Nov 12, 2012 06:00 PM Diane Kohler presented Stacey Poole with the August member of the o Bell Ringing for our month award for her involvement with the membership committee over the Salvation Army past 3+ years. Partners Union Square Dec 07, 2012 10:00 AM The speaker of the day was Keith Axtell. Keith, a fellow Rotarian, is currently the chair of the District Grants Committee. Keith described his work with six micro credit projects that our District has been involved with in Ecuador, o Membership Committee Meeting Guatemala and Colombia. The program started in 2005 at the urging of his First Republic Bank, wife Holly, who wanted to help women in Latin America. They met with 11th floor Rotary clubs in that area to see how they could help, and decided that the Dec 10, 2012 06:00 PM micro credit program would be successful. The Microcredit program works, because a micro credit “group” is formed. It o ROTARY HOLIDAY LUNCHEON City Club is a group of 5-30 low income borrowers (primarily women) who are loaned Dec 18, 2012 11:30 AM $50-$300 to start their small self-help business. They make weekly payments back to the group at a 25-35% interest rate. The interest is low for the area and covers the administration costs for running the group. The group o guarantees each other’s loans so there is peer pressure to timely pay back your commitment and be successful. The first group was loaned $2,500, and not only paid it back, but saved $1,000 amongst themselves. Considering that most of these business owners feed and house their families on less than $1 per day, this is a very successful program. The goal of the program is self-sufficiency and the micro credit program can provide some training to help them sustain their businesses. The types of businesses include a toy store, a beauty shop, a restaurant, and a vegetable stand. One woman purchased a fishing boat, put her husband to work on the boat, and then sold the fish in her community. Rotarians have found that this program is most successful with women, because the men tend to spend their profits. The women promote education for their children and better manage the money. This program provides these women with pride, self-confidence and financial security, which also improves their local community. This is a true example of helping people help themselves, and allowing them to become self-sufficient. The Rotary Club of San Francisco has co-sponsored four of these projects, and 33 Rotary Clubs within our District have participated in micro-credit projects. There is a new project in Colombia underway. In total, this program has started 1,600 new businesses, loaned $387,000 in funds, and the last project had a 100% payback rate. After Keith spoke, he drew the winning raffle ticket. Wai-Ling Eng won the raffle prize that was generously donated by Kevin Leong. • December 2012 President’S Message Dear MSC Members; Ski Season Is Now Upon Us
December Volume 110 December 2012 President’s Message Dear MSC Members; Ski Season is now upon us. I had a wonderful weekend at the Lodge Thanksgiving weekend. I took the opportunity of the early snow and went skiing with my two older granddaughters at North Star. They skied until it closed. It was a lot of fun even though we only skied on the green runs for the day. Talking about the Lodge I want to remind everyone to do their part when they are there; not only clean up after yourself, but pick a maintenance chore from the clip board and do it. If everyone does this, we will have a COM . sparkling clean Lodge for the entire winter season; so do not forget to make your reservations as soon as possible! Race season starts in January and the sooner you put your name on the list the better your chances are of getting to stay at the Lodge, not only on off race weekends, but also when there is availability on race weekends. Guests can be booked or added to your reservations on Non-race weekends up to 60 days before the stay and 30 days before the stay for Holiday Weekends. MODESTOSKICLUB . Renewal time is coming to end. We have several of you “lagging” on WWW getting those Liability Forms signed and turned in with your Dues/Renewal Fees. Remember; until your have turned in both of these, you will not be able to stay at the Lodge as a member or reserve a key. Next Wednesday is our Christmas Dinner Meeting at the Fruit Yard.

  • Executive Director's Report 2014
Executive Director’s Report 2014 Annual Meeting of Player Representatives While the 2013-14 season was not without its share of challenges for the Association, I can look back and unequivocally state that it was a “results-driven” year. The Winter Olympics provided opportunity for a significant number of former PHPA Members, as well as an opportunity for nine (9) players from our current membership base. With a number of AHL affiliates (7) playing games in the facility of their NHL Parent Club, it provided an opportunity for NHL fans to watch the next generation of NHL players, while providing our Members with an unforgettable experience. For the first time in my 33 years with the Association, I was sued, by the former Owners of the Central Hockey League (CHL). In doing my job protecting players’ rights in the CHL, and with very important health issues involving a player’s wife and player’s child, the former Owners felt that Allen and Rapid City were looking to leave the CHL for the ECHL due to my efforts in protecting the Membership. While the lawsuit is still pending between the CHL’s former Owners and the ECHL, the case against me was dismissed. During the off season, the CHL was purchased by current CHL Owners, with Wichita’s Ownership owning both Wichita and Tulsa, while the Missouri Mavericks assumed ownership of the recently folded St. Charles Chill franchise. The Wichita Ownership group recently added yet another franchise, with their purchase of the Allen Americans. This situation will be reviewed as it could present some issues in the CHL for PHPA Members going forward.

With the relocation of the Abbotsford Heat (now Adirondack Flames) and the Adirondack Phantoms (now Lehigh Valley Phantoms), the AHL realigned the league. The Flames will be play in the North Division and the Phantoms will be playing in the East Division. The Syracuse Crunch moved from the East Division to the Northeast Division. Lake Erie moved from the North Division to the Midwest Division and the Iowa Wild moved from the Midwest to the West Division. Additionally, the NHL and AHL have discussed moving teams west in order to accommodate the NHL's western franchises.
