) again bowled very well and Mike Fisher and Costa made a good fist of bowling the difficult middle overs as well as taking key wickets. Other useful performances came from Frank Walsh, Danus Ravindran, Bernard Fanning and Patel. It was a pleasure welcoming Bert Walker into the team and, but for the earthquake and my dropping a lollypop at Elmwood Park, we would have bowled him back into form. When he was available James Bishop impressed as a highly able wicket-keeper. Matt Mackey also kept well with Prasanna and Charitha Fernando also deputising at times. The fielding was generally tidy and some excellent catches were taken. Jonny Smart’s effort against Sumner was exceptional, the batsman pausing for some moments in sheer disbelief. Nick Romans effort to dismiss Wisneski first ball wasn’t far behind. As usual Chris Warren was the star fieldsman and he manages to achieve this while recharging his batteries after bowling. I am hopeful that with a couple of new signings and key players back from injury and exam commitments that we will be a more competitive unit in the coming season. I will also be away for some parts of the coming season so would appreciate some assistance with organisational duties.

Dick Sainsbury CAVALIERS 20/20 – SYDENHAM RANGERS

A new grade was formed this season to play 20/20 cricket only.

In the lead up to the start of the season we had 16 ex Sydenham CC Premier & 2nd grade players that had been previously lost to our playing ranks.20/20 with its shorter playing time from 2pm-5pm was an attractive concept for guys with families and work commitments that no longer allowed them to commit to a full days cricket.

Unfortunately despite our objections the CCA “customised” the grade making it 9 players and introduced other new rules that unfortunately reduced the competitive nature of the game. As a result we had a large drop off in numbers throughout the season and ended up using 32 players over the course of the shortened season. At one point we played a game with 6 players with one player having never played before and chased down 136 with 6 over’s to spare! Towards the end of the season we had a more settled look and were able to field a full team each game with everyone in the team contributing.

Overall we had a very successful season with a number of huge scores with 3 games against St Albans racking up 240+. We tussled with the Riccarton Hogs side for top position and when the season was cut short they were 1 win ahead of us and were deserved winners of the competition.

Unfortunately at the time of writing this it is unlikely that the Sydenham Rangers will be playing in this grade for the upcoming season.

The 2010-11 season was a much abbreviated one with the girls playing only 8 matches due to byes, defaults, weather & of course the earthquake which halted everything.

Despite these events, much progress was made with some excellent performances shown by our players. We continued our association with LPW women’s section & I am happy to report that this continues to be successful with several of our players having the opportunity to play for the combined LPW/SYD Premier team. Those who were called on to fill positions here all acquitted themselves with distinction & were as usual, given every opportunity to do so. That they were all made to feel welcome goes without saying. I also have a major input in this area, liaising on at least a weekly basis with the premier captain & the other selector.

We again had many players selected for representative teams at age group level & the girls who did so performed very well. They are a credit to themselves & the club. The combined LPW/SYD women’s section were represented in the Premier grade, 1st division, 2nd division (two teams) & 3rd division. Each team has had a dedicated coach & the support of the coaching staff at both clubs. It is highly likely that we will have at least the same number of players again for 2011-12 but with two teams in the 1st division, as there are several girls who would make the transition to that grade easily.

Much has been said about the lack of girls/women players in Canterbury yet that doesn’t appear to be the case with us. Our junior section registered 70 girls to play cricket in the past season, several joining us from other clubs. It would appear that our numbers of talented young players are on the increase & I am told by several of the newcomers that they are with us because of the better coaching, atmosphere & opportunities that they would not otherwise have got. We can look forward to a very bright future with our girls/women cricketers. It is my belief that we are headed down the right path with what we are doing at this time with our continued combined association.

JUNIOR SECTION - CONVENORS REPORT

Sadly our cricket season was shortened this year, due to the significant earthquakes that the region had suffered. Our hearts go out to the many communities of Christchurch that have suffered and continue to suffer with the continual aftershocks. Due to the shortened season, no final placings of our Sydenham teams can reported on, but I can say, that many of our teams, achieved significant places within all grades/sections, and our club is very proud of all of our players. Congratulations too many players from Sydenham that managed, even in duress, to make Canterbury Developing and Emerging teams, well done to you all. We thank all the coaches, managers, parents/caregivers who gave support this season and appreciated the duress that many were put under during the season. Thank you to all the committee and coaching staff who gave their time during the season, without this continual support, our club could not function. Also for the continued support of our sponsors.

Our Milo programme was again successful and thanks you to Andrew McCracken and his team of helpers, for the coaching and the success of this programme. We are very proud to offer the Milo programme and know how much it benefits our younger community. The introduction of the South West Youth Cricket has been successful and many teams have joined. This creates a stepping stone for Sydenham Junior Club to Youth and then onto our Senior Club. Our thanks to Lynne Reader and Richard McCracken for the role they play, in the administration and support of the South West Youth Cricket.

Our Junior Club and Senior Club are becoming more affiliated with one another, and it is our endeavour this year, to have senior committee members on our committee and for our committee members to continue to support the senior committee. Due to the relationship between both clubs becoming more affiliated, we are now using the Sydenham Bowling Club for all functions and events; the Sydenham Cricket Club and grounds were severely damaged in the earthquakes and is currently not available. We thank the Senior Club for their support and providing us with joint club room facilities.

Winter training run by CJCA for players Year 6 to Year 8, continues to be successful and is very much supported by our Sydenham players, with many attending specialist sessions and umpiring courses. With the introduction of Pitch Vision, this has made winter training a very attractive option for many.

CJCA have appointed a Junior Recruitment Officer (Andrew Ellis from the Wizards and Rachel Candy from the Magicians) to provide support to all earthquake effected cricket clubs. Sydenham Junior Cricket Club has been identified as being effected, due to the loss of our Sydenham Cricket Ground. I will be working closely with Andrew and Rachel, to help with their roles and also provide the liaison point for our local schools, to ensure that we as a club benefit from this appointment.

CJCA have informed our club that at this stage, there will be no shortage of grounds for Junior Cricket, although Year 8 maybe faced with playing afternoon cricket. This will be confirmed by CJCA within the next couple of weeks. Also due to the loss of Sydenham Park, our Kiwi Grade will be relocated to another venue, again to be advised. Our club continues to be well supported by players from all age groups and I look forward to continuing in the role of Convenor to assist the committee, for the continual growth and development of cricket within our community. With my recent appointment of Secretary/Treasurer for CJCA, I feel that this will benefit our club, by providing the committee of up to date developments of junior cricket in the Christchurch region, and will keep us in the forefront of junior cricket in Christchurch. Last year’s report noted that the Trust had $119998 invested with South Canterbury Finance of which $11024.18 was not covered by the Government Guarantee. The trust received all the investment plus Interest which was very satisfactory. Sponsorship via the Gaming Machines proved to be very difficult.

We acknowledge the support of the following Air Rescue 28277 SouthernTrust 5000 Pub Charity 5000 Lion Foundation 4000 NZ Community Trust 5000

The Trust has advanced by way of Loans to the Cricket & Hockey Clubs which was a requirement of the Donation from The Canterbury Community Trust to The Complex. The interest however was received by the Trust and was used to pay for the Air Fares for Sean Heather.

We acknowledge the ongoing support of Graham & Linda Harris.

The Earthquake caused the cancellation of the last month of Cricket. This had an Effect on the Financial Performance of The Trust. This was offset by the Trust Receiving $3300 from the Earthquake Commission which was used to pay Mike Shrimpton for Coaching & Grounds & Brent Whear for scoring.

The Earthquake also caused the closure of St Martins New World. We understand that Russell McKenzie is going to rebuild and hopefully will continue his sponsorship of the club.

The ongoing support of Andy Inness at Cricket Express is acknowledged.

The club has taken over the Gaming Machine Applications for the 2012 year. This Will have an effect on next year’s trust activities with the only income being Interest, Advertising & the Golf Tournament.

Mike Pearcy has moved permanently to live in Perth and we wish him all the best and thank him for his considerable contributions over the past years.

The earthquake caused the raffle to be cancelled.

In conclusion our thanks to the Trust Members David Heard, Mike Pearcy, Richie Thomas, Bill Thomson and Bert Walker.

The Trust will be reviewing its ongoing role.
