Mahadeva Rao 2 and Nordin Simbak 2 1Department of Biochemistry, Prof. Dhanapalan College of Arts and Science, Chennai, India 2Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Preceding work in our laboratory has revealed that scopoletin, one of the main bioactive coumarin from fruits of Morinda citrifolia, exerts anti-diabetic activity in in vitro partly by averting α glucosidase and α amylase action. However, its aorto/vaso protective impact-based research is still incomprehensible. The present study looks into the regulatory efficacy of scopoletin on aortic lipid profile, radical scavenging status, endothelial factors and aortic morphology in dyslipidemic rats. Rats fed with normal diet serve as control [Group (G) 1], rats fed with cholesterol- enriched diet (CED) (4 % cholesterol and 1 % cholic acid) for 45 days (G2), rats fed with CED for 45 days + scopoletin (10 mg/kg, body weight/day orally) for the last 30 days (G3) and scopoletin alone rats (G4). Blood and aortic tissue were taken immediately and used for various biochemical, histological and molecular analyses. A pronounced increase in the levels of aortic lipid profile, lipid peroxidation along with substantial suppression in the activities of aortic antioxidant and endothelial factor was observed in G2.

  • From Tone to Accent
This page intentionally left blank Matthew Chen’s landmark study offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of the rich and complex patterns of tone used in Chinese languages. Chinese has a wide repertoire of tones which undergo often surprising changes when they are connected in speech flow. The term tone sandhi refers to this tonal alternation. Chen examines tone sandhi phenomena in detail across a variety of Chinese dialects. He explores a range of important theoretical issues such as the nature of tonal representation, the relation of tone to accent, the prosodic domain of sandhi rules, and the interface between syntax and phonology. His book is the culmination of a ten-year research project and offers a wealth of empirical data not previously accessible to linguists. Extensive references and a bibliography on tone sandhi complete this invaluable resource which will be welcomed as a standard reference on Chinese tone. Having taught for many years at the University of California, San Diego, is Professor and chair of Linguistics and Dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty at the City University of Hong Kong. He has written numerous articles on linguistics and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Chinese Linguistics, University of California, Berkeley. • The African Telatelist
The African Telatelist Newsletter 206 of the African Telately Association – August 2015. ___________________________________________________________________________ Frogs & Toads - (C.Edwards & W.Stobrawe) The differences between frogs and toads are very few and are not always clear. Frogs are generally described as small, smooth-skinned, hairless, cold-blooded, carnivorous amphibian creatures of the order SALIENTIA, especially the web-footed aquatic species of the genus RANA and allied genera. Above: (Frog phonecards cards from Holland, Switzerland, Poland,Spain, Turkey and Sweden.) Toads are mostly all of the above, but are terrestrial creatures, of the genus BUFO and related genera. Toads usually have broader, flatter bodies than frogs. They can also be covered in warts, whereas frogs have smooth skins. -3- They are found in every continent except Antarctica and in the harshest of deserts. Generally speaking frogs and toads lay their eggs in or near water. These hatch to become tadpoles which feed on small aquatic life forms, insects and their lava. Within a season they lose their tails, grow legs and emerge from the water as tiny adults. Adults range in size from 1,3cm to 30cm. The largest being the Goliath from West Africa. They live on insects and spiders which they catch with their long sticky tongues. They have long hind legs which assist with swimming and jumping and have the ability to breathe through both their lungs and their skin. As a protection against predators, many secrete a noxious substance through their skin. Most of these substances just leave a bad taste in the mouth of the predator, but some are poisonous and have been used as dart and arrow poisons by people in the tropics.

  • WONG CHEE MENG [F]Ortune of Lives
WONG CHEE MENG [F]ortune of Lives Wei-LingGallery 1 [F]ortune of Lives WONG CHEE MENG 2 3 I became fascinated with Chinese values and practices ever since I started researching into it over the past six months. I learn a lot from sightings and I am very much attracted to visuals containing shapes, forms, colours, textures et cetera. Beautiful visuals are discovered through sight, normally through observation. Various elements in forms of patterns and motifs can be found in this series of my artworks, mostly a result of my looking, seeing and observing. “Form” generally refers to the shape and structure of art. The innovation of form in this series is creation from creativity, meaning to look into the basic characteristics of traditional auspicious patterns, then recreating its core form with elements, and restructuring new form with the use of abstraction, interception, variation, rearranging compositions and recombination with some other method. Every new form that exists is comprised of a combination of various elements. Some look weird, some look illogical and some look hilarious. Those elements are derived from questioning being a Chinese and seeing the world through the eyes of a Chinese. Besides feelings of translation (what I feel when I look at these elements), boundless experiences through contact with auspicious elements I happened to come across at Chinese coffee shops have become my inspiration. Thereby it becomes an elevation from everyday life into art, as it reflects, reforms my mental image, and is then made visible on canvases. Moreover, I have also done in-depth research on huge values of our traditional elements, and also adding new thoughts into traditional elements resulting in more brilliant surprises and combinations.
